Nanosecond response organic photodiodes: From device physics towards biosensor applications

ABSTRACTIn this work we investigate polymer photodiodes based on a blend system consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and the fullerene derivative (6,6)-phenyl C-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). An optimized low source impedance architecture allows measurements in the GHz range with minimum distortion, while at the same time allowing to probe the favourable sandwich device structure. We have studied the underlying device physics and investigated the influence of parameters such as active layer thickness and bias voltage on the transient photocurrent response. Using a numerical simulation software combining a self-consistent drift-diffusion model in conjunction with an optical model based on the transfer matrix method we model the transient photocurrent of polymer photodiodes. Transient photocurrent measurements utilizing this low impedance device architecture excited by 1.6 ns short laser pulses show very good correlation between simulated and measured results. Furthermore we have developed an encapsulation technique to integrate high-speed organic photodiodes onto standard printed circuit boards (PCBs) to avoid the degradation of the devices by humidity or oxygen.

ABSTRACTThe integration of optical interconnects in printed circuit boards (PCB) is a rapidly growing field worldwide due to a continuously increasing need for high-speed data transfer. There are any concepts discussed, among which are the integration of optical fibers or the generation of waveguides by UV lithography, embossing, or direct laser writing. The devices presented so far require many different materials and process steps, but particularly also highly-sophisticated assembly steps in order to couple the optoelectronic elements to the generated waveguides. In order to overcome these restrictions, an innovative approach is presented which allows the embedding of optoelectronic components and the generation of optical waveguides in only one optical material. This material is an inorganic-organic hybrid polymer, in which the waveguides are processed by two-photon absorption (TPA) processes, initiated by ultra-short laser pulses. In particular, due to this integration and the possibility ofin situpositioning the optical waveguides with respect to the optoelectronic components by the TPA process, no complex packaging or assembly is necessary. Thus, the number of necessary processing steps is significantly reduced, which also contributes to the saving of resources such as energy or solvents. The material properties and the underlying processes will be discussed with respect to optical data transfer in PCBs.

Laboratory automation is a key driver in biotechnology and an enabler for powerful new technologies and applications. In particular, in the field of personalized therapies, automation in research and production is a prerequisite for achieving cost efficiency and broad availability of tailored treatments. For this reason, we present the StemCellDiscovery, a fully automated robotic laboratory for the cultivation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in small scale and in parallel. While the system can handle different kinds of adherent cells, here, we focus on the cultivation of adipose-derived hMSCs. The StemCellDiscovery provides an in-line visual quality control for automated confluence estimation, which is realized by combining high-speed microscopy with deep learning-based image processing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm to detect hMSCs in culture at different densities and calculate confluences based on the resulting image. Furthermore, we show that the StemCellDiscovery is capable of expanding adipose-derived hMSCs in a fully automated manner using the confluence estimation algorithm. In order to estimate the system capacity under high-throughput conditions, we modeled the production environment in a simulation software. The simulations of the production process indicate that the robotic laboratory is capable of handling more than 95 cell culture plates per day.

AbstractAlthough photonics presents the fastest and most energy-efficient method of data transfer, magnetism still offers the cheapest and most natural way to store data. The ultrafast and energy-efficient optical control of magnetism is presently a missing technological link that prevents us from reaching the next evolution in information processing. The discovery of all-optical magnetization reversal in GdFeCo with the help of 100 fs laser pulses has further aroused intense interest in this compelling problem. Although the applicability of this approach to high-speed data processing depends vitally on the maximum repetition rate of the switching, the latter remains virtually unknown. Here we experimentally unveil the ultimate frequency of repetitive all-optical magnetization reversal through time-resolved studies of the dual-shot magnetization dynamics in Gd27Fe63.87Co9.13. Varying the intensities of the shots and the shot-to-shot separation, we reveal the conditions for ultrafast writing and the fastest possible restoration of magnetic bits. It is shown that although magnetic writing launched by the first shot is completed after 100 ps, a reliable rewriting of the bit by the second shot requires separating the shots by at least 300 ps. Using two shots partially overlapping in space and minimally separated by 300 ps, we demonstrate an approach for GHz magnetic writing that can be scaled down to sizes below the diffraction limit.

To research the performance optimization of high speed car diesel engine,firstly according to the characteristic of car diesel engine with Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT), one-dimensional cycle model of the engine was established by using simulation software BOOST and validated by experimental data in this paper. The turbine blades’ opening corresponding to different speed was determined. Therefore the problem that the VNT surges at low engine speed and the inlet air flow is insufficient at high speed was solved. Based on the above model, this paper improved the efficiency of the engine by optimizing the compression ratio and the distribution phase of camshaft and then used the experimental data to check the simulation results. Meanwhile the fuel consumption and the possibility of the engine operation roughness decreased.

The increased accuracy in high-speed positioning of the parallel robot effector in comparison with that of serial robots with a sequential structure is often the main reason for their use in various modern industries, such as the manufacture of printed circuit boards for microelectronics. However, despite the higher theoretical positioning accuracy, due to the kinematic structure of the parallel robot, in practice this characteristic largely depends on the accuracy of manufacturing individual elements of this mechanism, the most important of which are the gearboxes of the drives of its input pairs. A solution to the urgent problem of determining the effect of the manufacturing accuracy of planetary pinion gearboxes included in the drive of a five-link parallel robot on the positioning accuracy of its output link is proposed. A specific relationship has been determined between the grade of accuracy number of the gear part dimensions and the robot positioning accuracy. The unevenness of the positioning accuracy along the coordinate axes of its working area is revealed. It was found that near the area of certain robot positions the accuracy of its positioning drops sharply.
