The aim of this study was to examine the strength of scientific evidence, reproducibility and replicability of the 29 essays of the winners of the Bigelow contest.Six essays (20.5%) were included in the category with the high strength of scientific evidence. Four essays (14%) were included in the category with medium strength of scientific evidence and the remaining 19 essays (65.5%) in the category with low strength of scientific evidence. The overall agreement between our strength of scientific evidence categories and the Bigelow ones, was only 48.8%, sufficient to demonstrate a clear difference between our scientific criteria and those adopted by the judges of the Bigelow contest.The essays that obtained the highest strength of scientific evidence level were related to near-death experiences and mental mediumship.For other phenomena, more studies with refined experimental designs are necessary to increase the evidence of the survival of human consciousness.

Fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites have mechanical properties highly dependent on directions, possessing high strength and fatigue resistance in fiber longitudinal direction achieved by weak interface bonding. However, the disadvantage of weak interface combination is the reduction of transversal performances. In this article, tensile and fatigue properties of carbon fiber-reinforced 5056 aluminum alloy matrix (Cf/5056Al) composite under the condition of medium-strength interface combination are carried out. The fatigue damage mechanisms of Cf/5056Al composite under tension–tension and tension–compression loads are not the same, but the fatigue life curves are close, which may be the result of the medium-strength interface combination.

Abstract Background This study evaluated the impact of multifaceted NPS MedicineWise programs conducted in 2009 and 2015 that targeted general practitioners (GPs) to reduce unnecessary prescribing of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Methods Time series analyses of the dispensing rates of concessional PPI scripts between January 2006 and June 2016 using the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) databases in Australia. Participants were GPs with dispensed PPI prescriptions to concessional patients between January 2006 and June 2016. The interventions were National NPS MedicineWise PPI educational programs in 2009 and 2015 delivered to all practising GPs in Australia. The 2015 intervention coincided with the release of Choosing Wisely Australia recommendations from the RACGP. Outcome measures included monthly dispensing rates of standard and low strength PPIs prescribed by GPs among concessional patients in Australia. Results Following the 2009 NPS MedicineWise program we observed a 6.7% reduction in the expected dispensing rate of standard strength PPIs among concessional patients between January 2006 and March 2015, and a total 8.6% reduction by June 2016 following the launch of the 2015 program. We observed a significant increase of 5.6% in the expected dispensing rate of low strength PPIs among concessional patients between April 2009 and March 2015, and no significant change in trend following the 2015 program. Conclusions The NPS MedicineWise programs were associated with reductions in the dispensing rate of standard strength PPIs, and with an increase in the dispensing rate of low-strength PPIs by June 2016. Although the rate of high-strength PPI prescribing is declining, these formulations still constitute the majority of PPI use in Australia. Regular interventions to sustain and improve PPI management by GPs may be warranted.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Zr-Y alloy extruded bar with different heat treatment processes were investigated, including solution treatments of 400 oC, 450 oC and 500 oC for 3 hours followed by 170 oC×24h aging treatment, and solely aging treatments of 160 oC, 180 oC for 24hours without solution after extruding. By comparing the grain size, strength and elongation of the samples, the heat treatment processes for extruded products with high strength and with medium strength were recommended.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare effectiveness and safety of low-strength and high-strength direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) with warfarin in the Australian Veteran population.DesignSequential cohort study using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and propensity score matching. Initiators of high-strength (apixaban 5 mg, dabigatran 150 mg, rivaroxaban 20 mg) and low-strength DOACS (apixaban 2.5 mg, dabigatran 110 mg, rivaroxaban 15 mg) were compared with warfarin initiators.SettingAustralian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs claims database.Participants4836 patients who initiated oral anticoagulants (45.8%, 26.0% and 28.2% on low-strength, high-strength DOACs and warfarin, respectively) between August 2013 and March 2015. Mean age was 85, 75 and 83 years for low-strength, high-strength DOACs and warfarin initiators, respectively.Main outcome measuresOne-year risk of hospitalisation for ischaemic stroke, any bleeding event or haemorrhagic stroke. Secondary outcomes were 1-year risk of hospitalisation for myocardial infarction and death.ResultsUsing the IPTW method, no difference in risk of ischaemic stroke or bleeding was found with low-strength DOACs compared with warfarin. As a class, no increased risk of myocardial infarction was found for low-strength DOACs, however, risk was elevated for apixaban (HR 2.25, 95% CI 1.23 to 4.13). For high-strength DOACs, no difference was found for ischaemic stroke compared with warfarin, however, there was a significant reduction in risk of bleeding events (HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.44 to 0.89) and death (HR 0.40, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.58). Propensity score matching showed no difference in risk of ischaemic stroke or bleeding.ConclusionWe found that in the practice setting both DOAC formulations were similar to warfarin with regard to effectiveness and had no increased risk of bleeding.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the sulphate-reduction pathway in the anaerobic treatment of landfill leachate. The effects of several COD/SO4 ratios (keeping COD constant) and loadings on anaerobic filter performance were studied and compared with the results from anaerobic filters which followed the methanogenic pathway. Results indicated that the treatability of leachate by sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) was dependent upon the leachate strength. With high strength leachate (COD=15000 mg/L) from the Keele Valley Landfill, it was found that at lower COD/SO4 ratios (≤1.6) toxic conditions developed in the system that were more inhibitory to the SRB than to the methane producing bacteria (MPB). As the COD/SO4 ratio increased, methanogenesis predominated. No predominance of SRB occurred at any COD/SO4 ratio with high strength leachate. The highest COD removal achieved was about 70% of which 20% was accomplished by the SRB at a COD/SO4 ratio of 1.6 and an organic loading rate (OLR) of 4 kg COD/m3.d. With low strength leachate (COD=1500-3300 mg/L) from the Brock West Landfill, and a COD/SO4 ratio <1, SRB became predominant. In these anaerobic filters in which SRB were predominant, the SRB reduced the COD as well as the MPB could. Sulphide inhibition did not take place at any loading in units treating low strength leachate. Consequently, both SRB and MPB should function at COD/SO4 ratios between 1 and 3. About 60% COD removal was achieved at a loading of 2.8 kg COD/m3.d and a COD/SO4 ratio of 1.0. However at a loading of 6 kg COD/m3.d only 27% COD removal was achieved, all of it through the sulphate-reduction pathway. These OLR values are comparable to those applied in systems where methanogenesis was dominant. It was also observed that once the methanogens were established in the units, it was not possible to displace them completely. However, where methanogenesis had not been previously established, it was found that sulphate-reduction could be the sole pathway for COD removal. From this study, it can be concluded that there is no advantage to the sulphate-reduction pathway in the anaerobic treatment of landfill leachate. The other options for increasing the loadings, i.e. the use of high surface/volume filter media (to achieve higher biomass concentrations) or high rate systems are likely to be more successful.

The commercial 7xxx series Al alloys are based on medium strength Al-Zn-Mg and high strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu systems. The medium strength alloys are weldable, whilst the high strength alloys are nonweldable. On the other hand, the Cu-free, weldable alloys suffer from poor SCC resistance. It is the purpose of this article to provide quantitative data and microstructural analysis to demonstrate that small additions of either Ag or Sc to Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys bring about very significant improvement in SCC resistance and weldability, respectively. The improvement in SCC resistance of the Cu-bearing alloys due to over aging and retrogression and reaging (RRA) is further discussed in light of a similar improvement in the SCC resistance of these alloys, when peak aged, due to Ag and Sc additions.

The heavy metal contain in the industrial wastewater can cause a pollution towards the environment and human due to its toxicity. Therefore extensive studies were conducted for the heavy metal removal. This study was conducted under several conditions by varying pH, biosorbent dosage, initial wastewater concentration and contact time. The results revealed that optimum pH, for high strength synthetic wastewater was 8.0 meanwhile for low strength synthetic wastewater was 7.0. Both high and low strength synthetic wastewater was optimum at 30 minutes of contact time with 1.5g and 0.02g of bisorbent dosage respectively. Meanwhile, the optimum initial metal concentration for high and low strength synthetic wastewater was 400ppm and 1ppm respectively. The results had proven that watermelon rind is able to treat wastewater with high and low concentration of metal.
