The interest of scientists and companies in understanding the business implications of environmental commitments is timely; however, a dilemma remains at the firm level: is environmental sustainability a strategic factor for business competitiveness? The author contributes to this international end interdisciplinary debate through a double analysis, theoretical and empirical. Starting from a systematic literature review, the main correlations between environmental commitments and business performance are identified in a scholar's perspective. Based on the results from an Italian survey, the main added values associated with certified environmental management system are verified with a manager's perspective. Finally, the findings obtained from theoretical and empirical points of view are compared, to discuss confirmations or contradictions and underline questions still open.

Companies constantly thrive to enhance their performance in order to achieve their environmental, social, and economic goals. One way to achieve these goals is to integrate some effective management tools, such as an environmental management system (EMS), that can support sustainable development and value creation. Based on the literature, in this study some EMS integration dimensions were identified that can be used to assess its influence on business performance. The study was conducted on SMEs listed on the AeRO-Bucharest Stock Exchange that voluntary apply the ISO 14001 EMS, using a quantitative approach. To assess the EMS integration score, principal component analysis was used. Using logistic regression analysis, business performance probability (quantified by return on assets) was estimated for each company included in the final sample. Fuzzy logic was further used for modelling the influence of EMS integration on business performance probability. The research results showed that EMS integration has different effects on business performance probability, considering the influence of activity field and environmental management experience. This research assertion could be extended for all the listed Romanian companies or for major companies at the EU level.

The amount of MSMEs units about 99.99 percent of the overall number of business operators in Indonesia showed that MSMEs play a significant role in economic growth and development. At the same time, MSMEs cumulative contribution to environmental issues is not recorded MSMEs participation in the cleaner environment has not yet been noticed. Thus, the environmental management system for MSMes is crucial. This study is a literature review about the implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system in MSMEs, challenges and its future potential. The result and discussion discussed the case study of ISO 14001 implementation in Indonesia and other countries. Case studies from Indonesia and other countries showed that implementation of ISO 14001 is possible for MSMEs. The biggest challenges of its implementation is cost, the competence of employees, and resources available for the organization. An alternative for overcoming these challenges is implementing other models of EMS that is more suitable for MSMEs. The important aspects is the environmental awareness of the stakeholders and the internal and external drivers within the organization. Further studies can be done to research specific case studies of EMS such as ISO 14001 or AMEMs implementation in MSMEs.

The EU Marine Strategy Directive (2008/56/EC) proposes four marine regions as a political geographic framework for implementation of the Community's environmental policy. This study critically analyzes the state-based approach, which the Directive uses to outline the regions' boundaries. It suggests that environmental sustainability of marine odies strongly depends on the geographic congruence between their watersheds and the borders of the respective environmental management system, i.e., marine regions have to be environmentally managed within their watersheds. The proposed watershed-based approach also takes into consideration all elements – water, land, and air – of marine regions, which is a conditio sine qua non for their integrated and sustainable management. In the case of the Black Sea region in particular, the borders of a watershed-based environmental management system include a much wider set of stakeholder countries and enable a higher level of environmental cooperation among them.

Due to various government regulations and many other environmental related problems industries have to focus on these issues if they want to make business in the competitive market. Implementation and certification of Environmental Management System (EMS) is very important for industries as it will help to remove many environmental related issues and for sustainable development. Environmental related issues play different role in developed and developing countries. Developed countries have set up their own environmental standards and regulations which should be fulfilled by industries of other countries to have business with them. Regulatory pressure play important role to save environment but other factors like customer awareness, competitor’s pressure, societal pressure etc. are also important. Environmental issues related to automotive sectors need appropriate investigations in developing countries. Various drivers which create pressure on companies to adopt EMS practices are identified by extensive literature review which is the main objective of this paper. It includes providing a background on related concepts, literature review on various environment related issues and the concluding remarks for this review to save environment to some extent.
