This article intends to identify and to describe the unique structure and the managing style that owns primordial characteristics, that is giving significance to kinship, religion, and local Bugis cultural values, which made up the cultural system of PT. Hadji Kalla family business. Theoritically, this research was inspired from Weberian perspective on the ideal types of bureaucracy, that observes organizations (in this case is the family business) as one of the socio-cultural phenomena which is neutral and value-free, that is place aside its subjective aspects. The research was conducted in two locations, the head office and one of the branch offices using qualitative approach that relies on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The results of the research shows that the family business of PT. Hadji Kalla that has advanced into national level still prioritizes kinship, ethnicity, and religious aspects in the daily activities of the company. The value even take parts in providing the company’s colour to the urban societies in various districts where the company stands. This means that although the society has undergone transformations, it doesn’t mean that the primordial value, and the elements that exist outside of businesses (such as kinship, big men, religion, cultural values, and interest) do not influence the activities that are held in formal organizations. Therefore, the interventions of subjective aspects will always appear, followed with the application of the modern management system that is implemented by PT. Hadji Kalla company.

There is a dearth of methodological guidance on how to conduct participant observation in private spaces such as family homes. Yet, participant observations can provide deep and valuable data about family processes. This article draws on two ethnographic studies of family life in which researchers conduct in-depth interviews, recruit families, and ultimately enter the family as a quasi-stranger for daily observations lasting a fixed period (e.g., three weeks). We term this approach “intensive family observations.” Here, we provide concrete methodological advice for this method, beginning with guidelines for recruitment and gaining consent. We also discuss logistics of conducting family observation (e.g., scheduling, spatial positionality in the home, role in the field, among other issues). We elaborate on the key challenges, specifically issues of intrusion, power, and positionality. Last, we reflect on how this method provides opportunities for accurately capturing deeply intimate moments as well as unexpected insights.

Purpose The family business is one of the business entities that contribute to the economy of a country. Succession in the family business occupies a strategic position, especially in maintaining the company’s sustainability. The Chinese family business has unique characteristics in maintaining and growing its business with the cultural values that underlie how their business. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the cultural values of Chinese ethnic and their implications in the succession process in small family businesses in Bandung, Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This research uses a qualitative method with the in-depth interview method as a data collection technique. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling, while to test the validity of research data using a triangulation technique. A total of four small Chinese-owned family businesses participated as informants in this study. The study will identify the stage of succession process in the Chinese family business. Findings There are several stages identified in the succession planning of small Chinese-owned family business in Bandung which include succession antecedents, succession activities and desired outcomes. The results showed that small Chinese-owned family business in Bandung has not applied the rules and procedures in the succession process. Most of the Chinese family business in this research still holds Confucianism culture; they prioritize boys as business successors, who have a greater responsibility rather than successor with other gender. Practical implications Several implications are discussed. One of them is the Chinese family business holding cultural values in the process of family business succession. Originality/value This research is expected to provide theoretical and practical implications for academics and family companies with similar cases.

Rapid technological advancements have led to Smartphone revolution of becoming multifunctional personal devices. These smart phones are equipped with new features, including Internet access, cameras (pictures and videos) and MP3 players. The study examines the complex forces that influence and challenge the socio-cultural values among youth. It investigates the extent to which smart phones were used and their implications for youth in a society that is bounded within the Malay Islamic Monarchy concept. The research questions were explored through the use of qualitative research method, specifically, focus groups and in-depth interviews. The framework utilized to examine the data is the Uses & Gratifications theory. A number of significant findings signify firstly, the tendency for owning smart phone is influenced by the family. Parents gave smart phones to their children either as birthday gifts or after having performed well or passed their final Junior School Examination. Secondly, almost all of the respondents perceived smart phone as the most useful communication device as a mean to contact their friends and families. Thirdly, two important factors for smart phone ownership among youth include safety and emergency purposes. Finally, they also perceived smart phones as a status symbol.

This study investigates the professional experiences of female heirs in a variety of family businesses located in three states of the Brazilian Southeast. The aim is to analyze both how the family and business structures affect the daughters' visibility in managerial positions and the resulting gender relations. Twelve open-ended, in-depth interviews were conducted. The responses were analyzed, and pathways were classified according to the Gersick, Davis, Hampton, and Lansberg (1997) three-dimensional development model of family businesses. Three groups were formed to describe the daughters' experiences: invisible, professional, and anchor.

The culinary business in the city of Palembang is one of the family businesses that has been passed down for generations, the culinary business in recent years can create growth opportunities for employment and increase the ability of human resources. Management of many family businesses is controlled and operated by one member or several families and many family businesses have non-family members as employees. This study aims to determine the role of knowledge management in creating human resources who are ready to compete in the culinary industry in the city of Palembang. by analyzing the factors that must be considered such as the next generation development factors, information technology, and business development. This research uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and direct observation. The results of this study indicate that the culinary business in the family business is still carried out traditionally the application of technology is still limited so the need for the role of knowledge management in order to be able to identify knowledge can realize competitiveness and sustainability as a benchmark for the success of the family business especially the culinary business in the city of Palembang   Abstrak Bisnis  kuliner di kota Palembang merupakan salah satu bisnis keluarga yang sudah turun temurun,  bisnis kuliner tersebut dalam beberapa tahun ini dapat menciptakan peluang pertumbuhan bagi lapangan kerja dan peningkatan kemampuan sumber daya manusia. Manajemen bisnis keluarga banyak dikendalikan dan dioperasikan oleh  satu anggota atau beberapa keluarga dan banyak bisnis keluarga memiliki anggota non keluarga sebagai karyawan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran knowledge management dalam  menciptakan sumber daya manusia yang siap untuk berdaya saing  pada industri kuliner di kota Palembang. dengan menganalisis  faktor- faktor yang harus diperhatikan seperti faktor pengembangan generasi penerus, teknologi informasi,dan  pengembangan usaha. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi langsung. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bisnis kuliner dalam bisnis keluarga masih dilakukan tradisional penerapan teknologi masih terbatas sehingga perlu adanya peran knowledge management agar   mampu mengidentifikasi pengetahuan dapat mewujudkan daya saing dan berkelanjutan  sebagai  tolak ukur keberhasilan bisnis keluarga khususnya bisnis kuliner  di kota Palembang.

In the sociological analysis of the cultures of aikido and judo coaches, we intend to demonstrate the social profile, defined by the socio-professional category and the socio-cultural status of individuals, determined as choices and the intensity of professional aikido and judo practice. To deepen the object of study, we define three hypotheses and create an analysis model for its operationalization. Several social techniques were used: direct observation, participant observation, semi-direct interview and survey research. The universe consisted of 60 coaches, at a national level, having been executed in order to complete 6 interviews with privileged interlocutors. The results reveal that there is a homogeneity between the social groups that practice the two combat sports, although they find differences in habits and values, according to sex, age and level of education. The analysis of the information mobilized points to a differentiation in the social level, in the visibility, in the career opportunities, in the profile and in the sports under study. The data point to a differentiation in the level of involvement, especially the type of practice/conception, the conditions of access, the family influence, the intensity of the practice and the associative participation according to the social profile and the sports under analysis.

The aim of the paper is to identify the main strategic goals that are deemed as strategic by the owner/managers for the future growth of a family firm, and to assess how innovation ad internationalisation are included in such goals. By relying on 15 in-depth interviews with family firms’ key informants (i.e. family firms’ owners, managers and professionals), the study makes an original contribution that is significant and relevant both from a theoretical and a methodological perspective. In relation to the former, it provides a comprehensive review of the main family business goal setting models in order to identify the relevant categories used to classify the goals. Additionally, differently from extant research the study outlines the pivotal importance of innovation and internationalization as strategic goals for family firms’ growth. In relation to the latter, by relying on a narrative approach, the study provides a finer-grained understanding of how internationalization and innovation are conceived with respect to traditional characteristics of the family firms.

This article aims to contribute to the literature on family business (FBs), particularly from the perspective of commitment and influence of family on the FB internationalization regarding risk acceptance. Qualitative in nature, the study involved the use of a single longitudinal case study, based on in-depth interviews, storytelling and secondary data. Primary data were collected through semi-structured personal interviews with the company’s board chairman and vice-chairman, commercial director, European director and export manager; and secondary data were obtained using documental and scientific sources. It could be seen that family commitment and ownership influenced the internationalization process due to the proactivity of its European descendant founders, and particularly because in this company studied the process was initiated by a non-family member. However, family participation encourages risk acceptance, since the attachment to the family business creates an eagerness for growth. The findings corroborate the characteristics proposed by the Uppsala School, which claims that internationalization occurs in an unplanned, opportunistic manner, following sequential phases, through incremental learning and via the establishment of networks.

Family business has been the focus of several studies over the last two decades and its relevance has been supported by the interdisciplinary perspectives in the fields of management, entrepreneurship, economics, psychology, and sociology. Despite that, there is still insufficient knowledge about the key role of family influences in the business, namely the intergenerational management succession, its planning and effectiveness. According to a recent research focused on the entrepreneurial succession in Portugal (AEP, 2011), 50 percent of family businesses are not passed on to the second generation and only 20 percent reach the third generation. In fact, business succession planning has been identified as one of the most challenging steps in the life of the family firm, both in maintaining the competiveness of the business, and in overcoming intra/ inter family conflicts. Nonetheless, resistance to succession, relationship founder/ successor, planning of succession, and type of organisational culture, among others, explain how executive succession is one of the most important and hardest tasks in organisational life (Zahra, 2005). This paper will be supported mainly by qualitative data, taking into account the main results from the project “Roadmap for Portuguese Family Businesses” (NORTE2020/FEDER) developed in Portugal (Marques, 2018) and in Brazil (Silva, 2018), which analyses in-depth interviews conducted to Portuguese (N 23) and Brazilian (N 11) founders/managers/owners. In the present article we wish to discuss the main management challenges of a family business, particularly the importance of succession preparation and the role of the family in the socialisation of the second (third or subsequent) generation.

The article aims at examining cultural strategies of Javanese community, particularly those of the abdi dalem (royal official), in achieving welfare. It is inevitable for the abdi dalem, who has existed for more than one century in Javanese community, to face the changes of era (global era). Javanese cultural values which are believed and accepted as the guidance in daily behaviour are opposed to the values in globalization that worship material as the highest value. The behaviour of abdi dalem as cultural actors holding thight to Javanese cultural values or Javanese logic (logika kejawen) in their evervdav lives will be understood in context to see their fiexibilties in responding to any changes accured around them. Through this understanding, the research is aimed to uncover the functions of cultural values as cultural identity and strategic function in promoting the sustainability of public support (abdi dalem) within the globalization challenges. Hopefully, the result of this research will be useful for the policy makers as well as the community to reveal the positive values of Javanese culture to adapt to the changing era. To obtain the objectives of the research, qualitative method is adopted. Methods of data collection used are participant observation and in-depth interviews. The informants selected in this study are the abdi dalem of Yogyakarta Palace. Through the interpretative approach of the symbols of abdi dalem behavior inexpressible that devotion to the king for ngalap berkah, simple lifestyles and the harmony principle is offered by abdi dalem to achieve welfare within the globalization challenges.
