This article explores various reasons for the lack of school library services in Norwegian primary schools. The basic thesis is that libraries and primary schools have developed differently despite sharing common origins from the European Age of Enlightenment. Libraries and library work can be seen as belonging to a masculine metaphor, primary schools and teaching can be seen as belonging to a feminine metaphor. These metaphors reflect traditions and attitudes that affect everything from basic democratic ideologies to ways in which we relate to classroom space and library space, as well as the ways in which teachers and librarians organize and advocate for working conditions. This causes conflicts in defining the role of the teacher-librarian and the school library in Norwegian primary schools.

The literature on children's information seeking behavior is reviewed and integrated into the perspective of school library services. Discussion on the different models of information seeking is presented. Focuses on children's information seeking behavior in the electronic environment. Outlines issues related to children's access and barriers to information. An analysis of research methodology used is provided. Offers suggestions on the future research direction with emphasis on the Malaysian school libraries environment.

This paper reviews existing literature on how school library services could lead to better basic educational system in Nigeria. Extent literature reviewed that there is poor state of library services to pre-primary, primary and post primary education institutions in Nigeria, providing learning resources is the primary and fundamental role of the school library. Education cannot be achieved without resources that will enhance learning activities. The study concluded that library resources and services are grossly inadequate in many primary and post primary schools in Nigeria and several factors have been attributed to this anomaly in our education system. However the study therefore recommends that the school library authorities should improve in creating more awareness on library services and programmes; the library management in collaboration with the school authorities should provide more fund to run the library effectively; the school management authorities should provide a befitting and well equipped building for the library.

This article presents data on the impacts and changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on librarianship within the context of rural school libraries. We understand the work in libraries as a special activity that is only valued if contextualized. Thus, we question the role of the library and the librarian practices in the current pandemic scenario with the purpose of updating the debate on librarianship in rural schools. To this end, we conducted a bibliographic and exploratory field research mediated by the application of a questionnaire. We conclude by highlighting the precarious situation that prevents actions and activities to encourage reading and the dissemination of pedagogical resources to support school and school-community libraries.

Since 2003, Room to Read, an international education NGO, has been working in India to help foster a culture of reading in schools through the establishment of over 1500 school libraries. This paper outlines the evolution Room to Read’s Reading Room program in India as an example of how school library programs can address the reading challenges of children in developing countries. The focus of the paper is on Room to Read India’s Primary Reading Enhancement Program (PREP), which will be piloted in the Reading Room program in 2008. The goal of PREP is to have a significant impact on the way reading is taught in primary schools in India. Details are provided on the approach, materials, activities, parent and community participation, government participation, and student assessments that make up the core components of the PREP design.

This paper provides a study of the school library programs sponsored by the Evergreen Education Foundation (EEF) and identifies the vital role of school libraries in improving students’ information quality. Based on analyzes Strategies for building literacy skills in the library of Tianzhu No.1 High School, the study confirmed the program developed reading and literacy skills among students. As EEF programs continue to expand into other locations in China, it is the authors’ hope that this study may provide useful information and analysis based upon which decisions about future programs can be made. It is also their hope that this study provides impetus for more studies on the rural library programs in other areas of China or programs in other underdeveloped regions of the world.

In most countries, the introduction of computer technology in schools has seen the role of school libraries transformed. Adoption of new technologies are now seen to be enhancing school libraries’ ability to perform their mission, vision and role, that is, providing learners access to a wide range of reading material to enable them to acquire knowledge as well as ability to read books online. This paper will address the impact computer technology is having on rural school learners at Katsande Primary School. Library Media Center 2000 focuses on school library services, technology, training and advocacy—restructuring information and meeting learning needs: linguistic, cultural, multimedia. Over the last three years, San Francisco library media teachers have engaged in a process of professional development opportunities, networking and communication. In a district that has experienced massive cutbacks in library media services, library media teachers have encouraged and supported each other while learning to use new technologies, and sharing areas of expertise and resources.

International guidelines for school libraries and school librarians exist. However, the role of professional library associations in school librarian education has been largely overlooked. This exploratory study examines the role of professional library associations in Brazil, Honduras, Nepal, and the United States (specifically California) relative to school librarian pre-service education and in-service professional development. The associations are analyzed in light of communities of practice and the contingency theory of socialization. The findings demonstrate how professional library associations provide culturally relevant professional development that melds professional expertise and socialization.

This paper describes the development of two experimental school library information systems for Malaysian schools. The results of a user study, conducted using different sets of questionnaire for both types of schools indicated that students in general, borrowed books from the library by browsing the shelves. Students seldom used the catalogue card for searching and only a small percentage reported that they were able to find the books successfully using the catalogue card. Based on the findings, a conceptual model of the prototype automated catalogue was developed - Virtual Library for use in primary schools, and ELIS for secondary schools. Both systems are divided into two main modules, the Administrator and the User module. User acceptance test showed that the majority of students found the systems user friendly. Students were also successful in the search tasks given. A high majority described the graphical user interface to be attractive and simple. This indicates the feasibility of using the systems for school libraries in Malaysia.

What is the role of the school library in creating a compassionate school culture? How can we forge a stronger connection between empathy and literacy?  Why are libraries the best place to teach the communication skills that facilitate empathy?  Inspired by recent research proving the connection between literacy and empathy (Castano and Comer 2013), we decided to make empathy a priority in our library services. Our two primary goals were to 1) create literacy-based programs that would encourage empathy 2) to encourage the exhibition of empathetic behaviors by training a library volunteer corps.   We designed simple activities to encourage both empathy and literacy simultaneously. Our anecdotal survey positively reflected that students and staff noticed a more caring, empathetic library environment.
