Bioactive forages, such as birdsfoot trefoil, may serve as an alternative to anthelmintic drugs in pastured dairy heifers. Differences in parasite burden and growth were examined between eight treatment heifers fed a birdsfoot trefoil mixture and nine control heifer fed alfalfa silage 45-min per day for 12 wk. A significant 3.8- to 9.4-fold reduction in fecal egg counts was observed for treatment heifers at weeks 5, 9, 11 and 12. No treatment effect was found for weight gain. Our results suggest that birdsfoot trefoil may reduce parasite fecal egg counts in pastured dairy heifers without detrimental impact on growth.

Hedysarum alpinum L. var. americanum Michx. (American hedysarum) is indigenous to parts of Saskatchewan. Plants grown from seeds collected at five locations in central Saskatchewan were transplanted into a nursery at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and a study of the nutritive value of individual plants was undertaken to determine the potential value of American hedysarum as a forage legume for the northern Canadian prairies. Leaves and stems (analyzed separately) showed marked differences in chemical composition. However, they did not differ in the in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD). American hedysarum plants had a much higher tannin content than alfalfa or birdsfoot trefoil plants grown at the same location. This may account for the relatively low OMD of this species. The protein and fiber fractions (of H. alpinum) compared favorably with those of alfalfa. Improvement by breeding for reduced tannin content would be necessary before American hedysarum would be acceptable as a forage crop.Key words: Hedysarum alpinum L. var. americanum Michx., American hedysarum, forage, tannin, in vitro digestibility, early growth

In recent years, the number of pasture species and cultivars commercially available to farmers in New Zealand has increased significantly. Reasons for this include increased commercial activity in the development and supply of proprietary cultivars, and more specialisation in New Zealand's pastoral agriculture. In particular, pasture cultivars are increasingly marketed as proprietary products with associated technical support. This year there are 109 certified cultivars available, belonging to 23 grass, legume and herb species. As a result, farmers are now able to develop improved pasture feed supply, but they are somewhat confused about pasture species and cultivars, and this frustrates their aims to produce high quality animal products from productive pastures. Accordingly, the herbage seeds industry needs to work from a clear reference list, to avoid any confusion when supplying farmers and overseas clients with their seed requirements. Our list of pasture species, types and cultivars available within New Zealand aims to be that reference. A characteristic property of legumes is the formation of hard-stone seeds. To use such seeds for sowing, it is necessary to carry out measures to increase their seeding indicators. The article provides an overview of methods of pre-sowing preparation of seeds, priming (Seed Priming). The harvest of Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) can contain up to 90% or more hard-stone seeds. Mechanical priming of hard-stone seeds of Birdsfoot trefoil increases their germination energy and field germination.

The data on assessment the preservative action of new enzymatic multisystem in combination with bacterial silage additive Silzak at alfalfa ensiling are presented in this study. It is known that alfalfa is a nonensiling legume grass because of excess moisture, sugar deficit and high content of crude protein. The experiments on alfalfa ensiling were conducted with application the enzymatic multisystem FM-1 under laboratory and research-and-production conditions. The multisystem was developed by the specialists of science-and-technical centre «Lecbiotech» in cooperation with scientists of Williams Fodder Research Institute. The optimal dose of FM-1 application and its preservative effectiveness in comparison with chemical conservant were determined in technological experiments. Obtained silage was evaluated on basic parameters: nutrients and organic acids content, ammonia, active acidity. The influence of the tested biological additive on the nutrients digestibility and energy value of alfalfa silage was estimated in experiments with hog lambs. Total results have shown the efficiency of the new development. Lucerne silage, prepared with application of mixture FM-1 and Silzak, was characterized by the better parameters of nutrients digestibility and energy value than at using a chemical conservant AIV 3 plus. The optimal dose of enzymatic multisystem application, as 90 gram per ton of fresh plant mass, was determined in the series of experiments.

The importance of sustainable development has started to be acknowledged in Romania as well, once the various pollution sources and the restrictions affecting industrial and agricultural pollution were identified, from an economic and ecological standpoint. Sustainable development represents the need of raising awareness about environmental protection and educating people, and this aspect is reflected by the evolution of communal policies in recent years, policies marked by a shift from an approach based on constraints and sanctions to a higher level of flexibility, based on incentives. The purpose of this paper is to make a recommendation for improving existing policy by making an assessment of economic incentives in order to stimulate farmers to adopt sustainable farming systems of a viable, sustainable agriculture, capable to apply the newest technologies and lead to profit and efficiency, to the economical and organizational consolidation. To analyse the effects of different zone packages on income of farmers and the environment a linear programming model is developed for a typical, 192 ha mixed farm in the Iasi region plain pilot area. The major activities of the farm is keeping dairy cattle, growing fodder (grass, alfalfa, silage maize) and cash crops (winter wheat and maize).
