Physiological changes in elderly individuals (EI) can contribute to nutritional deterioration and comorbidities that reduce their quality of life. Factors such as diet can modulate some of these effects. The aim was to evaluate the functionality of foods added with Brosimum alicastrum Sw. seed flour in EI. EI (n = 23) living in nursing home conditions agreed to participate. A control stage was carried out (30 days) and subsequently, an intervention stage (30 days) was realized in which a muffin and a beverage, designed for EI, were added to the participants’ their usual diet. In both stages, anthropometric parameters, body composition, nutritional status, dietary intake, sarcopenic status, cognitive and affective states, biometric parameters, and total phenolic compounds (TPC), and antioxidant capacity in foods and plasma of EI were determined. The results showed that the consumption of the foods improved the energy intake and preserved the muscle reserves of the EI. The EI gained body weight (+1.1 kg), increased their protein (+18.6 g/day; 1.5 g/kg BW/day), dietary fiber (+13.4 g/day), iron (+4.4 mg/day), zinc (+1.8 mg/day), folic acid (+83.4 µg/day) consumption while reducing their cholesterol (−66 mg/day) and sodium (−319.5 mg/day) consumption. LDL-C lipoproteins reduced (14.8%) and urea (33.1%) and BUN (33.3%) increased. The TPC increased (7.8%) in the plasma, particularly in women (10.7%). The foods improve the EI nutritional status, and this has a cardiovascular protective effect that can benefit the health of the EI.

Background: Health practitioners around the world are now dealing withincreasing health problems, including oral disease. One of them is tooth loss.Losing teeth can cause problems or disturbances in the main functions of teeth(mastication, aesthetics and phonetics). These conditions can be overcome byusing denture. If the loss of untreated teeth doesn�t restored using denture, it will cause the function of the missing tooth can not be restored, which will result in disruption of nutritional status and quality of life of the elderly. This study aimed to determine the relationship of tooth loss with nutritional status in elderly society in the Penatahan village Penebel Tabanan.Methods: The research was an observational analytic study with cross sectionalresearch design. Total sampling used with total sample 109 people. The datawere collected by filling the dental chart, measuring IMT and interview using theOHIP-14 questionnaire.Results: The results showed 65.1% respondents had loss <6 teeth, 42.2%respondents had obesity, 75.2% respondents observed poor quality of life. Dataanalyzed using kolmogorov smirnov obtained p = 0,952 for relationship betweentooth loss with nuturional status and p = 0.676 for relationship between useof denture with nutritional status. Chi square used to test relationship betweentooth loss with quality of life (p= 0,735) and use of denture with quality of lifeshowed p = 0,139.Conclusions: The conclusion is there is no relationship between tooth lossand use of denture with nutritional status and quality of life in elderly society inPenatahan Village Penebel Tabanan

Ageing is the multidimensional process in humans with changes occurring in physical, psychological and social aspects which increase their proneness to health ailments. The associated functional impairment and physical inability will influence on their absorption and metabolism leading to the changes in nutritional status. Epidemiological study was conducted among the elderly subjects with respective to understand the quality of health in relation to the nutritional profile. Using a purposive randomized sampling technique, the elderly subjects were selected and assessed for the nutrition and health condition. The investigation comprises approximately 90 subjects of old age institutions and 90 subjects of residents from different domiciles. The study was conducted using standardized validated tools and checklist with oral interview technique and one to one interactions. Findings: In accordance with the body mass evaluation; approximately 59% elderly living at own houses were under Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 obesity in comparison to their counterpart. Medical health records indicated iron deficiency anemia among 10% of subjects. Gastritis, Diabetes, hypertension, arthritis was observed to be the major health problems. Comparatively 64% male elderly from household had oral problems and underwent for dentures. Often had three meal patterns in a day. Henceforth, there is a need to understand and address on the nutritional needs, etiology and demographic characteristics interlinked with comorbidities and health disabilities among aging population. Evidently a significant association was noticed between nutritional status on morbidities and health quality among elderly. Nutrition is an important factor for health, physical and cognitive function, vitality, quality of life and longevity. Elderly people oft en have low food intake, induced by multifactorial causes, as a result, malnutrition is an independent risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality, regardless of the underlying pathologies (chronic organ failure, cognitive impairment, cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes etc.) including overweight or obese subjects.The prevalence of malnutrition varies from 4% to 10% in the elderly population from the community, from 15% to 38% for institutionalized elderly people and from 30% to 70% for hospitalized ones. The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional status of institutionalized elderly people and establish correlations between the determinants of malnutrition and fragility syndrome.Th e epidemiological study is part of the project 20.80009.8007.25 “Fragility: diagnosis and prophylaxis in relation to medicopsychosocial problems of the vulnerable elderly”, included 50 patients institutionalized in the Republican Asylum for the Disabled and Retired in Chisinau.All persons were examined by the complex geriatric evaluation, approved by the order of the Ministry of Health no. 619 of 07.09.2010. According to the results, both malnutrition and the risk of malnutrition were high in institutionalized elderly people.Among the determinants of malnutrition, the highest association had the number of concomitant diseases, decreased functionality of the elderly, the presence of depression syndrome and cognitive disorders. At the same time, the malnutrition syndrome correlated with the fragility criteria but also with the degree of severity of frailty of the institutionalized elderly people.

Defatted sunflower seed flour (DSSF) is an upcycled by-product of sunflower oil extraction, rich in protein, fibre and antioxidants. This study assessed the instrumental and sensory quality of biscuits enriched with DSSF at 18% and 36% w/w as a replacement for wheat flour. Measurements included colour, texture, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity. Sensory analysis was carried out with Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA). The inclusion of DSSF significantly increased the protein content of the biscuits, as well as the TPC and antioxidant capacity of the biscuits. The resulting products were significantly darker, less red and less yellow with increasing DSSF levels, while hardness (measured instrumentally) increased. Sensory results agreed with colour measurements, concluding that DSSF biscuits were more “Brown” than the control, and with texture measurements where biscuits with 36% DSSF had a significantly firmer bite. In addition, DSSF biscuits at 36% inclusion had higher QDA scores for “Off-note” and the lowest scores for “Crumbly” and “Crumb aeration”. DSSF biscuits at 18% inclusion were similar to the control in most parameters and should be considered for further developments. These results show the potential of the upcycled DSSF by-product as a novel, sustainable and healthy food ingredient.

All Indonesian children are national assets where the future of the nation depends on their quality. East Java Province experienced a demographic bonus period and the peak occurred in 2019 and a third of the population of East Java were children aged 0-17 years. Now the government of East Java Province has implemented five strategies in dealing with demographic bonuses, namely improving the quality of youth human resources, creating quality human resources, placing the elderly population as assets, improving health efforts, and economic empowerment. In the strategy of increasing health efforts, it is necessary to evaluate the nutritional status of children and toddlers. Improving the nutritional status of the community is one of the efforts that has a significant impact and is one of the determining factors for improving the quality of human resources. At the individual level, nutritional conditions are influenced by nutritional intake and related infectious diseases. The first two years of life is a critical period, if there are nutritional disorders in this period, the impact is permanent.

Abstrak Latar belakang: Usia Harapan Hidup (UHH) penduduk dunia, tidak terkecuali di Indonesia, meningkat signifikan selama 10 tahun terakhir. Hal ini mengakibatkan peningkatan pesat jumlah lansia, jika hal ini tidak diimbangi dengan kualitas hidup yang baik tentunya akan berdampak pada gangguan kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara status gizi (IMT) dan aktivitas fisik dengan kualitas hidup lansia di RW 02 Desa Jatibening, Bekasi. Metode: Penelitian ini adalah observasional analitik dengan desain cross sectional. Responden dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik simple random sampling dengan jumlah sampel 63 lansia (>60 tahun). Pengambilan data dilakukan pada bulan Desember 2020 – Januari 2021. Data status gizi diperoleh melalui pengukuran langsung menggunakan timbangan digital dan pengukur tinggi badan mikrotoise. Data aktivitas fisik dan kualitas hidup diperoleh melalui pengisian kuesioner dengan wawancara menggunakan Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) dan World Health Organization Quality of Life Old (WHOQOL-OLD). Pengolahan data menggunakan uji korelasi rank spearman. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara status gizi dengan kualitas hidup (r = 0,471; p = 0,000) dan ada hubungan antara aktivitas fisik dengan kualitas hidup (r = 0,673; p = 0,000) di RW 02 Desa Jatibening , Bekasi. This research was aims to analyze the relationship between nutritional status (BMI) and physical activity with the quality of life of the elderly in RW 02 Jatibening Village, Bekasi.. Methods: This research method is analytic observational with a cross-sectional design. The respondent was selected by using simple random sampling technique with a total sample of 63 elderly (> 60 years). Data collection was carried out in December 2020 - January 2021. Nutritional status data obtained through direct measurement using a digital scale and a microtoise height meter. Physical activity and quality of life data were obtained through filling out a questionnaire with interviews using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Old (WHOQOL-OLD). Data processing using the Spearman rank correlation test. Result: The results showed that there was a relationship between nutritional status and quality of life (r = 0.471; p = 0.000) and there was a relationship between physical activity and quality of life (r = 0.673; p = 0.000) in RW 02 Jatibening Village, Bekasi. Introduction: To improve the quality of life and health of the elderly, attention is paid to the early detection of frailty syndrome. Unfortunately, one simple and practical screening tool has not been established yet. Recently came the proposal of the Novel Frailty Index (NFI) created by Yamada and Arai. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between nutritional status and NFI of the elderly. Materials and methods: In a group of 67 elderly patients (27 hospitalised and 40 living in the home environment) we used the NFI and evaluated nutritional status with the use of full-MNA together with SNAQ (appetite questionnaire), manual dynamometry and bioimpedance analysis. Results: Based on the NFI results, frailty syndrome was diagnosed in more than half of hospitalised elderly. The syndrome was significantly less prevalent in free-living older people (15% vs 63%, p<0.001).We found the significant correlations of NFI values with age (r=0.031, p=0.03), co-morbidity(r=0.295, p=0.016), phase angle (r=-0.407, p<0.001), full-MNA score (r=-0.515, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our preliminary results suggest the relevant association between NFI results and age, phase angle as well comorbidity and nutritional status. So further evaluation of NFI as a screening tool for frailty syndrome diagnose is needed.
