Academy’s First Meeting Exceeds All Expectations! The first national Academy meeting cosponsored with Neonatal Network® will take place next month at the Hyatt Regency hotel in New Orleans. When planning for its first ever meeting, the planning committee was conservative and estimated an attendance of 350 to 400 nurses. However, whether it is the exceptional program, the low conference tuition fee, or the draw of a truly unique city, attendance is over 700 as this is being written at the end of June. It would not be unrealistic to forecast a final attendance figure of nearly 1,000 NICU nurses for this meeting.

Academy’s National Advisory BoardThe members of the National Advisory Board have a broad range of experience and expertise in neonatal care. The Advisory Board met informally in New Orleans to discuss the direction Academy will take in the future. Unfortunately, only half of the Advisory Board could attend the meeting on such short notice. Although the full Advisory Board will probably not meet until next year’s national meeting, the Advisory Board will work together this year to lay out what the Academy can be doing to provide you with a first class association.

The Academy’s Second Annual National Neonatal Nurses Meeting took place this past September in New Orleans and it was a blast! The speakers were fantastic and we owe a great debt of gratitude to them for the enthusiasm they showed throughout the meeting. You could feel that the meeting was going to be electric when the very first speaker, Dr. Billie Ann Wilson, had the audience laughing and incredulous at the same time. Speakers like Lisa Miller and John Lantos kept the rapt attention of the audience during the general sessions. Workshops were no less excellent as faculty members like Wally Carlo, Dianne Charsha, Jamieson Jones, Susie Orlando, and Jay Goldsmith shared their knowledge and wisdom.

You may have noticed that pink is the color of the hour. The choice was not made haphazardly, but is the culmination of a great deal of research by color analysts, fabric manufacturers, clothing designers, and others who make a living creating and fulfilling our desire for the “new” and exciting fashions of the day. Not being one to fall behind, the Academy is now offering a beautiful pink, crew-neck sweatshirt with the Academy logo embroidered on the front. You may see some of these around as they were available at the Academy’s advanced practice meeting in New Orleans. However, if pink is not to your liking, the Academy now has a great, hooded black sweatshirt with the Academy’s logo on the front. So, if pink happens not to be the “new black” for you, you can always go with the Academy’s black sweatshirt and be perfectly in style.

Why You Should Come to Las VegasAt the end of last year’s meeting in New Orleans, we gave the ten best reasons why the attendees should come to our Las Vegas meeting this year. Although the list provided was intended to be humorous, there are several great reasons why you should consider coming to the meeting this year. The first reason is simply the quality of the educational program that is being presented. Fantastic and knowledgeable speakers from around the country will be presenting the latest information about neonatal care.

Reports of past meetings usually focus on the wonderful speakers and events that take place during the meeting. In Chicago at the 5th National Neonatal Nurses Meeting sponsored by The Academy of Neonatal Nursing and Neonatal Network®, things were far from normal. The speakers were wonderful and the workshop sessions were full of NICU nurses from most of the country. What was missing were nurses from the Gulf Coast, and especially those from New Orleans, who were still reeling from the horrific destruction of Hurricane Katrina.
