This research aimed to measure the level of quality of academic advising and student support services from the perspective of students of Preparatory Year at the University of Najran. To achieve this, the descriptive analytical method was followed by administering a questionnaire consisting of (37 items) which were distributed over four dimensions (the academic advisor – the quality of the academic support for outstanding and struggling students – the quality of supporting talented and creative students – the quality of complaints and suggestions services). The sample consisted of (300) students selected from among the preparatory year at the University of Najran. The results indicated that the level of quality of academic advising services and student support services was (medium level) with a mean of (2.24). There were statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in the level of quality of academic services and student support services according to the level (first-second) in favor of the second level. There were also differences in the level of academic advising and student support services according to student status at (α = 0.05) in favor of struggling students. Results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the students' assessment of the quality of services due to the gender variable. The study concluded that academic advising services need more efforts to improve the quality of services, especially in providing the necessary support to students, as well as the services for gifted and creative students, complaints and suggestions services. The study recommended the need to adopt clear mechanisms for academic advising and student support through which these services can be provided to all student categories and to evaluate the quality of these services. Keywords: academic advising, preparatory year, quality, Najran University.

The main aim of this study is to highlight the writing errors made by Saudi students majoring in English. The study selected a sample of two groups of female Saudi students residing in two Saudi regions: Tabuk and Hafr Al Batin. The students were requested to write approximately three to four paragraphs about one of three topics related to Saudi Arabia: social media and its effects on Saudi social life, marriage customs in Saudi Arabia, or the economy of Saudi Arabia. In analyzing the collected writing data, the students’ writing errors were identified and classified into four categories: grammar type, syntax type, mechanics type, and lexical type errors. Then, the frequency and error percentages of each subcategory were calculated for both groups. The findings show that both groups produced most errors in the subcategory of spelling followed by tenses subcategory even though the students from the University of Hafr Al Batin made overall higher percentages of errors than the errors’ percentages made by the students from the University of Tabuk. Further investigation reveals that all students in both regions hardly practice English writing and that Arabic interference contributes to the students’ English writing errors. The findings also imply that the curricula specialists at the Saudi ministry of education might consider including more educational material to improve the English writing skills of Saudi university students.

Academic advising is of paramount importance to students in higher learning institutions on setting their personal life, academic and career goals, that academic advisors shall fulfil. Based the Senate Legislation of Madda Walabu University, instructors are often assigned to shoulder the responsibility of academic advising, but it is rarely seen when they provide the service. This enquiry tries to assess the Practices and Challenges of Academic Advising services provided at Madda Walabu University. To this end, the study used both qualitative and quantitative approach of Descriptive survey type in nature. Interview and Questionnaire were the data collection instruments used to gather the primary data from the participants of this study. Accordingly, 107(25%) systematically selected 3rd year University students of 2016 academic year filled the 21 closed- ended item questionnaire, and eleven(11) randomly selected instructors (Directors, Teachers, and Department heads ) from Eleven departments of the four randomly selected colleges were interviewed to get the necessary data for this study. The result obtained from the students’ questionnaire and the interview result of the study show that academic advising is such a marginalized academic practice that received little or no attention at Madda Walabu University. It was revealed that advisees neither make regular contact with their advisors nor are the advisors themselves willing to devote their time and academic potentials for the betterment of their learners’ advice.  Most of the lecturers do not have the essentials skills in academic advising nor do they know how to help students exploit the available resources to achieve academic results. A wide–gap between advisors and advisees, poor motivation on part of the advisees seeking advising services, advisees’ lack of self–confidence and inability to approach positively to their advisers, the unwillingness of advisers to offer advice services, lack of sufficient know-how and insufficient incentives given for advisors were the commonest challenges identified. Recommendations have also been forwarded to the concerned bodies for the betterment of the service provided in the University.

Abstract The paper analyzes paradigms that highlight the role of active teaching and active learning methods in developing the skills for the professional and social life of the students. The first chapter of the paper argues the need to develop social and creative abilities that lead students to competence in design thinking. Successful response of the student to the demands of professional and social life requires skills like empathy, assertiveness, cooperation, problem solving, implementation of innovative solutions. Ability of design thinking involves a divergent thinking, ability to autonomously design their own strategies in relation to personal development needs, self-assertion and prosocial project development. The training of these skills is possible if the educational environment is one that offers stimulating techniques, adequately prepared human resources, social training contexts. Interactive teaching enables the student to act independently, to be capable of self-management and personal development. The proactive creativity of teachers facilitates active learning methods which will lead to students developing empathy, assertiveness and competence in design thinking.

The article presents a personal relationship between the two outstanding authors, between F. Ruszczyc, a painter, writer, organizer of artistic and social life in the Vilnius Region and J. Bułhak, an excellent photographer and an intriguing writer. Attempts were made to indicate how this relation was significant to the functioning of the Vilnius University at the beginning of its “renewed” existence. The analyzes were based on the diaries of F. Ruszczyc (“Ku Wilnu”, “W Wilnie”) and the notes of J. Bułhak (“26 lat z Ruszczycem”, “Liść wawrzynu i płatek róży”). These works tell us a lot about the mission of the University and tasks that it faced in 1919. Regina Ruszczycowa is mentioned in the article as well. The analysis of her correspondence with Ferdynand Ruszczyc reveals us many details about university life and about her husband fascination with Vilnius.

Students who starts university in a new and often different city suddenly find themselves in a different academic and social environment. This new life differs from their past experiences in terms of educational experiences, human relations and social life. This descriptive study investigates the adaptation levels of first year nursing students of two different public universities in Izmir, Turkey at the beginning of the academic year and aims to determine the factors affecting their adaptation. The research data were obtained from 125 students enrolled in the nursing department of these universities by using a questionnaire. The data collection tools consisted of socio-demographic form and the University Life Scale. Numbers and percentages, ANOVA, and independent sample t test were used in the analysis. 75.2% of the students included in the study were female, and their mean age was calculated as 9=18.9±1.10. 55.2% of the students voluntarily chose the nursing department. The rate of students who made a university selection for the first time was 97.6%. The students were found to have the highest mean score in the "adaptation to the university environment" subscale and the lowest score in the "academic adaptation" subscale. The mean scores of adaptation to the university environment, adaptation to relationships with the opposite sex, and total adaptation were found to be higher for the students who opted for the profession willingly than those who did not and this difference was found to be statistically significant (220.202±36.43, p<0.05). The findings indicate that willful selection of the profession, the level of education of the mother, profession of the father, parents' living together, economic status, and living with the family are the variables that affect the adaptation of the students to the university life. Preparing university adaptation programs by taking the individual, social and cultural characteristics affecting the adaptation into account and tailoring the guidance and consultancy services based on student needs may facilitate successful adaptation.
