Private accommodation capacities are a growing segment of the lodging industry in Croatia. In private accommodation capacities 2,684 million tourists were registered in 2010, there were 19,4 million overnight stays, which makes 25% of total arrivals and 34% of total overnights. Although studies have been made on economic impact of tourism on a destination (at the national level), the issues of the impact of private accommodation haven't been given due attention. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to estimate the importance of private accommodation in development of tourist destination on regional level through consumption of tourists accommodated in private capacities, as well as to confirm that tourism receipts realised in private capacities have a positive impact on regional economic development.

Morocco is one of the countries investing more and more in Renewable Energy (RE) technologies to meet the growing demand for energy and ensure the security of supply in this sector. The number of solar projects planned and implemented, as well as solar thermal projects in the form of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) installations is steadily increasing. Many of these installations are designed as large utility systems. In order to provide strong evidence on local, regional and even national impacts, this article examines the impacts of large-scale renewable energy projects on territorial development, based on a case study of the NOOR 1 (Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)) project in Ouarzazate, Morocco. The data collected during this study, conducted through semi-structured interviews with experts, stakeholders, local community representatives and combined with an analysis of documents provided by the NOOR 1 project managers, investors and consulting firms specialized in the field of Renewable Energy, provide detailed evidence on the type and magnitude of impacts on the economic development of the Moroccan southern region where the NOOR 1 plant is located. The data collected is analyzed using NVIVO software. The study results in a consolidated list of many impacts with varying levels of significance for different stakeholder groups, including farmers, youth, women, community representatives and small and medium firms owners. It should be noted that the importance of analyzing the economic impact of large infrastructure projects is widely recognized, but so far, there is little published in the academic and professional literature on the potential impacts of these projects at the local level. Even less information is available on the local impacts of large-scale project implementation in Morocco. While many macroeconomic studies have fed the recent surge in investment in RE projects with the promise of multiple social, economic, environmental, and even geopolitical benefits at the macro level, public debates and discussions have raised considerable doubts. The question of whether these promises would also leave their marks at the local level has also arisen. Despite these uncertainties, very few academics and practitioners have conducted research to empirically develop a good understanding of the impact of RE projects at the local level. To fill this research gap, the economic impact analysis of NOOR 1 provides a detailed empirical overview, which allows a better understanding of the effects that the infrastructure developments of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants can have on the economic environment in which they are located.

This paper examined the impact of the Federal government of Nigeria’s tax amnesty programme tagged “Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) on tax administration in Nigeria.  This task is premised on the global reality of governments facing challenges funding developmental projects and other government paraphernalia due to paucity of funds as a result of tax evasions and tax avoidances. In most developing countries such as Nigeria, this tax evasions and avoidances have serious repercussion on the economic growth and development strides of the nation. To avert this menace, the federal government of Nigeria in line with some other countries of the world, created a tax amnesty window called Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Schemes (VAIDS) to beat tax defaulters at their game and boost revenue generation towards generating the needed funds for developmental projects. For the purpose of this examination, data were generated through the secondary sources of data collection and analyzed with the content analysis. From the analysis, the paper found among others that VAIDS has impacted positively on revenue generation by expanding taxpayer’s data base and also enhanced the identification of tax defaulters. However, poor adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) and the inadequate publicity among others are the constraining factors to VAIDS achievement of its US$1bn target. Based on the findings, the paper recommends among others, proper institutionalization of ICT in data management for tax registration, assessment and collection processes and enforcing the penalties associated with not complying with VAIDS mercy window.

AbstractWe examine the impact of economic development and the role of political alignment on the fatalities and damages due to floods using state-level panel data for 19 Indian states over the period 1980–2011. The empirical results confirm that economic development leads to a decline in flood fatalities and damages due to floods across Indian states. This study also examines the role of politics in the prevention of flood fatalities. We find that both state election years and political alignment influence the extent of flood fatalities. The results suggest that not only economic development but also healthy political coordination between the central government and the states is essential to mitigate the impact of floods.
