The fellowship of research productivity (PQ) granted by the national council for scientific and technological development (CNPq), besides the financial support, renders a significant status among Brazilian researchers of all areas of knowledge. Consequently, both the profile and the criteria for holding a PQ fellowship become of interest to the entire Brazilian scientific community. In this paper, we model the decision criteria as a weighted sum of the scientific production and the supervisory experience of an applicant for PQ fellowship. The scientific production is measured as the number of publications grouped according to  the QUALIS system provided by the Brazilian federal agency for the improvement of higher education (CAPES). The Lattes curricula of the successful applicants for the PQ fellowship in the field of mathematics and statistics, along with the curricula of many non-PQ fellows of similar institutions, were used to estimate the criteria adopted in the last call for PQ <br />fellowship in category 2. By allowing a certain tolerance, the model reproduced the decision criteria within acceptable bounds using the previous and the current QUALIS systems over a database composed of 234 curricula. As a consequence, the model may help to decide whether a researcher applicant is worthy to receive a PQ fellowship. Furthermore, it confirmed the recognized value of publications in journals with an elevated rank in the QUALIS system.

ABSTRACT Objective To characterize researchers in the Nutrition field awarded with Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico research productivity fellowships and evaluate their scientific production according to an analysis of curricula registered on the Lattes Platform. Methods The study is cross-sectional and descriptive in scope, and was developed from October 2014 to February 2015. The productivity fellowships/Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico researchers were identified from the Lattes Platform, and their curriculum lattes were downloaded for data collation. Information on the profiles of the researchers and the bibliometric data of productivity (published articles, articles and citations registered on ISI/Web of Science and Scopus databases, impact of the publications, and academic advising) were collected. Results Eighty researchers were identified and evaluated. A total of 67.5% were female and 53.5% were classified as category 2. Approximately two-thirds (65.0%) were located in Southeastern Brazil. The sum of articles published by the researchers from the beginning of their career until the end of the study came to 7,358 (median=84 per researcher, interquartile range=53–285). Of these publications, 45.0% were indexed in the Web of Science and 62.0% in Scopus. Of the journals where the articles were published, 70.0% had an impact factor. Conclusion Most publications were performed in journals with an impact factor, indicating the influence of Brazilian nutrition studies on society and their potential for guiding public policies on nutrition and health.

AbstractIdentifying and studying the formation of researchers over the years is a challenging task, since the current repositories of theses and dissertations are cataloged in a decentralized manner in different digital libraries, many of them with limited scope. In this article, we report our efforts towards building a large repository to record the Brazilian academic genealogy. For this, we collected data from the Lattes platform, an internationally recognized initiative that provides a repository of researchers’ curricula maintained by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and developed a user-oriented platform, named Science Tree, to generate the academic genealogy trees of Brazilian researchers from them, also providing additional data resulting from a series of analyses regarding the main properties of such trees. In order to assess the facilities provided by the Science Tree platform, we conducted an experimental evaluation of it with two groups of users, the first one consisting of 286 researchers who answered an evaluation questionnaire and the second one involving seven researchers with large academic experience who agreed to participate in a face-to-face assessment conducted through a personal interview, during which they performed some pre-defined tasks. The results of these two evaluations with typical users enabled us not only to validate the main features offered by the platform, but also to identify new ones that could be added to it in the future. Overall, our effort has allowed us to identify interesting aspects related to the academic career of the Brazilian researchers, thus highlighting the importance of generating and cataloging their academic genealogy trees.
