How to deploy and manage, in an efficient and adaptive way, complex applications across multiple heterogeneous cloud platforms is one of the problems that have emerged with the cloud revolution. In this paper we present context, motivations and objectives of the EU research project SeaClouds, which aims at enabling a seamless adaptive multi-cloud management of complex applications by supporting the distribution, monitoring and migration of application modules over multiple heterogeneous cloud platforms. After positioning SeaClouds with respect to related cloud initiatives, we present the SeaClouds architecture and discuss some of its aspect, such as the use of the OASIS standard TOSCA and the compatibility with the OASIS CAMP initiative.

AbstractCloud computing offers a flexible pay-as-you-go model for provisioning application resources, which enables applications to scale on-demand based on the current workload. In many cases, though, users face the single vendor lock-in effect, missing opportunities for optimal and adaptive application deployment across multiple clouds. Several cloud modelling languages have been developed to support multi-cloud resource management, but still they lack holistic cloud management of all aspects and phases. This work defines the Cloud Application Modelling and Execution Language (CAMEL), which (i) allows users to specify the full set of design time aspects for multi-cloud applications, and (ii) supports the models@runtime paradigm that enables capturing an application’s current state facilitating its adaptive provisioning. CAMEL has been already used in many projects, domains and use cases due to its wide coverage of cloud management features. Finally, CAMEL has been positively evaluated in this work in terms of its usability and applicability in several domains (e.g., data farming, flight scheduling, financial services) based on the technology acceptance model (TAM).

The subject of the article is the review of methods for obtaining data on the amount of losses generated and food wastage in the agricultural production sector. The topic are also recommended methods for collecting this data in the agri-food chain at the EU level. Agriculture is the first link in this chain and the most food losses occur in it. The article presents the determinants of measuring losses and food waste in agriculture, the importance of defining and monitoring the intended use of the product and qualifying losses as food waste. The methods used to quantify the level of food losses in agriculture were also used in the PROM research project implemented under the GOSPOSTRATEG Program.

This article reviews a research project, based on a survey of 500 companies, to identify the main barriers which European companies face when seeking to extend their financial participation plans in their home country to their employees working for the group throughout the European Union. The research project reveals a reasonable ‘spread’ of financial participation plan types across the EU. The different types of schemes differ with regard to the numbers of eligible workers and participation levels. The country distribution of plans confirms the impact of national regulations and tax incentives, as well as social and cultural influences on the financial participation practices across the EU.

Cloud computing migrations are increasing rapidly. The main influencing factor being IT management costs. IoT-based enterprises that started their cloud journey by setting up small private clouds within their enterprise have often found that as the applications and services they use broaden. Then the shift towards incorporating public clouds becomes inevitable. The current problem that many of these firms are encountering is the difficulty of managing multiple clouds that reside within different vendors running on different platforms, computational requirements, and vendor SLAs. Lack of support for a single standard for an overall multi-cloud hybrid model exposes the hybrid IT-management to further threats. This makes it difficult for an adopting enterprise to manage and maintain its cloud-based systems during peak performance hours, which often leads to system downtime. This chapter discusses various SLA issues specific to a hybrid multi-cloud environment and suggests possible solutions to help adopting firms in their management.

Jean Raspail’s controversial 1973 novel The camp of the saints predicts mass migration to Europe that will destroy European civilization. Decades later, the book has accurately predicted the hundreds of thousands of refugees arriving in Europe annually, prompting a continent-wide crisis. From Lesbos and Lampedusa to the Canary Islands and Calais, no one seems to know how to stem the flow of humanity. Borders are being resurrected, despite Schengen and European Union (EU) agreements, in an effort to control the movement of populations. European governments disagree on how to proceed and some are suggesting that the EU could be torn apart by differing approaches to the problem. But does this have to be the response to the migration crisis? This paper compares the predictions of The camp of the saints to events in Europe today and critiques the book’s conclusions with regard to what is an ancient phenomenon: movements of migrants from surplus to deficit labor settings. The paper will also evaluate the response to migrants in the United States under its populist president, Donald Trump, and will review related issues in other parts of the world: Turkey, Russia, and Canada. Contrary to Raspail’s predictions, world leaders will need to accept what has already become a de facto reality: large scale admission of migrants and refugees to the EU and North America, as full citizens, will be the only realistic way to preserve prosperity in the years to come.

Cloud computing is a model that permits usage of a distributed resource for cloud users using the pay-as-you-use method. It offers many advantages to users and companies, in terms of various resources and applications as a service. In spite of the existence of these advantages, there are a few limitations that place constraints on the utilization of a cloud computing environment. Security is an important concern in a cloud computing environment as it probes various security attacks. Therefore, in this work, a novel quantum-based Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA) model is proposed for encryption of forensic reports during storage or data sharing on clouds. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a suitable simulation environment is designed for a multi-cloud environment. Experimental results reveal the proposed approach can efficiently encrypt and store data on multiple clouds without introducing potential overheads. Therefore, the proposed approach is more efficient for real-time applications.
