Abstract In this study, computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed on a three-dimensional model of a Libellulidae wing to determine aerodynamic performance in gliding flight. The wing is comprised of various corrugated features alongside the spanwise and chordwise directions, as well as twist. The detailed features of real 3D dragonfly wing models, including all the corrugations through both span and chord, have not been considered in the past for a detailed aerodynamic analysis. The simulations were conducted by solving the Navier-Stokes equations to demonstrate gliding performance over a range of angles of attack at low Reynolds numbers. The numerical model was validated against experimental data obtained from a fabricated corrugated wing model using particle image velocimetry. The numerical results demonstrate that bio-inspired wings with corrugations compared to flat profile wings generate more lift with lower drag, trapping the vortices in the valleys of wing corrugation leading to delayed flow separation and delayed stall. The experimental and numerical results demonstrate that the methodology presented in this study can be used to measure bio-inspired 3D wing flow characteristics, including the influence of complex corrugations on aerodynamic performance. These findings contribute to the advancement of knowledge required for designing an optimized bioinspired micro air vehicle.

Abstract The effect of a simulated glaze ice accretion on the flow field of a three-dimensional wing is studied experimentally. A PC-based data acquisition and reduction system was used with a four-beam two-color fiber-optic laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) to map the flow field along three spanwise cuts on the model. Results of the LDV measurements on the upper surface of the finite wing model without the simulated glaze ice accretion are presented for α = 0 degrees at Reynolds number of 1.5 million. Measurements on the centerline of the clean model compared favorably with theory.

Theoretical and an experimental research results of the disturbances development in a swept wing boundary layer are presented at Mach number М = 2. In experiments development of natural and small amplitude controllable disturbances downstream was studied. Experiments were carried out on a swept wing model with a lenticular profile at a zero attack angle. The swept angle of a leading edge was 40°. Wave parameters of moving disturbances were determined. In frames of the linear theory and an approach of the local self-similar mean flow the stability of a compressible three-dimensional boundary layer is studied. Good agreement of the theory with experimental results for transversal scales of unstable vertices of the secondary flow was obtained. However the calculated amplification rates differ from measured values considerably. This disagreement is explained by the nonlinear processes observed in experiment

There is a force peak at the beginning of each stroke during the insect flight, this force peak contributes a lot to the total aerodynamic force. To build a man made insect inspired man-made micro aero vehicle, this force need to be considered in the aero force model, and this model should as simple as possible in order to be used in feedback real-time control. Here we presented a simplified model to take the medium added mass effect of the wing into account. Simulated results show a high force peak at the beginning of each stroke and are quite similar to the measured forces on the physical wing model which were carried out by Dickinson et.al.
