The aim of this paper is to present an application of high-order numerical analysis methods to a simulation system that models the movement of a cylindrical-shaped object (mine, projectile, etc.) in a marine environment and in general in fluids with important applications in Naval operations. More specifically, an alternative methodology is proposed for the dynamics of the Navy’s three-dimensional mine impact burial prediction model, Impact35/vortex, based on the Dormand–Prince Runge–Kutta fifth-order and the singly diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta fifth-order methods. The main aim is to improve the time efficiency of the system, while keeping the deviation levels of the final results, derived from the standard and the proposed methodology, low.

In this technical brief, we focus on solving trajectory optimization problems that have nonlinear system dynamics and that include high-order derivatives in the objective function. This type of problem comes up in robotics—for example, when computing minimum-snap reference trajectories for a quadrotor or computing minimum-jerk trajectories for a robot arm. DirCol5i is a transcription method that is specialized for solving this type of problem. It uses the fifth-order splines and analytic differentiation to compute higher-derivatives, rather than using a chain-integrator as would be required by traditional methods. We compare DirCol5i to traditional transcription methods. Although it is slower for some simple optimization problems, when solving problems with high-order derivatives DirCol5i is faster, more numerically robust, and does not require setting up a chain integrator.

In this paper, we discuss high-order finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes, coupled with total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge–Kutta (RK) temporal integration, for solving the semilinear hyperbolic system of a correlated random walk model describing movement of animals and cells in biology. Since the solutions to this system are non-negative, we discuss a positivity-preserving limiter without compromising accuracy. Analysis is performed to justify the maintenance of third-order spatial/temporal accuracy when the limiters are applied to a third-order finite difference scheme and third-order TVD-RK time discretization for solving this model. Numerical results are also provided to demonstrate these methods up to fifth-order accuracy.

AbstractThree high order shock-capturing schemes are compared for large eddy simulations (LES) of temporally evolving mixing layers for different convective Mach numbers ranging from the quasi-incompressible regime to highly compressible supersonic regime. The considered high order schemes are fifth-order WENO (WENO5), seventh-order WENO (WENO7) and the associated eighth-order central spatial base scheme with the dissipative portion of WENO7 as a nonlinear post-processing filter step (WENO7fi). This high order nonlinear filter method of Yee & Sjögreen is designed for accurate and efficient simulations of shock-free compressible turbulence, turbulence with shocklets and turbulence with strong shocks with minimum tuning of scheme parameters. The LES results by WENO7fi using the same scheme parameter agree well with experimental results compiled by Barone et al., and published direct numerical simulations (DNS) work of Rogers & Moser and Pantano & Sarkar, whereas results by WENO5 and WENO7 compare poorly with experimental data and DNS computations.

AbstractIn this study, a numerical framework of the high order well-balanced weighted compact nonlinear (WCN) schemes is proposed for the shallow water equations based on the work in [S. Zhang, S. Jiang, C.-W Shu, J. Comput. Phys. 227 (2008) 7294-7321]. We employ a special splitting technique for the source term proposed in [Y. Xing, C.-W Shu, J. Comput. Phys. 208 (2005) 206-227] to maintain the exact C-property, which can be proved theoretically. In the meantime, the genuine high order accuracy of the numerical scheme can be observed successfully, and small perturbation of the stationary state can be resolved and evolved well. In order to capture the strong discontinuities and large gradients, the fifth-order upwind weighted nonlinear interpolations together with the fourth/sixth order cell-centered compact scheme are used to construct different WCN schemes. In addition, the local characteristic projections are considered to further restrain the potential numerical oscillations. A variety of representative one- and two-dimensional examples are tested to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed schemes.
