ABSTRAKPeningkatan produktivitas ternak dapat dicapai melalui perbaikan aspek teknis pemeliharaan yang meliputi perbaikan genetik, pakan, pengelolaan, perkandangan dan kesehatan ternak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi penerapan aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah berdasarkan Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) pada peternakan sapi perah rakyat di Cibungbulang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah survei dan pembagian kuisioner, observasi serta pengukuran langsung. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan disajikan dalam bentuk frekuensi tabulasi untuk menggambarkan karakteristik penerapan setiap aspek pemeliharaan sapi perah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelaksanaan aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah berdasarkan Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) di peternakan rakyat Cibungbulang sebesar 69,75% pada musim hujan dan 67,25% pada musim kemarau. Aspek kesehatan ternak memperlihatkan nilai yang sangat rendah baik pada musim hujan maupun musim kemarau sehingga perlu mendapatkan perhatian khusus agar produktivitas ternak dapat ditingkatkan secara optimal.Kata kunci: biji kecipir, Trichoderma viride, pH, suhu, protein, serat kasarABSTRACTIncreased dairy cow productivity can be achieved through improving the technical aspects of maintenance which include genetic improvement, feed, management, housing and dairy cow health. This study was done to evaluate the application of the technical aspects of dairy cow maintenance based on the Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) on smallholder dairy farm in Cibungbulang. The research method used was a survey and distribution of questionnaires, observations and direct measurements. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in frequency tabulations to describe the characteristics and application each aspect of dairy cow maintenance. The results showed that the implementation of technical aspects of dairy cow maintenance was based on the Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) at smallholder dairy farm in Cibungbulang i.e 69.75% in rainy season and 67.25% in dry season. The health aspect of dairy cow shows a very low value both in rainy and dry season so need special attention to increased productivity optimally.Keywords: dairy cow, technical aspects of maintenance, GDFP

ABSTRAK. Peningkatan produktivitas ternak dapat dicapai melalui perbaikan genetik, pakan, manajemen dan modifikasi lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah berdasarkan panduan Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) pada manajemen pemeliharaan semi intensif di peternakan sapi perah rakyat Pondok Ranggon, Jakarta Timur. Aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah yang dievaluasi meliputi aspek pemuliaan dan reproduksi, pakan, manajemen pemeliharaan, perkandangan, peralatan dan kesehatan ternak. Metode yang digunakan adalah survei, observasi dan pengukuran langsung. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan disajikan dalam bentuk frekuensi tabulasi untuk menggambarkan setiap karakteristik aspek pemuliaan dan reproduksi, pakan, manajemen pemeliharaan, perkandangan, peralatan dan kesehatan ternak. Hasil evaluasi aspek teknis yang dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata pelaksanaan GDFP di stasiun percontohan pemeliharaan sapi perah Pondok Ranggon menunjukkan bahwa pelaksanaan aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah pada peternakan rakyat Pondok Ranggon termasuk dalam kategori cukup baik. Nilai rata-rata tertinggi pelaksana GDFP adalah pada aspek manajemen pemeliharaan, sementara aspek terendah adalah untuk kesehatan ternak. Kesimpulannya adalah pelaksanaan aspek teknis pemeliharaan sapi perah berdasarkan standar GDFP pada peternakan rakyat Pondok Ranggon harus ditingkatkan. (Technical aspects evaluation of dairy cow maintenance towards good dairy farming practices on pondok ranggon small holder dairy farm) ABSTRACT. Increasing livestock productivity can be achieved through genetic improvement, feeding, management and environmental modification. This study was aimed to evaluate various technical aspects in raising dairy cattle under semi intensive management at small dairy farmers in Pondok Ranggon (PR), Jakarta. Some technical aspects evaluated provided breeding, reproduction, feeding, management and health services. The methods used were by survey, observation and direct measurement. Data were analyzed descriptively then completed by tabulation frequencies to describe any characteristics of breeding decision, technical skills, daily management and health services. Evaluation on the considered technical aspects, compared to average values of Good Dairy Farming Practices (GDFP) showed that PR small dairy farmers in this study were categorized quite well. The highest average value of GDFP was for breeding and reproduction aspects, while the lowest one was for health services. It was concluded that PR small dairy farmers should be brought up for better management improvement.

Dairy farmers are expected to maintain farm records for aiding decisions making. However, the extent to which farm records inform decision making is not clear in Gitugi Ward in Murang’a County, Kenya. This study aimed to determine the role that record keeping and maintenance play in enhancing decision making of smallholder dairy farmers in that area. Descriptive survey research design was used to examine 175 smallholder dairy farmers. Simple random sampling technique was used in getting a sample size of 118 subjects. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to test the underlying proposition. Most smallholder dairy farmers have adequate experience in dairy farming and have minimum basic education, although not sufficient for making complex computations and interpretations for key decision making. The kind of decisions made based on dairy farm records statistically and significantly affect output in dairy farming businesses. Livestock Extension Officers should embark on advocacy programs, sensitization workshops, mentorship and training programs on record maintenance practices to ensure dairy farm records are preserved and utilized in supporting decision making. The findings of this study contribute to improvement of dairy farming information management practices and in making data-supported decisions among dairy farmers in Gitugi Ward, Mathioya Sub-County and in other geopolitical regions.

ABSTRACT Increased demand of milk is higher along with the increasing number of population, but increased demand of milk is less offset by increased production of local dairy cow milk so that in fulfilling local milk need is still doing a lot of milk import. With the existing of milk demand, livestock farming development of dairy cows can be done in Jember Regency. One of dairy cow farming in Jember Regency is located in Kemuning Lor Village Arjasa District Jember Regency which is the independent farm. Partnership farm in Jember Regency is in Ajung Village Ajung District, Balung Lor Village Balung District and Rowotengah Village Sumberbaru District which are partnership farm with Galur Murni Cooperative. Both livestock businesses experience the same problem which is the lows of milk production so that causes the lows of income received by the farmer. Milk production can increase if the farmer can apply GDFP (Good Dairy Farming Practice) of good dairy cows. This research aimed to (1) find out GDFP implementation, (2) find out the income, and (3) find out cost use efficiency. This research showed that: (1) The level of GDFP implementation of partnership farm was higher than the level of GDFP implementation of the independent farm. (2) Both livestock businesses of partnership and independent farm in Jember Regency is mutual. The amount of income per tail of partnership dairy cows was IDR 8,895,762/year and the net income per tail of independent dairy cows was IDR 11,635,231/year, (3) The cost use efficiency on partnership and independent dairy farm businesses was all efficient. The efficiency value of the R/C ratio of partnership dairy farm business was 1.25 while the efficiency value of the R/C ratio of the independent dairy farm was 1.18.   Keywords: Dairy Cows, GDFP Implementation, Income, Efficiency of R/C Ratio

The present study was conducted to determine the present status including general information, feeding, breeding, housing, and milking etc. and costs & returns of small dairy farms, to compare the productive and reproductive performance of crossbred and indigenous cows and to make recommendation for development of small scales dairy farm. With this view, the empirical data were collected by using pre tested questionnaire. The study was conducted at 8 thanas in Mymensingh district, and four months-long survey was diminished on thirty small dairy owners. It appeared from the study that 57% farm owners belong to business class and remaining 43 per cent to different categories. Fifty three per cent took dairying as a side-business whereas only 47 per cent took it as a main business enterprise. Major percentage of farm owner education level that was Higher Secondary level (60%) and the average number of animal per farm was 13.01. The average monthly income of farm owners found in the study area was Tk. 4387. It was observed that farm owners had 85.4% crossbred (like Friesian cross and Jersey cross) and was 14.6% indigenous cattle, and 87% farmers used artificial insemination and rest used both artificial and natural services. Daily milk yield/cow/farm was 4.27 and 1.78 liters for a crossbred and indigenous dairy cow, respectively. It was estimated that the rearing cost of dairy cow was Tk. 67.5/cow/day and return from rearing dairy cow was Tk. 85.2/cow/day. The net return was Tk. 17.7/cow/day from crossbred in the study area and cost benefit ratio was 1: 1.26. The study showed that there were significant (P<0.01) differences within the dry period, service per conception, calving to first service, highest and lowest milk production and lactation period of crossbred and indigenous dairy cows. The study also showed non-significant differences within calving interval for crossbred and indigenous. Incase of small dairy farming, the farms were facing a lot of problems such as scarcity of feeds and fodder, high price of concentrate and lack of technical knowledge. Although the dairy cow owners face problems, the study observed that there were potentials particularly for the small dairy farmers. In the present study, a test was developed to measure the knowledge level of dairy farmers about scientific dairy farming. A preliminary set of 87 knowledge items was initially administered to 60 randomly selected dairy farmers for item analysis. The difficulty index and discrimination index was found out, and the items with difficulty index ranging from 30 to 80 and the discrimination index ranging from 0.30 to 0.55 were included in the final format of the knowledge test. A total of 48 items which fulfilled both the criteria were selected for the final format of knowledge test. Reliability of the test through split half method was found out to be 0.386 and the coefficient of correlation value by the test-retest method was 0.452, which was found to be significant at 1% level of significance. Hence, the knowledge test constructed was highly stable, reliable and validated for measuring what it intends to.

Abstract Purpose Life cycle assessment studies on smallholder farms in tropical regions generally use data that is collected at one moment in time, which could hamper assessment of the exact situation. We assessed seasonal differences in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) from Indonesian dairy farms by means of longitudinal observations and evaluated the implications of number of farm visits on the variance of the estimated GHGE per kg milk (GHGEI) for a single farm, and the population mean. Methods An LCA study was done on 32 smallholder dairy farms in the Lembang district area, West Java, Indonesia. Farm visits (FVs) were performed every 2 months throughout 1 year: FV1–FV3 (rainy season) and FV4–FV6 (dry season). GHGEs were assessed for all processes up to the farm-gate, including upstream processes (production and transportation of feed, fertiliser, fuel and electricity) and on-farm processes (keeping animals, manure management and forage cultivation). We compared means of GHGE per unit of fat-and-protein-corrected milk (FPCM) produced in the rainy and the dry season. We evaluated the implication of number of farm visits on the variance of the estimated GHGEI, and on the variance of GHGE from different processes. Results and discussion GHGEI was higher in the rainy (1.32 kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM) than in the dry (0.91 kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM) season (P < 0.05). The between farm variance was 0.025 kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM in both seasons. The within farm variance in the estimate for the single farm mean decreased from 0.69 (1 visit) to 0.027 (26 visits) kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM (rainy season), and from 0.32 to 0.012 kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM (dry season). The within farm variance in the estimate for the population mean was 0.02 (rainy) and 0.01 (dry) kg CO2-eq kg−1 FPCM (1 visit), and decreased with an increase in farm visits. Forage cultivation was the main source of between farm variance, enteric fermentation the main source of within farm variance. Conclusions The estimated GHGEI was significantly higher in the rainy than in the dry season. The main contribution to variability in GHGEI is due to variation between observations from visits to the same farm. This source of variability can be reduced by increasing the number of visits per farm. Estimates for variation within and between farms enable a more informed decision about the data collection procedure.
