Abstract. The search for new solutions in the field of energy, preventing negative impact on the environment, is one of the priority tasks for modern society. Natural gas occupies a stable position in the demand of the UES of Russia for fossil fuel. Biogas is a possible alternative fuel from organic waste. Biogas has an increased content of carbon dioxide, which affects the speed of flame propagation, and a lower content of methane, which reduces its heat of combustion. However, the combined combustion of natural gas and biogas, provided that the mixture of fuel and oxidizer is well mixed, can, on the one hand, reduce the maximum adiabatic temperature in the combustion chamber of power boilers at TPPs, and, on the other, increase the stability of biogas combustion. For the combined combustion of natural gas and biogas in operating power boilers, it is necessary to reconstruct the existing burners. For a high-quality reconstruction of burners capable of providing stable and low-toxic combustion of fuel, it is important to have theoretical data on the combustion effect of combustion of combinations of organic fuels on the temperature distribution in the combustion zone and on its maximum value. In this paper, self-similar solutions of the energy equation for axisymmetric motion of a liquid (gas) in a model of a viscous incompressible medium are obtained. Basing on them, a stationary temperature field in swirling jets is constructed. A set of programs based on the ANSYS Fluent software solver has been developed for modeling and researching of thermal and gas-dynamic processes in the combustion chamber. On the basis of the k - ϵ (realizable) turbulence model, the combustion process of a swirling fuel-air mixture is simulated. The results of an analytical and numerical study of the temperature and carbon dioxide distribution in the jet are presented.

Abstract With energy shortages and increasing environmental problems, natural gas, as a clean energy, has the advantages of cheap price and large reserves and has become one of the main alternative fuels for marine diesel engines. For large bore natural gas engines, pre-chamber spark plug ignition can be used to increase engine efficiency. The engine mainly relies on the flame ejected from the pre-chamber to ignite the mixture of natural gas and air in the main combustion chamber. The ignition flame in the main combustion chamber is the main factor affecting the combustion process. Although the pre-chamber natural gas engines have been extensively studied, the characteristics of combustion in the pre-chamber and the development of ignition flame in the main combustion chamber have not been fully understood. In this study, a two-zone phenomenological combustion model of pre-chamber spark-ignition natural gas engines is established based on the exchange of mass and energy of the gas flow process in the pre-chamber and the main combustion chamber. The basic characteristics of the developed model are: a spherical flame surface is used to describe the combustion state in the pre-chamber, and according to the turbulent jet theory, the influence of turbulence on the state of the pilot flame is considered based on the Reynolds number. According to the phenomenological model, the time when the flame starts to be injected from the pre-chamber to the main combustion chamber, and the parameters such as the length of the pilot flame are analyzed. The model was verified by experimental data, and the results showed that the calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. It provides an effective tool for mastering the law of flame development and supporting the optimization of combustion efficiency.

The use of natural gas as an alternative fuels are motivated from the impact in deteriorating quality of air and the energy shortage from petroleum products. Through retrofitting, CI engine runs on CNG, will be able to reduce the negative impact mainly on the use of petroleum products. However, this required the modification of the combustion chamber geometry by reducing the compression ratio to value that suits combustion of CNG. In this present studies, four different shapes and geometries of combustion chamber were designed and simulate using CFD package powered by Ansys workbench, where k-ε turbulence model was used to predict the flow in the combustion chamber. The results of turbulence kinetic energy, velocity vectors and streamline are presented. The enhancement of air-fuel mixing inside the engine cylinder can be observed, where the design with re-entrance and lower center projection provide better results compared to other combustion geometries designs.

A numerical study of ignition and combustion in a glow plug (GP) assisted direct-injection natural gas (DING) engine is presented in this paper. The glow plug is shielded and the shield design is an important part of the combustion system development. The results simulated by KIVA-3V indicated that the ignition delay (ID) predicted by an in-cylinder pressure rise was different from that based on a temperature rise, attributed to the additional time required to burn more fuel to obtain a detectable pressure rise in the combustion chamber. This time difference for the ignition delay estimation can be 0.5 ms, which is significant relative to an ignition delay value of less than 2 ms. To further evaluate the time difference between the two different methods of ignition delay determination, sensitivity studies were conducted by changing the glow plug temperature, and rotating the glow plug shield opening angle towards the fuel jets. The results indicated that the ID method time difference varied from 0.3 to 0.8 ms for different combustion chamber configurations. In addition, this study also investigated the influences of different glow plug shield parameters on the natural gas ignition and combustion characteristics, by modifying the air gap between the glow plug and its shield, and by changing the shield opening size. The computational results indicated that a bigger air gap inside the shield can delay gas ignition, and a smaller shield opening can block the flame propagation for some specific fuel injection angles.

Studying closed gas turbine cycles on supercritical carbon dioxide is currently a promising issue in the development of power energy sector in terms of increasing energy efficiency and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Combustion of methane with oxygen in the combustion chamber occurs not in the nitrogen environment, but in the environment of carbon dioxide, that is the working fluid of the cycle, which is an inhibitor of chemical reactions. A large mass content of such a diluent of the reaction mixture in the volume of the chamber leads to the risks of significant chemical underburning, efficiency decrease of the combustion chamber and the cycle as a whole. The aim of the research is to study the kinetic parameters of the combustion of methane with oxygen in a supercritical CO2 diluent medium to ensure reliable and stable combustion of fuel by assessing the degree of the inhibitory effect of CO2 and determining its permissible amount in the active combustion zone of the combustion chamber. The research method is a numerical simulation of turbulent-kinetic processes of methane combustion in the combustion chamber using the reduced methane combustion mechanism. Ansys Fluent software package has been used. The authers have studied the impact of CO2 diluent on fuel cоmbustion in methane-oxygen combustion chambers. It is found that the combustor flame stabilization takes place if the content of СО2 diluent supplied to the mixture with oxidizer is 0,46–0,5 of mass fraction; additional СО2 diluent forms local low temperature zones which slow down the combustion process. When this happens, adding cooling СО2 into the flame stabilization zone should be eliminated. The study has found that no more than 20 % of the total carbon dioxide content should be supplied to the combustion chamber; to stabilize the flame and reduce its length, it is necessary to install blades to swirl the fuel and oxidizer mixed with CO2 at the inlet of the combustion chamber; CO2 supply for cooling should be carried out not less than 130 mm away from the burner mouth.

In this paper, the combustion characteristics of natural gas with high-temperature air combustion technology in a U-type combustion chamber were investigated by the numerical method. The results of the CFD-based mathematical modeling of rated condition were compared with experimental data including the maximum temperature, average temperature and NO emission. The research indicates that the combustion can be well simulated using the suggested numerical model. The temperature distribution, velocity distribution in the combustion chamber and NO emission were attained. In addition, the effects of some parameters such as oxygen concentration, excessive air ratio and combustion air temperature were discussed in detail. It provided primarily theoretic basis for further study of natural gas high temperature air combustion.

Abstract The conversion of existing diesel engines to spark ignition (SI) operation by adding a low-pressure injector in the intake manifold for fuel delivery and replacing the original high-pressure fuel injector with a spark plug to initiate and control the combustion process can reduce U.S. dependence on petroleum imports and increase natural gas (NG) applications in heavy-duty transportation sectors. Since the conventional diesel combustion chamber (i.e., flat-head-and-bowl-in-piston-chamber) creates high turbulence, the converted NG SI engine can operate leaner with stable and repeatable combustion process. However, existing literatures point to a long late-combustion duration and increased unburned hydrocarbon emissions in such retrofitted engines that maintained the original combustion chamber. Consequently, the main objective of this paper was to report recent findings of NG combustion characteristics inside a bowl-in-piston combustion chamber that will add to the general understanding of the phenomena. The new results indicated that the premixed NG burn inside the bowl-in-piston combustion chamber will separate into a bowl-burn and a squish-burn processes in terms of burning location and timing. The slow burning event in the squish region explains the low slope of the burn rate towards the end of combustion in existing studies (hence the longer late-combustion period). In addition, the less-favorable conditions for the combustion in the squish region explained the increased carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions.

Currently, one of the major trends in the research of contemporary combustion engines involves the potential use of alternative fuels. Considerable attention has been devoted to methane, which is the main component of Natural Gas (NG) and can also be obtained by purification of biogas. In compression-ignition engines fired with methane or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), it is necessary to apply a dual-fuel feeding system. This paper presents the effect of the proportion of CNG in a fuel dose on the process of combustion. The recorded time series of pressure in a combustion chamber was used to determine the repeatability of the combustion process and the change of fuel compression-ignition delay in the combustion chamber. It has been showed that NG does not burn completely in a dual-fuel engine. The best conditions for combustion are ensured with higher concentrations of gaseous fuel. NG ignition does not take place simultaneously with diesel oil ignition. Moreover, if a divided dose of diesel is injected, NG ignition probably takes place at two points, as diesel oil.
