BiOCl nanosheets nucleated and grew on cottage cheese-like SiC substrate via hydrothermal procedure, through which a tight heterojunction was formed. SiC/BiOCl composites with varied morphologies were acquired that the formation of BiOCl was involved with different form of carbon existed on surface of SiC. The photocatalytic mechanism analysis revealed that the combination of SiC and BOC significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities owing to the improved visible light utilization, efficient separation of photo-generated carriers, and promoted reactive area. The main active species during the photocatalytic reaction was determined as ·O2− radical by additionally adding trapping agent into the reactant. The SiC-BOC composites showed much higher photoactivities in photocurrent responses and photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl, which mainly attributed to the well-built heterointerface promoted by Bi-C bonds and the interlaced structure obtained by increasing exposure of (010) facets in BiOCl. The nucleation, growth and combination architecture of BiOCl was all influenced by the involvement of SiC.

To improve the high charge carrier recombination rate and low visible light absorption of {001} facets exposed TiO2 [TiO2(001)] nanosheets, few-layered MoS2 nanoparticles were loaded on the surfaces of TiO2(001) nanosheets by a simple photodeposition method. The photocatalytic activities towards Rhodamine B (RhB) were investigated. The results showed that the MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites exhibited much enhanced photocatalytic activities compared with the pure TiO2(001) nanosheets. At an optimal Mo/Ti molar ratio of 25%, the MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites displayed the highest photocatalytic activity, which took only 30[Formula: see text]min to degrade 50[Formula: see text]mL of RhB (50[Formula: see text]mg/L). The active species in the degradation reaction were determined to be h[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]OH according to the free radical trapping experiments. The reduced charge carrier recombination rate, enhanced visible light utilization and increased surface areas contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic performances of the 25% MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites.

A series of TiO2, TiO2/Pd, and TiO2/PdO hollow sphere photocatalysts was successfully prepared via a combination of hydrothermal, sol-immobilization, and calcination methods. The structure and optical properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Telleranalysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda measurement, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalysis efficiencies of all samples were evaluated through the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. Results indicated that TiO2/PdO demonstrated a higher photocatalytic activity (the photocatalytic degradation efficiency could reach up to 100% within 40 min) than the other samples and could maintain a stable photocatalytic degradation efficiency for at least four cycles. Finally, after using different scavengers, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the primary active species for the effectiveness of the TiO2/PdO photocatalyst.

Photocatalytic activity ofTiO2nanoparticles was successfully enhanced by addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to make CNT/TiO2nanocomposites by sol-gel method at ambient temperature. CNT treated by HNO3 : H2SO4treatment (1 : 3 v/v) was mixed withTiO2nanoparticles at various molar ratios and calcination temperatures. The optimal molar ratio of CNT : TiO2was found at 0.05 : 1 by weight. The optimal calcination condition was 400°C for 3 h. From the results, the photocatalytic activities of CNT/TiO2nanocomposites were determined by the decolorization of 1 × 10−5 M methylene blue (MB) under visible light. CNT/TiO2nanocomposites could enhance the photocatalytic activity and showed faster for the degradation of MB with only 90 min. The degradation efficiency of the MB solution with CNT/TiO2nanocomposite achieved 70% which was higher than that with pristineTiO2(22%). This could be explained that CNT preventsTiO2from its agglomeration which could further enhance electron transfer in the composites. In addition, CNT/TiO2nanocomposites had high specific surface area (202 m2/g) which is very promising for utilization as a photocatalyst for environmental applications.

In this paper, a novel heterostructure of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal photocatalyst was synthesized and characterized. It exhibited significantly photocatalytic efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of the tetracycline than pure Bi[Formula: see text]TiO2 and CdSe and showed high stability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity might be attributed to the formation of heterostructure between CdSe QDs and 3D Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text], in which CdSe QDs served as electron trapper to improve the separation of photodegradation electron–hole pairs, and provided a number of active adsorption sites for the photogenerated of pollutants. The photocatalytic mechanism of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal heterostructure was also proposed.

Anatase TiO 2 with {001} facets is much more active than that with {101} facets, which has been verified via experiments and theoretical calculations. Graphene has garnered much attention since it was initially synthesized, due to its unique properties. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/{001} faceted TiO 2 composites were fabricated via a solvothermal method. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometry, photoluminescence and Raman analysis. The results revealed that the graphene oxide was reduced during the preparation process of the {001} faceted TiO 2 , and combined with the surface of {001} TiO 2 . The photocatalytic activities of the composites were evaluated through the degradation of basic violet, under both white light ( λ > 390 nm) and visible light ( λ = 420 nm) irradiation. The results indicated that the photocatalytic activities of the {001} faceted TiO 2 were significantly improved following the incorporation of RGO, particularly under visible light irradiation. Theoretical calculations showed that the band structure of the {001} faceted TiO 2 was modified via graphene hybridization, where the separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs was promoted; thus, the photocatalytic activity was enhanced.

Bi2WO6 doped with iodine ions were synthesized using hydrothermal method and their photocatalytic activities to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light was investigated. The successful incorporation of I ions in Bi2WO6 was proved by XRD and XPS. UV-vis absorption spectra results show that I ion was successfully doped into Bi2WO6 and a red shift for I-doped Bi2WO6 appeared when compared to pure Bi2WO6. The photocatalytic activities of the photocatalysts were evaluated by the decolorization of RhB under visible-light irradiation. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of I-doped Bi2WO6 was much higher than the undoped Bi2WO6.

Two new oxide photocatalysts in the Pb–Mg–Nb ternary system, Pb3MgNb2O9 (PMN) and Pb1.83Mg0.29Nb1.71O6.39, have been synthesized, and their photophysical and photocatalytic properties were investigated for the first time. The band gaps of PMN and Pb1.83Mg0.29Nb1.71O6.39 were estimated to be 3.2 and 2.8 eV, respectively, from their absorption spectra. The photocatalytic activity evaluated from the decomposition of 2-propanol into acetone under visible-light irradiation indicated that Pb1.83Mg0.29Nb1.71O6.39 exhibited at least 20 times higher activity than PMN and has a strong oxidizing potential to mineralize organic compounds.
