This paper focuses on the nonlinear aeroelastic system identification method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) that uses time-delay and feedback elements. A typical two-dimensional wing section with control surface is modelled to illustrate the proposed identification algorithm. The response of the system, which applies a sine-chirp input signal on the control surface, is computed by time-marching-integration. A time-delay recurrent neural network (TDRNN) is employed and trained to predict the pitch angle of the system. The chirp and sine excitation signals are used to verify the identified system. Estimation results of the trained neural network are compared with numerical simulation values. Two types of structural nonlinearity are studied, cubic-spring and friction. The results indicate that the TDRNN can approach the nonlinear aeroelastic system exactly.

High altitude and long endurance (HALE) vehicle always adopt straight or swept configuration, which leads to the problem that the wings of UAV have high aspect ratio and are very flexible. This kind of flexible wing exhibits large deformation when aerodynamic forces are loaded on them and the structural nonlinearity should be considered. So the dynamic and flutter characteristics will be changed. In the engineering applications, the effects of structural geometric nonlinearities on the air vehicle design are the most concerns of aeroelasticity before a systematic flutter analysis for the air vehicle. because the solution for nonlinear flutter speed based on the CFD-CSD method is complex and time consuming. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient approach that can analyze the effect of structural geometric nonlinearities on the flutter characteristics of high aspect ratio wing quickly. And a straight wing and a straight-swept wing are analyzed to verify the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method. It is found that the effect of structural geometric nonlinearities has a strong effect on the flutter characteristic of the straight wing, but is weak on the straight-swept wing. And finally the impact of swept angle on the dynamic and flutter characteristics of straight-swept wing is also discussed.

Abstract Aeroelasticity is the study of the interaction of aerodynamic, elastic and inertia forces. When flexible structures, such as an airfoil, undergo wind excitation, divergence or flutter instability may arise. We study the dynamics of a two-degree-of-freedom (pitch and plunge) aeroelastic system with cubic structural nonlinearities. The aerodynamic forces are modeled as a piecewise linear function of the effective angle of attack. Stability and bifurcations of equilibria are analyzed. The effect of the structural nonlinearity is investigated. We find border collision, rapid, Hopf, saddle-node and pitchfork bifurcations. Bifurcation diagrams of the system were calculated utilizing MatCont and Mathematica.

A modified incremental harmonic balance method is presented to analyze the aeroelastic responses of a 2-DOF airfoil aeroelastic system with a nonsmooth structural nonlinearity. The current method, which combines the traditional incremental harmonic balance method and a fast Fourier transform, can be used to obtain the higher-order approximate solution for the aeroelastic responses of a 2-DOF airfoil aeroelastic system with a nonsmooth structural nonlinearity using significantly fewer linearized algebraic equations than the traditional method, and the dominant frequency components of the response can be obtained by a fast Fourier transform of the numerical solution. Thus, periodic solutions can be obtained, and the calculation process can be simplified. Furthermore, the nonsmooth nonlinearity was expanded into a Fourier series. The procedures of the modified incremental harmonic balance method were demonstrated using systems with hysteresis and free play nonlinearities. The modified incremental harmonic balance method was validated by comparing with the numerical solutions. The effect of the number of harmonics on the solution precision as well as the effect of the free-play and stiffness ratio on the response amplitude is discussed.
