Anemia during pregnancy is a major world health concern especially in developing countries affecting the life of the women and the future of the child thereby influencing the present as well the future of the nation and the world at large. Nutritional deficiency still emerges out the main cause of iron deficiency anemia affecting the life of the pregnant women. The iron deficiency anemia has a major say in adverse pregnancy outcomes like pre term delivery, IUGR, morbidity even leading to mortality, however it is noted that severe anemia has a significant effect than moderate and mild anemia. A well balanced diet can avert this condition, nonetheless iron supplementations as per the government guidelines and various treatment available also help to tackle the situation. Education of the women and more awareness programmes on health, pregnancy and nutrition by the stakeholders can further reduce the incidence of anemia in pregnancy.

ABSTRACT Introduction Several intravenous iron preparations are available for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Some of these require multiple small infusions to prevent labile iron reactions, while iron dextran (DEX) is associated with a risk of potentially serious anaphylactic reactions. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), a non-DEX intravenous iron, is an effective and a safe option, which can be administered in high single doses without serious adverse effects. Objective The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FCM in the treatment of IDA in gynecological patients. Materials and methods It was an open, single-arm study including 442 women of age more than 18 years with definitive diagnosis of IDA and hemoglobin (Hb) between 4 and 11 gm% from December 2013 to November 2016. Out of these, 25 women were lost to follow-up and were excluded from the study. Intravenous FCM (500—1500 mg) was administered and the improvement in Hb levels and iron stores was assessed after 3 weeks of total dose infusion. Results Out of the 442 women, 417 women were included in the analysis. Most of the women were in the age group of 30 to 39 years. Most of the women had mild anemia as per the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Mean Hb levels significantly increased over a period of 3 weeks after FCM administration. Other parameters like total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin, and iron also had a significant improvement after FCM administration. No serious life-threatening adverse events were observed after FCM administration. Conclusion Intravenous FCM is an effective and a safe treatment option for IDA and has an advantage of single administration of high doses without serious adverse effects. Background: Anemia in adolescent girls possess greatest burden on their health as it leads to poor cognitive development, poor reproductive health and if not treated may lead to intrauterine growth retardation in their developing fetus. The prevalence of anemia among adolescent is 27% in developing country and 6% in developed country. The Government of India has launched National Anemia Control Programme, to prevent and control anaemia in children and adolescents. But the problem is still persisting because of many issues like - poor palatability, intolerance to the drug used, poor absorption of the drugs used, constipation, discoloration of stool, unpleasant odor and taste etc. result in poor compliance and therefore non adherence to the therapy which finally results in poor improvement. By looking at the magnitude of the problem, an Ayurveda drug Vajravatakmandura has been selected for the study and the present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of the trial drug in iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls. Material and methods: 100 subjects satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and were randomly divided in two groups. In group A, the trial drug Vajravatakmaņdura was administered and in group B, IFA tablets were given for two month of duration with follow up at every fortnight. Result: Both the trial and control groups showed extremely significant result over subjective parameters. Trial drug Vajravatakmaņdura in group A was found more effective over the subjective parameters - weakness, palpitation, pallor and loss of appetite with % gain of 39.77%, 39.39%, 39.17%, 38.09% respectively. Statistical analysis between before and after treatment findings of objective parameters, extremely significant (P less than 0.0001) improvement was found in both groups in all parameters, except for RBC count in group A, which was significant. No adverse effects were reported during entire period of study by any of the patients in trial group treated with trial drug. Conclusion: The trial drug “Vajravatakmandura” is effective, safe and palatable for the management of iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls.

Aim: To study the relationship of Iron Deficiency anemia (IDA) with severity of acute ischemic stroke. Study Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study. Place & Duration of Study: Department of Medicine, Mayo Hospital, Lahore from March 2020 to February 2021 Methods: A descriptive study of cross-sectional type was done on 200 individuals who had acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and were hospitalized at Mayo Hospital Lahore. Consecutive non-probability convenience sampling method was used to gather the data. Severity of stroke was assessed at the time of admission using the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale, (NIHSS) at the same time blood complete examination along with peripheral blood film was done to diagnose anemia in these patients. Iron studies were done to diagnose iron deficiency anemia (IDA). P-value less than 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: About 200individuals presenting with AIS were enrolled in the research work. Anemia according to World Health Organization was seen in 80(40%) and was not present in 120(60%) patients. Among the subjects who had anemia, 16(20%) had a minor AIS, 23(28.75%) had a moderately severe AIS, and 41(51.25%) reported with a severe AIS, according to NIHSS criteria. A notable relationship was found to exist between anemia and stroke severity, (P-value 0.000). Conclusion: Anemia was a commonly found in individuals with acute stroke due to ischemia and had direct relation with severity of stroke. Aim. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and small for gestational age (SGA) in early third trimester pregnancies. Methods. A total of 4800 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. We included pregnant women who had iron deficiency anemia between 26+0 and 30+0 weeks of gestation and delivered singletons between 37+0 and 41+6 weeks of gestation. Patients were divided into four groups according to anemia level: (1) hemoglobin (Hb) < 7 mg/dl (n = 80), (2) Hb 7–9.9 mg/dl (n = 320), (3) Hb 10–10.9 mg/dl (n = 1300), and (4) Hb > 11 mg/dl (n = 3100, control group). The primary outcome of this study was the presence of SGA. Results. The demographic and obstetric characteristics were similar among all the groups. Maternal age, BMI <30 kg/m2, nulliparity rates, and previous cesarean delivery rates were similar among groups. Ethnicity was significantly different in the severe and moderate anemia groups (<0.001). Mean fetal weight was 2900 ± 80 g in the severe anemia group, 3050 ± 100 g in the moderate anemia group, 3350 ± 310 g in the mild anemia group, and 3400 ± 310 g in the control group. Fetal weight was significantly lower in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). The SGA rate was 18.7% in the severe anemia group, 12.1% in the moderate anemia group, 5.3% in the mild anemia group, and 4.9% in the control group. SGA was significantly higher in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). Conclusion. The results of this study indicated that early third trimester severe and moderate iron deficiency anemia was associated with SGA. Iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women may lead to low birth weight.

Introduction. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-2, possesses varying degrees of susceptibility and lethality worldwide and WHO declared this as a pandemic of this century. Aim. In this background, the aim of this present narrative is to provide a complementary overview of how low iron stores and mild anemia offers protection from infectious diseases like COVID-19 by restricting the viral replication and also to suggest some potential adjuvant therapeutic interventions. Material and methods. Therefore, we performed a literature search reviewing pertinent articles and documents. PubMed, Google Scholar, Chemrxiv, MedRxiv, BioRxiv, Preprints and ResearchGate were investigated. Analysis of the literature. Recent studies reported drastic systemic events taking place that contribute to the severe clinical outcomes such as decreased hemoglobin indicating anemia, hypoxia, altered iron metabolism, hypercoagulability, oxidative stress, cytokine storm, hyper-ferritinemia and thus Multi Organ Failure, reportedly hailed as the hallmark of the COVID-19 hyper- inflammatory state. Interestingly it is globally observed that, countries with higher Socio-economic status (SES) have considerably lower prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) but higher Case Fatality Rate (CFR) rate due to COVID-19 while, low SES countries characterized by the higher prevalence of IDA, are less affected to COVID-19 infection and found to have less CFR, which is almost half to that of the higher SES counterpart. Conclusion. Present review presumed that,low iron stores and mild anemia may play a beneficial role in some cases by offering protection from infectious diseases as low iron restricts the viral replication.Thus, suggested iron chelation or iron sequestration as an alternative beneficial adjuvant in treating COVID-19 infection.

According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency anemia affects more than 30% of the world's population. In the Russian Federation, anemia is diagnosed in 35,6% of pregnant women, and the prevalence rate among children in the first year of life is about 83,8 ‰. In the Stavropol Territory, more than 10 thousand cases of anemia are registered annually, of which half are the first. More than 20% of these cases are diagnosed in children and adolescents. In this regard, there is a steady dynamics in the consumption of a specific nomenclature of antianemic drugs at various levels of the drug supply system: federal, regional and municipal. The purpose of the work was to analyze the availability of antianemic drugs used in the treatment of patients living in the city of Pyatigorsk, Stavropol Territory. In the course of work, we used methods of content analysis, analytical, direct observation, grouping and comparison. The studies were carried out from november 2019 to february 2020 on the basis of 11 pharmacy of various legal forms included in the pharmacy chains «Vita +», «Gorzdrav», and the «Pharmacy Warehouse» located in Pyatigorsk. When studying the pharmaceutical range of antianemic drugs, it was found that at the municipal level it includes 12 trade names of drugs based on Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. Analysis of the liquidity of the prices of antianemic drugs in the pharmacies of Pyatigorsk and the solvency of the population showed the economic affordability of most of the studied range of drugs for patients. An analysis of the width and depth of the range of antianemic drugs for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia revealed the presence of reserves for increasing the range of products for patients. It is concluded that it is necessary to consolidate the efforts of medical and pharmaceutical workers to expand the range of antianemic drugs used by patients, which will increase the quality of medical care.

INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency is the world most prevalent nutritional disorder which is associated with impaired neurocognitive function in infants. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in Portuguese infants remains unknown. The last study was performed by one of us (HA) in 1994 in a sample of 188 infants revealing a prevalence of IDA of 19%. The main objective of this study is to determine the current prevalence of IDA in a sample of infants nine months of age in Braga, Portugal. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study on a random sample of infants born from September 2016 to February 2017 at Braga Hospital. They were evaluated for anthropometry, socio-economic factors, feeding regime and a blood sample was taken for blood cell counts, serum ferritin and C reactive protein. RESULTS Forty-two infants were included. The prevalence of IDA was 7.1%.  Nine infants were anemic (21%); moderate anemia was observed in 2/9 of infants and mild anemia in 7/9 infants. Of the 3 infants with IDA, 2 had been exclusively breastfed until 6 months. CONCLUSIONS Compared to a study from 1994, there may have been a reduction in the prevalence of IDA in this area in Portugal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers iron deficiency anemia a serious public health problem in developing countries and recommends the use of iron tablets containing iron II for prevention and treatment. The results of Mössbauer measurements of the drug “Ferretab”, which is widely used in medicine for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, are presented. This drug contains fumarate iron, C4H2FeO4, and has a small amount of folic acid. In this paper, the temperature dependence of isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values of 57Fe nuclei in iron fumarate were studied. The measurements show that when the temperature increases, the isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of 57Fe nuclei in iron fumarate decreases, the decrease in the isomer shift value is associated with the second-order Doppler effect. Based on Mössbauer measurements, the Debye temperature of this drug was determined. The Debye temperature gives us information about the strong bonding of 57Fe atoms with the environment. A high temperature value means a strong bond and vice versa, a small temperature value means a bond with low rigidity. The coupling constant (Debye temperature) defined for “Ferretab” iron nuclei has been compared with different Debye temperatures found in previous studies on some iron deficiency anemia drugs. Additionally, the values were compared with various clinical studies conducted in in-vivo and in-vitro for comparison of the efficacy of some of the most commonly used drugs to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. According to these comparisons, it was established a possible relationship between the Debye temperature of the iron atoms of the drugs under study and their effectiveness. It was noted that the lower the Debye temperature of iron atoms of the drug, the more iron absorbs the human body.
