This paper provides interesting insights into the practices of banks and institutional setting in Sri Lanka. The sustainability and stability of banks that makes up an economy’s banking system should be sound at all time. This paper aimed at analyzing the determinants of banking sector stability in Sri Lanka. The study used a broad set of macro and bank level data covering 22 commercial banks for the period 1996-2016. The fixed effect GLS panel data model tested in this paper sets the relationship between bank stability measure; Z-score and business environment which includes bank characteristics and the elements of macro environment. The analysis of the study revealed lower level of Z-scores and thus lower level of bank stability, indicating a higher risk associated with the commercial banking sector in Sri Lanka.  From among the variables tested, strong evidence was found for a positive effect of bank efficiency on bank stability and a negative effect of credit growth on bank stability. At macro level, bank stability is promoted at a higher rate when the economy is more developed and stable. The results imply that efficiency of commercial banks needs to be further improved and regulatory and policy environment should be strengthened to manage the credit growth at the bank level. Further, it is suggestive to strengthening bank supervision and other financial infrastructure in order to ensure sustainability of the banking sector. Thus, the present paper contributes the current banking literature by unveiling the explicit and unforeseen economic implications associate with individual bank operations and macro imbalance which are particularly unique in underdeveloped countries.

The purpose of this study can be seen through the major attention that was given to the problem of non-performing loans by the banking institutions. Such attention was given to this problem due to the several impacts it has upon commercial banks and which may extend to affect the whole banking system, the current study aimed at identifying whether there is a statistically significant impact for the non - performing loans upon the prices of stocks or not in Jordanian commercial banks at the significance level of (a = 0.05). This study was concerned with investigating the Jordanian commercial banking sector during the period of (2005 –2015). The current study has given great attention to this sector because it is considered as the most vital sector in the Jordanian economic system. This study also shows that there is need for training workers in applying the credit policy that is being adopted. Such training should raise the practical efficiency levels of those employees. The study also showed that banks’ control should be stricter and they should set more dissuasive penalties in relation to granting facilities without having adequate guarantees.

International economic integration is an inevitable trend and an objective requirement for any country in the current period of development. However, this process, in addition to creating certain advantages and opportunities for countries to participate in integration, also puts these countries in the face of difficulties and challenges. The roadmap for international economic integration puts the enterprises of developing countries in general, the system of joint stock commercial banks in particular, in the face of a new business environment with fierce competitive pressures and unbalanced competitors. Therefore, the research and analysis of the correlation between factors and profits of the Vietnamese joint stock commercial banking system in the current integration period to provide practical solutions which improve the performance of joint stock commercial banks is an urgent issue. From the above practice, this article examines the relationship between asset quality, credit risk provisioning costs, and profitability of joint stock commercial banks in Vietnam through ROE. The paper has evaluated this relationship by using table regression analysis with data collected from 2012 to 2019 at 28 joint stock commercial banks. Data analyzed on the Stata software and the results show a positive relationship between the quality of bank assets and returns and the inverse relationship between the cost of provisioning for credit losses and the profitability of joint stock commercial banks in Vietnam during the above period. Based on this result, a number of recommendations have been proposed to help joint stock commercial banks in Vietnam grow steadily in the condition of the economy being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the relative efficiency of commercial banks in three developing countries in Europe (North Macedonia, Serbia, and Croatia) in the period from 2015 to 2019, and to provide targets for improvement for the inefficient banks by using DEA. The variables are selected under the income-based approach. Based on the output-oriented BCC model, unusual results are obtained for a few commercial banks in each country, that is, they are BCC relative efficient, which is contrary to the real situation. In order to identify outliers that can affect the efficiency results, a super-efficiency procedure is applied so that banks with a super-efficiency score higher than 1.2 (outliers) or for which a feasible solution was not found are considered in detail and removed, and then the output-oriented BCC model is rerun. Based on the obtained results, the Macedonian commercial banking system shows the highest efficiency (91.1%), followed by the Croatian (90.9%) and the Serbian (81.9%) banking system. The estimated targets for improvement of the inefficient commercial banks could help their top bank management in better resource allocation and making fact-based and faster decisions by which they can improve the operation of the banks they lead and contribute to the stability of the financial system.

Despite core banking, banks also engage in off-balance-sheet (OBS) market activities. In many developed banking industries, OBS activities have grown to be significant during the last two decades. This paper provides rather scarce evidence on the competitiveness among banks for OBS activities and its impact on the degree of banking sector competition in Sri Lanka. Panzar-Ross H statistic approach employing in this study to estimate bank competition used a comprehensive set of bank-level data of the whole commercial banking sector in Sri Lanka covering the period 1996-2018. The first-round analysis of the study uncovers substantial differences among banks concerning the OBS activities. EGLS panel estimation procedure applied in this study provides evidence for a lower level of competitiveness among Sri Lankan banks for OBS activities. More interestingly, the findings further reveal that the degree of competitiveness for OBS activities has a significant positive impact on the overall competitiveness of the banking sector in Sri Lanka.  These results suggest banking institutions re-visit their business models with greater emphasis on nonconventional banking activities in enhancing bank-level efficiency and hence positively contributing to the overall competitiveness of the banking sector.

In this article, using a combination of risk-related factors, we address the governance of financial institutions, mainly Vietnam’s commercial banks, in light of such international standards as of Basel II and III. Additionally, we employ multiple regression approach to shed light on the effect of each type of risk on bank performance and propose a few recommendations for effectively governing the commercial banking system of Vietnam until 2020.
