AbstractIn this paper, we attempted to measure the effect of Bach’s section, which presents a high-power coefficient in the standard Savonius model, on the performance of the helical Savonius wind turbine, by observing the parameters affecting turbine performance. Assessment methods based on the tip speed ratio, torque variation, flow field characterizations, and the power coefficient are performed. The present issue was stimulated using the turbulence model SST (k- ω) at 6, 8, and 10 m/s wind flow velocities via COMSOL software. Numerical simulation was validated employing previous articles. Outputs demonstrate that Bach-primary and Bach-developed wind turbine models have less flow separation at the spoke-end than the simple helical Savonius model, ultimately improving wind turbines’ total performance and reducing spoke-dynamic loads. Compared with the basic model, the Bach-developed model shows an 18.3% performance improvement in the maximum power coefficient. Bach’s primary model also offers a 12.4% increase in power production than the initial model’s best performance. Furthermore, the results indicate that changing the geometric parameters of the Bach model at high velocities (in turbulent flows) does not significantly affect improving performance.

PurposeThis paper aims to design an optimum vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and assess its techno-economic performance for wind energy harvesting at high-speed railway in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachThis project adopted AutoCAD and ANSYS modeling tools to design and optimize the blade of the turbine. The site selected has a railway of 30 km with six stops. The vertical turbines are placed 1 m apart from each other considering the optimum tip speed ratio. The power produced and net present value had been analyzed to evaluate its techno-economic viability.FindingsComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0020 blade has been carried out. For a turbine with wind speed of 50 m/s and swept area of 8 m2, the power generated is 245 kW. For eight trains that operate for 19 h/day with an interval of 30 min in nonpeak hours and 15 min in peak hours, total energy generated is 66 MWh/day. The average cost saved by the train stations is RM 16.7 mil/year with battery charging capacity of 12 h/day.Originality/valueWind energy harvesting is not commonly used in Malaysia due to its low wind speed ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 m/s. Conventional wind turbine requires a minimum cut-in wind speed of 11 m/s to overcome the inertia and starts generating power. Hence, this paper proposes an optimum design of VAWT to harvest an unconventional untapped wind sources from railway. The research finding complements the alternate energy harvesting technologies which can serve as reference for countries which experienced similar geographic constraints.

A small vertical axis wind turbine with wind speed self-adapting was designed. The diameter and height of the turbine were both 0.7m. It featured that the blades were composed of movable and fixed blades, and the opening and closing of the movable blades realized the wind speed self-adapting. Aerodynamic performance of this new kind turbine was tested in a simple wind tunnel. Then the self-starting and power coefficient of the turbine were studied. The turbine with load could reliably self-start and operate stably even when the wind velocity was only 3.6 m/s. When the wind velocity was 8 m/s and the load torque was 0.1Nm, the movable blades no longer opened and the wind turbine realized the conversion from drag mode to lift mode. With the increase of wind speed, the maximum power coefficient of the turbine also improves gradually. Under 8 m/s wind speed, the maximum power coefficient of the turbine reaches to 12.26%. The experimental results showed that the new turbine not only improved the self-starting ability of the lift-style turbine, but also had a higher power coefficient in low tip speed ratio.

Renewable energy hybrid systems give a good solution in isolated sites, in the Algerian desert; wind and solar potentials are considerably perfect for a combination in a renewable energy hybrid system to satisfy local village electrical load and minimize the storage requirements, which leads to reduce the cost of the installation. For a good sizing, it is essential to know accurately the solar potential of the installation area also wind potential at the same height where wind electric generators will be placed. In this work, we optimize a completely autonomous PV-wind hybrid system and show the techno-economical effects of the height of the wind turbine on the sizing of the hybrid system. We also compare the simulation results obtained from using wind speed measured data at 10 meters and 40 meters of height with the ones obtained from using wind speed extrapolation on HOMER software.

The potential of wind energy is very abundant but its utilization is still low. The effort to utilize wind energy is to utilize wind energy into electrical energy using wind turbines. Savonius wind turbines have a very simple shape and construction, are inexpensive, and can be used at low wind speeds. This research aims to determine the effect of the slot angle on the slotted blades configuration on the performance produced by Savonius wind turbines. Slot angle variations used are 5o ,10o , and 15o with slotted blades 30% at wind speeds of 2,23 m/s to 4,7 m/s using wind tunnel. The result showed that a small slot angle variation of 5o produced better wind turbine performance compared to a standard blade at low wind speeds and a low tip speed ratio.

Our planet gives us many mineral sources, but they have a big disadvantage. They are finite. Non-renewable energy sources are enough only for decades, exceptionally for centuries. Current generation is aware of the importance of using other energy sources, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. These energy sources are renewable. It means that they come from sources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale. One of these sources is wind energy. Use of this kind of energy source needs an initial investment, but it can reduce cost of running a household and other sectors. This article is about Savonius wind turbine and its use for the needs of public lighting.

This research discusses the fulfillment of the electricity needs of remote communities that are closely related to electrification ratios. Electrification ratios in some isolated areas and scattered islands in Indonesia are still very low. To date, most of the electricity needs in Indonesia is still supplied by Diesel Power Electricity Generator (PLTD) which uses diesel as its fuel. Therefore, it is necessary the utilization of renewable energy as one step to fulfill the electrical energy needs. This research studies about the utilization of wind energy with PLTB by using low speed wind turbine to fulfill the electricity needs of remote communities and scattered islands in Indonesia. NT1000W is the latest technology of low speed wind turbine that can operate at wind speed of 1 m/d up to 60 m/d appropriate to the wind conditions in Indonesia. Testing conducted in west Sumatera particularly in Padang city and Kapo-Kapo Island provide a feasibility of PLTB NT1000W technically and financially.

The global population is moving away from fossil fuel technologies due to their many disadvantages, such as air pollution, greenhouse gases emission, global warming, acid rain, health problems, and high costs. These disadvantages make fossil fuels unsustainable. As a result, renewable energy is becoming more attractive due to its steadily decreasing costs. Harnessing renewable energy promises to meet the present energy demands of the African continent. The enormous renewable energy potential available across the African continent remains largely untapped, especially for wind energy. However, marginal and fair wind speeds and power densities characterize African wind energy resulting in low and unsustainable power in many areas. This research develops a techno-economic model for wind energy cost analysis for a novel, Ferris wheel-based wind turbine. The model is used to techno-economically analyze the siting of wind turbine sites in low wind speed areas on the African continent. The wind turbine’s technical performance is characterized by calculating the annual energy production and the capacity factor using the wind Weibull probability distribution of the cities and theoretical power curve of the wind turbine. Its economic performance is evaluated using annualized financial return on investment, simple payback period, and levelized cost of electricity. The techno-economic model is validated for 21 African cities and shows that the Ferris wheel-based design is very competitive with four current, commercial wind turbines, as well as with other sources of energy. Hence, the new wind turbine may help provide the economical, clean, renewable energy that Africa needs.

Abstract Savonius turbines are one of the old and cost-effective turbines which extract the wind energy by the drag force. Nowadays, they use in urban areas to generate electricity due to their simple structure, ease of maintenance, and acceptable power output under a low wind speed. However, their efficiency is low and the improvement of their performance is necessary to increase the total power output. This paper compares four various blade profiles in a two-blade conventional Savonius wind turbine. The ratios of blade diameter to the blade depth of s/d = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1 are tested under different free-wind speeds of 3, 5, and 7 m/s and tip speed ratios (TSRs) in the range from 0.2 to 1.2. It is found that the profile of blades in a Savonius rotor plays a considerable role in power characteristics. Also, regardless of blades profile and free-wind speed, the maximum power coefficient develops in TSR = 0.8. In addition, increasing the free-wind speed enhances the rotor performance of all cases under consideration. Finally, it is revealed that the rotor with s/d = 0.5 provides maximum power coefficients in all free-wind speeds and TSR values among the rotors under consideration, whereas the rotor with s/d = 1 is the worth cases.

Many researchers proposed methods for improving the efficiency of small Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs). One of the methods developed to increase the efficiency of HAWTs and to overcome the theoretical Betz limit is the introduction of a converging – diverging casing around the turbine. To further improve the performance of the diffuser a flange is placed at its outlet, which smoothes the flow along the diffuser interior, allowing larger diffusion angles to be utilized. The purpose of this research work is the aerodynamic design and computational analysis of such an arrangement with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). First, a HAWT rotor rotating at 600 RPM was designed with the use of the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method. The three rotor blades are constructed using the NREL airfoil sections family S833, S834 and S835. The power coefficient of the rotor was optimised in a wind speed range of 5 – 10 m/s, with a maximum value of 0.45 for a wind speed of 7m/s. A full three-dimensional CFD analysis was carried out for the modeling of the flow around the rotor and through the flanged diffuser. The computational domain consisted of two regions with different frames of reference (a stationary and a rotating). The rotating frame rotates at 600 RPM and includes the rotor with the blades. All the simulations were performed using the commercial CFD software package ANSYS CFX. The Shear Stress Transport turbulence model was used for the simulations. Detailed flow analysis results are presented, dealing with the various investigated test cases, a) isolated turbine rotor, b) diffuser without the presence of the turbine, and c) the full turbine – diffuser arrangement for different flange heights and wind speeds. By varying the height of the flange and the wind speed, the effects of the above on the flow field and the power coefficient of the turbine were studied. The CFD resulting power coefficients are also compared and good agreement with existing in the literature experimental data was obtained. The results showed that there is a significant improvement in the performance of the wind turbine (by a factor from 2 to 5 on power coefficient at high blade tip speed ratio) and the proposed modification is particularly attractive for small wind turbines. The particular characteristics of the flow field, that are responsible for this improvement are identified and analysed in detail offering a better understanding of the physical processes involved.
