The Big Five has been used as a theoretical framework for the evaluation of the 21stcentury skills and is associated with desirable outcomes. This study evaluates the extent to which the Big Five relates to students’ adaptation to the academic environment. Participants were 845 undergraduate students (60.7% female), aged from 17 to 31 years who answered the Factorial Personality Battery and the Academic Experience Questionnaire. Data reduction analysis at the facet level recovered the Big Five structure and indicated that Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Conscientiousness are, respectively, associated with higher personal, interpersonal, and study related academic adaptation dimensions. Agreeableness and Openness did not cluster with academic dimensions, suggesting lower relevance for academic adaptation in higher education.***A Relevância do Modelo dos Cinco Grandes Para a Adaptação dos Estudantes ao Ambiente Acadêmico***O Big Five tem sido usado como referencial teórico para a avaliação das habilidades do século 21 e está associado a resultados desejáveis. Este estudo avalia o quanto os Cinco Grandes Fatores se relacionam com a adaptação dos alunos ao ambiente acadêmico. Participaram 845 estudantes de graduação (60,7% do sexo feminino), com idades entre 17 e 31 anos, que responderam a Bateria de Personalidade Fatorial e o Questionário de Experiência Acadêmica. A análise de redução de dados no nível de faceta recuperou a estrutura dos cinco grandes fatores e indicou que Extroversão, Neuroticismo e Conscienciosidade estão, respectivamente, associados a dimensões de adaptação acadêmica pessoais, interpessoais e relacionadas ao estudo. A Amabilidade e a Abertura não se agruparam com as dimensões acadêmicas, sugerindo menor relevância para a adaptação acadêmica no ensino superior.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that affect higher education student satisfaction and future employment and their use of career and other support services while attending an institution.  The descriptive results of this study suggest that while student satisfaction may be relatively similar for all academic programs, students utilize career and other support services very little.  Most notably, the results also indicate students’ expectations for employment was not related to their experience issuing these services. On the contrary, they were mostly satisfied with their academic and personal development. In essence, students felt prepared for the workplace based on their academic experiences rather than through other supports offered by the institution. This paper suggests that institutions efforts are best placed on the academic and learning experience available to their students versus career and support services.

Abstract There is a high incidence of academic failure in university students which manifests in different ways, such as: low ratings, delayed subjects, course changes and dropouts. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 262 students, which we evaluated the academic experience of the student of Psychology. The Reduced-Academic Experiences Questionnaire was applied. For each year studied we perceived statistical differences, taking into account the period the student studies: 1st year study and institution item (p = 0.039 and 0.000); 2nd year interpersonal and institutional item (p = 0.014 and 0.005). We found statistical differences between morning and night period in 4th-year-students in relation to personal and interpersonal items (p = 0.056 and 0.038). In relation to students from previous years compared to 5th-year-students, the significant statistical results were: 1st and 5th in personal (p = 0.004), study (p = 0.001) and institutional items (p = 0.001), 2nd and 5th in interpersonal (p = 0.050) and institutional items (p = 0.023), 3rd and 5th year in personal item (p = 0.000). We concluded the areas identified above present some domains which certainly best describe the academic adaptation, thus serving as goals for future investigations, in order to intervene and avoid problems in the adaptation of the entrant student at university.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the applicability of Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) in a Malaysian university context. Design/methodology/approach – The CEQ was translated into Malay language using rigorous cross-cultural adaptation procedures. The Malay version CEQ was administered to 190 undergraduate students in one Malaysian public university. Statistical analyses were used to examine the reliability and factor structures of the Malay version CEQ scales using IBM SPSS version 20.0. Findings – Findings raised serious questions about the reliability and construct validity of the CEQ for a Malaysian university sample. Findings revealed that only two out of five scales of CEQ showed satisfactory level of reliability. Six items failed to load on the intended scales. Research limitations/implications – The sample size is small with 190 university students and covered respondents from one local university, while the other 17 local universities were not included due to geographical distance. Practical implications – The findings are particularly important for higher education policymakers to optimise and allocate the resources to improve university quality teaching. More attention should be paid toward how to furnish the university teaching staff to provide a high level of teaching quality that contributes to students’ generic skills for their employment in future. Researchers could extend the applicability of the Malay version CEQ in primary and secondary school context. Originality/value – The vast majority of CEQ-related research has been undertaken in the Western context, thus raising the question of the applicability of CEQ for a Malaysian university context. The fall in the Times Higher Education and QS World University rankings as well as the limited research in assessment-related higher education has also accelerated the needs to examine the applicability of CEQ23 in Malaysian university context. This study has provided fundamental cross-validation empirical evidence to propose improvement in future studies.

The current study tries to understand the diverse nature of relationship between personality Big Five Model (PBFM) and student's perception of abusive supervision in higher education institutions of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa Pakistan. Data was collected in dyads i.e. (supervisors were asked to rate their personality attributes while student were asked to rate the supervisor behavior) through adopted construct. For this purpose, data was collected from three government state universities and one Private Sector University. The focus was on MS/M.Phill and PhD student and their supervisors of the mentioned universities. After measuring normality and validity regression analysis was conducted to assess the impact of supervisor personality characteristics that leads to abusive supervision. Findings indicate interestingly that except agreeableness other four attributes of (PBFM) are play their role for abusive supervision. The results are novel in the nature as for the first time Neuroticism, openness to experience, extraversion and conscientiousness are held responsible for the abusive supervision. The study did not explore the demographic characteristics, and moderating role of organizational culture, justice and interpersonal deviances to understand the strength of relationship in more detail way. This chapter investigates how platformization is affecting the idea of education as a common good on both sides of the Atlantic. The growth of online educational platforms has been explosive, in both primary and higher education. Most of these educational platforms are corporately owned, propelled by algorithmic architectures and business models. They have quickly gained millions of users and are altering learning processes and teaching practices; they boost the distribution of online course material, hence impacting curriculums; they influence the administration of schools and universities; and, as some argue, they change the governance of (public) education as a whole. The chapter explores how, powered by the Big Five, these educational platforms are pushing a new concept of learning that questions values that are fundamental to publicly funded education: Bildung, a knowledge-based curriculum, autonomy for teachers, collective affordability, and education as a vehicle for socioeconomic equality.
