The present of chlorophyll is not expected in the isolation process of plant active constituent. Electrocoagulation is a potential dechlorophyllation method. This research aims to know the effectivity of electrocoagulation in the dechlorophyllation process of Cosmos caudatus Kunth., Morinda citrifolia, and Mangifera indica L. leaves methanolic extract as well as the effect to the total phenolic content. Electrocoagulation are performed using copper, silver, aluminum and iron plates as the electrode. Dechlorophyllation by extraction using n-hexane is performed as reference. The % absorbance of chlorophyll and % of total phenolic content of dechlorophyllated samples are measured spectrophotometrically. Electrocoagulation process reduces % absorbance of chlorophyll in Cosmos caudatus Kunth., Morinda citrifolia, and Mangifera indica L. leaves methanolic extract. The more the duration of electrocoagulaton process the lower the % absorbance of chlorophyll obtained. % absorbance of chlorophyll of the electrocoagulated extract according to paired t-test (P=0.95) are significantly different with the previous. One way ANOVA continued with LSD (P=0.95) shows that the % absorbance of chlorophyll from the electrocoagulated extract are significantly different with those extracted with n-hexane. Electrocoagulation process reduces total phenolic content along with duration of electrocoagulation.

Daun Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus K.) memiliki kandungan senyawa fenolik dan aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi. Senyawa fenolik telah diketahui sensitif terhadap cahaya, oksigen dan panas. Enkapsulasi dapat melindungi senyawa fenolik dalam ekstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh rasio bahan inti:bahan penyalut (1:10 dan 1: 20) dan suhu inlet spray dryer (125, 150 dan 175oC) terhadap karakteristik mikrokapsul. Pada penelitian tahap pendahuluan, daun kenikir diekstraksi menggunakan pelarut etanol, kemudian ekstrak yang diperoleh dianalisis aktivitas antioksidan dan total fenolik. Pada tahap selanjutnya ekstrak dienkapsulasi dan mikrokapsul yang diperoleh dianalisis powder recovery, kandungan total fenolik, effisiensi enkapsulasi, aktivitas antioksidan dan ukuran partikel. Rasio bahan inti:bahan penyalutdansuhu inlet spray dryer mempengaruhi powder recovery, total fenolik, effisiensi enkapsulasi, aktivitas antioksidan dan ukuran partikel mikrokapsul. Perlakuan dengan rasio bahan inti:bahan penyalut1:20 dan suhu inlet spray dryer 125oC menghasilkan mikrokapsul dengan powder recovery 59,87%, total fenol 24,644 mgGAE/g sampel, efisiensi enkapsulasi 98,820%, aktivitas antioksidan (IC50) 1711,804 ppm dan ukuran partikel 1,55 µm.Microencapsulation Of Phenolic Compounds From Cosmos caudatus K. Leaves ExtractCosmos caudatus K. leaves are high in total phenolic content and have high antioxidant activity. Phenolic compounds are sensitive to light, oxygen, and heat. Encapsulation process can protect the phenolic compounds of extract. This research was aimed to study the effect of core to coating ratio (1:10 and 1:20) and spray drying inlet temperature (125, 150, and 175°C) towards the characteristics of microcapsules. In preliminary stage, Cosmos caudatus K. leaves were extracted with ethanol. The extract was analyzed for antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. In the main stage, the extract were encapsulated. The microcapsules were analyzed for powder recovery, total phenolic content, encapsulation efficiency, antioxidant activity, and particle size. Core to coating ratio and inlet temperature affected the powder recovery, total phenolic content, encapsulation efficiency, antioxidant activity, and particle size of microcapsules. Microcapsules with core to coating ratio 1:20 and inlet temperature 125°C gave the best result with powder recovery 59.87%, total phenolic content 24.644 mg GAE/g sample, encapsulation efficiency 98.820%, IC50 1711.804 ppm, and particle size 1.55 μm.                      •

Abstract Cosmos caudatus (C. caudatus) is one of the common medicinal plants and among the valuable plants that are high in bioactive compounds such as phenolics. In this study, an ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method was used to optimise the extraction of bioactive compounds from C. caudatus leaves using response surface methodology (RSM) and employing a Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD). The extraction efficiency of UAE under the optimal extraction conditions was compared with the Soxhlet method. Also, an anti-microbial analysis against two human pathogenic bacteria; Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) was also evaluated. The effect of the extraction conditions was studied and optimised such as the solid-liquid ratio (10 to 30 g/ml), particle size (180 to 850 µm) and extraction time (20 to 30 min). Quercitrin and total phenolic content (TPC) were the selected response variables in this study. Based on the ANOVA analysis, the response surface model to predict the optimum yield of quercitrin and TPC was adequate with a high R-square value corresponding to 0.9930 and 0.9962. The optimal UAE conditions were 1:28 (g/mL), by using a particle size of 485 µm and an extraction time of 30 min, respectively. Remarkably, UAE reduced the extraction time and solvent volume, with the maximal recovery of bioactive compounds at a high antioxidant activity as compared with that of the Soxhlet method. The plant extract also exhibited potential microbial agents. Due to the above findings, UAE can be used to enrich quercitrin and total phenolic content from C. caudatus leaves. It also opens the possibility of plant extract to be used as an affordable component in many applications such as food formulations and anti-microbial agents.

Carissa edulis is a plant used in the management of oxidative stress and inflammatory related disorders such as malaria, rheumatism inflammation, and cardiovascular diseases. The present study evaluates the total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP), and the bioactive compounds present in the various extracts of C. edulis (HEC, MEC, AEC, and PC). An HPLC analysis determined the different compounds present in the extracts. High concentration of total phenolic content was observed in aqueous and methanolic extracts more than in the hydroethanolic extract though not significantly different. Flavonoids were higher in the hydroethanolic and methanolic extracts, respectively, with 14.84 mg RE/g extract and 12.02 mg RE/g extract. Tannins were also found in large amounts in the same two extracts with 26.76 mg TAE/g extract and 34.67 mg TEE/g extract. The percentage radical scavenging activity DPPH ranged between 58.63% and 94.67% for aqueous extract and for ABTS between 51.39% and 94.12% for the methanolic extract. The highest FRAP was obtained in the methanolic extract (6.73 g AAE/100 g extract). HPLC analysis revealed the presence of quercetin, rutin, and gallic acid in the different extracts. C. edulis represents a potential source of bioactive components with antioxidant capacity.

<p class="Default"><strong>Objective: </strong>The present work was aimed to investigate the <em>in vitro </em>antioxidant and anti-cancer activities of methanolic extract of <em>Stephania elegans</em>, an unexplored species from <em>Menispermaceae</em> family.</p><p class="Default"><strong>Methods: </strong>The methanolic extract of <em>S. elegans </em>tubers was prepared and phytochemical screening and total phenolic content were analyzed by using standard methods. <em>In </em><em>vitro,</em><em> </em>antioxidant potential of methanolic extract was determined by 2-2’-azinobis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell line, Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 type (MCF-7) was evaluated by 3-(4, 5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay.</p><p class="Default"><strong>Results: </strong>Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, and saponins in the methanolic extract of <em>S. elegans </em>tubers. The total phenolic content in the methanolic extract was 23.0±0.06 mg GAE/g (dry mass). As revealed by ABTS assay, the methanolic extract of plant tubers showed significant radical scavenging activity (IC<sub>50</sub> 41.66±0.015 μg/ml). The reducing power activity of the extract increased with the concentration of the extract. MTT assay indicated that <em>S. elegans </em>has potent cytotoxic activity towards MCF-7 cells (IC<sub>50 </sub>158.7±0.13 μg/ml).</p><p class="Default"><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This is the first study demonstrating the antioxidant and anticancer capabilities of the methanolic extract of <em>S. elegans</em>. This study also provides a significant basis for further isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from <em>S. elegans</em>.</p>

Abstract Background Owing to the side effects of synthetic medicine and less effectiveness against different syndromes, the researchers have focused on phytotherapy to overcome these problems. The purpose of this project was to study the in vitro phytochemical, cytotoxic, total phenolic, antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of the methanol extract of the rhizome of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers and its n-hexane, chloroform and aqueous fractions. Thereafter, to conduct in vivo evaluation of the effective extract for its antidiabetic and antioxidant characteristics. Methods Cytotoxic, total phenolic content and antidiabetic properties were ascertained by brine shrimps lethality, Folin- Ciocalteu reagent and alpha-amylase inhibition assays respectively while antioxidant activities were investigated through DPPH, ABTS and H2O2 assays. The methanolic extract was assessed in vivo for its antidiabetic and antioxidant activities by using Wistar albino rats. Results The phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract and its unlike fractions revealed the availability of alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, terpenes, steroids, carbohydrate and proteins while lack of saponins and gums in methanolic extract. Steroids and carbohydrates were only present in aqueous and chloroform fraction respectively while both fractions contained proteins and alkaloids. Cardiac glycosides and flavonoids were absent in aqueous and chloroform fractions respectively. The highest brine shrimps lethality (70.5 ± 1.2), total phenolic content (28.30 ± 1.3 mg GAE/g), free radicals scavenging potential i.e. DPPH (40.02%), ABTS (40.48%) and H2O2 (50.85%) and alpha amylase inhibition (61.87%) was shown by the methanolic extract. The in vivo results did not disclose any sign of acute toxicity. The diabetic control showed a noteworthy (P < 0.05) decline in weight, HDL and glutathione and a raised level of bilirubin, blood glucose, urea, creatinine, triglyceride, LDL, VLDL, ALT, ALP, AST, SOD, catalase. The mentioned alterations were restored considerably (P < 0.05) by treatment of diabetic rats with methanolic extract of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers (150 and 300 mg/kg b.w.). Conclusion It is concluded that the extract of rhizomes of Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers is an effective fount of antioxidant and anti-diabetic compounds. Further analysis is needed to sharpen its pharmacological activities.

Abstract Dried slightly sticky mango sheets is healthy sweet snack, having slightly chewy texture. The objective of this work was to study the effect of drying temperatures (60, 70 and 80 °C) on the drying characteristics, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays) and specific energy consumption of the dried slightly sticky mango sheets. The experimental results showed that the times required to reach the desired final moisture content were 230, 150 and 120 min when drying was performed at the temperatures of 60, 70 and 80 °C, respectively. The total specific energy consumption (SECtotal) values of the drying at 70 and 80 °C were lower than that at 60 °C. However, the TPC and the antioxidant activities assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays were not significantly different amongst the samples dried at different temperatures.

Aspidopterys indica (Willd.)W.Theob is endemic plant to Peninsular India belonging to family Malpighiaceae commonly known as  Chuttakulaa-tigga. The study aims to explore Pharmacognostic, Phytochemical evaluation, Total Phenolic, Flavonoid Content and Antioxidant Activities.The Pharmacognostic study comprises of Ultrasonic extraction, microscopy of Leaf and stem, fluorescence investigation, ash values, extractive values, Loss on drying, foaming index, crude fiber content, total phenolic and flavonoid content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Nitric oxide scavenging activities were assessed.The leaf shows presence of paracytic stomata, T shaped trichomes, Stem shows presence of vessels and pith. The physicochemical characters assessed as Total Ash value 10%, Water insoluble ash 0.5%, acid insoluble ash 8.5%, sulphated ash 4.2%, alcoholic extractive value 16.8%, water soluble extractive value 17.6%, chloroform extractive value 0.8%, Loss on drying 3.36%, Foaming index is <100, crude fiber content is 2.4%, phytoconstituents like tannins, flavonoids, phytosterols and alkaloids, carbohydrates are available in methanol, aqueous, chloroform extracts. Total phenolic content turned greatest in methanolic extract (90.69±2.86 mg GAE/g), Aqueous extract showed maximum total flavonoid content (109.89±0.33mg of QE/g). Methanolic extract indicated most intense 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging action IC50(134.97±8.37) whereas aqueous extract is potent to exclude nitrile radical IC50108.00±4.18). Total phenolic content - DPPH scavenging assay are positively correlated. The microscopical, physicochemical parameters are valuable to authenticate the identification and purity of the drug. A.indica is a perspective source of antioxidants.
