New photochromic 2-acylaminoderivatives of 1-p-t-butylphenoxy-9,10-anthraquinone with the various substituents in acyl groups are synthesized. The quantitative dependence of photochemical characteristics of synthesized compounds on character of substituent and nature of the solvent are established. Comparative study of their properties in solutions and polymer layers is realized. Tests show that acylaminoderivatives can be used as components of photochromic materials.

Objects of the study are derivatives of 1-p-t-butyl-phenoxy-9,10-anthraquinone with the various substituents in the position 2 and 4. As a result new anthraquinone derivatives have been obtained and the comparative study of their photochromic properties in solutions and polymer layers have been realized. The direct dependence of photographic characteristics of samples on chemical structure and conditions of thermal treatment was established. Tests have shown that the acylaminoderivatives of 1-aryloxy-9, 10-anthra-quinone synthesized can be used as light sensitive components of photochromic materials for the modern optical recording and information processing.

Two novel donor–π–acceptor-type dithienylethene derivatives, in which the triphenylamine group acts as electron donor and the formyl group functions as electron acceptor, have been developed. Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS (ESI). Investigation of their photochromic properties indicated that they had good photochromic behaviour and excellent fatigue resistance on irradiation with UV or visible light. DFT calculations further validated these experimental results for photochromic behaviour. Moreover, these compounds can be utilised as versatile building blocks to construct novel near-infrared photochromic materials.

Monodisperse porous polystyrene microspheres were prepared with the mixed solution of ethanol and water as dispersion medium and poly (vinylpyrrolidone) was used as dispersant. The even size of microspheres prepared at optimal process was about 1μm. Photochromic microspheres were obtained using polystyrene microspheres to absorb the photochromic materials. The effect of dispersion medium on the microspheres morphology was investigated. The adsorption parameters affecting microspheres adsorption quantity, such as the concentration of spiropyran solution and adsorption temperature, were studied in detail. Furthermore, photochromic properties of the microspheres were analyzed and PVA as coating was used to increase the fatigue resistance of photochromic microcapsules. The photochromic microspheres obtained could rapid reversibly change color under UV or sun light at room temperature and common pressure.

A novel unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative containing thiophene moieties, in which a methoxy group was substituted at the para-positions of the terminal phenyl ring, was synthesized. Its photochromic properties were investigated in detail, the results indicated that the diarylethene 1o changed the color from colorless to blue, which the absorption maxima were observed at 611 and 627 nm in hexane and PMMA film when irradiation with 297 nm UV light. Additionally, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1o exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 305 nm in hexane when excited at 322 nm and the fluorescence intensity progressively decreased accompany with the photocyclization occurs. Finally, using this diarylethene as recording medium, polarization optical recording was carried out successfully.

An asymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(3,5-Dimethyl-4-isoxazolyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(p-ethoxyphenyl)-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1o) was synthesized and its photochromic properties were investigated. Upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, 1o exhibited photochromism in hexane solution. The kinetic experiments showed that the cyclization and cycloreversion processes were zeroth and first order reaction, respectively. Moreover, diarylethene 1o also exhibited obviously fluorescence switches along with the photochromism.

This paper focuses on computations technique within the framework of the TD-DFT theory for studying the relationship between structure-properties of reversible conversion of photochromic materials. Specifically, we report on 1′,3′-dihydro-8-methoxy-1′,3′,3′-trimethyl-6-nitrospiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2′-(2H)-indole] (SP) and its isomers. TD-DFT calculated UV-Vis electronic spectra of the closed and open isomers of this photochromic material are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. Moreover, this paper reports on the results of theoretical investigations of reactivity indices that may govern the conversion between spiropyrans and its isomers. In addition, the solvent and rigidity of the medium significantly control the thermal bleaching of the photogenerated colored isomers and hence the switch ability pattern of the photochromic material. The effect of molecular structure computed by DFT in gas-phase and solvents onCspiro-Obond length has been shown to correlate with photochromic properties. For this compound, DFT optimized geometry could be used to predict photochromism. Furthermore, in an attempt to predict the driving force for MC → SP, this work explores, for the first time, profitable exploitation of the calculated and visualized mapped electrostatic potential energy surfaces (ESP map). Interestingly, it seems that the electrostatic potential forces over the molecular fragments govern spirobond rupture/closure reactions. Thermodynamically, all-trans-colored isomer (CTT) is the most stable merocyanine-like form.
