Effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment on Fusion and Heat Affected Zone Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Inconel X-750 Welds

The Inconel X-750 indicates good hot corrosion resistance, high stability and strength at high temperatures and for this reason the alloy is used in manufacturing of gas turbine hot components. The objective of this research was study the effect of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on fusion zone and heat affected zone microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel X-750 weld. After welding, samples were solutionized at 1500 0C. Various aging temperature and times were studied. The results show that aging temperature and time during PWHT can greatly affect microstructure and hardness in fusion zone and heat affected zone. As high aging temperature was used, the grain size also increased and M23C6 at the grain boundary decreased. This can result in decreased of hardness. Moreover excessive aging temperature can result in increasing MC carbide intensity in parent phase (austenite). It can also be observed that M23C6 at the grain boundary decreased due to high aging temperature. This resulted in decreasing of hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone. Experimental results showed that the aging temperature 705 0C aging time of 24 hours provided smaller grain size, suitable size and intensity of MC carbide resulting in higher hardness both in weld metal and HAZ.

This study evaluated the microstructure, grain size, and mechanical properties of the alloy 800H rotary friction welds in as-welded and post-weld heat-treated conditions. The standards for the alloy 800H not only specify the composition and mechanical properties but also the minimum grain sizes. This is because these alloys are mostly used in creep resisting applications. The dynamic recrystallization of the highly strained and plasticized material during friction welding resulted in the fine grain structure (20 ± 2 µm) in the weld zone. However, a small increase in grain size was observed in the heat-affected zone of the weldment with a slight decrease in hardness compared to the base metal. Post-weld solution heat treatment (PWHT) of the friction weld joints increased the grain size (42 ± 4 µm) in the weld zone. Both as-welded and post-weld solution heat-treated friction weld joints failed in the heat-affected zone during the room temperature tensile testing and showed a lower yield strength and ultimate tensile strength than the base metal. A fracture analysis of the failed tensile samples revealed ductile fracture features. However, in high-temperature tensile testing, post-weld solution heat-treated joints exhibited superior elongation and strength compared to the as-welded joints due to the increase in the grain size of the weld metal. It was demonstrated in this study that the minimum grain size requirement of the alloy 800H friction weld joints could be successfully met by PWHT with improved strength and elongation, especially at high temperatures.

4330V is a high strength, high toughness, heat treatable low alloy steel for application in the oil, gas and aerospace industries. It is typically used for large diameter drilling parts where high toughness and strength are required. The research describes the effect of preheat temperature, interpass temperature, heat input, and post weld heat treatment on strength, hardness, toughness, and changes to microstructure in the weld joint. Welding with the lower heat input and no post weld heat treatment resulted in optimal mechanical properties in the weld metal. Austempering at 400 °C resulted in optimal mechanical properties in the HAZ. Increasing preheat and interpass temperature from 340 °C to 420 °C did not improve Charpy V-notch values or ultimate tensile strength in the weld metal or heat affected zones. The higher temperature increased the width of the heat affected zone. Austempering at 400 °C reduced HAZ hardness to a level comparable to the base metal. Both tempering and austempering at 400 °C for 10 hours reduced toughness in the weld metal.

Quality of a weld produced is generally evaluated by different parameters such as weld size, bead geometry, deposition rate, hardness and strength. A common problem that has been faced at the construction sites is to obtain a good welded joint having the required strength with minimal detrimental residual stresses to avoid any premature cracking due to high variation of hardness. In order to address this issue and to attain good weld quality, this study has been made to comprehend the effect of the post weld heat treatment on P91 material welds produced by TIG welding. Findings from the studies indicate that the PWHT has significant influence on the weld hardness of Alloy Steel-A335 P91 pipes. It is eminent that during cooling, after welding of P91, quenched martensite was formed in the HAZ that results in an increased hardness to an undesirable level of more than 250HB. PWHT at temperature of 760°C for 2 hours has good influence on mechanical properties as the hardness decreases and turns out to be uniformly distributed. If the PWHT is correctly carried out, the hardness of parent metals, heat affected zones and weld metal can be brought into the required limits to avoid any premature cracking due to high variation of hardness.

AbstractThe microstructures and mechanical properties of dissimilar weld joints between T92 and Super 304H steels were investigated. Dissimilar weld joints with four groove angles were constructed using gas tungsten arc welding. The results showed that post-weld heat treatment improved the mechanical properties of the dissimilar weld joints. The optimal groove angle for T92/Super 304H dissimilar weld joints was found to be 20°, considering mechanical properties. Furthermore, the transformation from equiaxed dendrites to columnar dendrites was observed in the weld metal. Epitaxial growth and delta ferrites were found around the fusion line between the Super 304H and the weld metal.

The high-carbon steel strips are one of the most widely used base materials of bandsaw blade manufacturing. These materials have sufficient strength and ductility to cope with the high fatigue load of the bandsaw blades. These endless strips are produced by welding, and therefore the weld and the heat affected zone have different mechanical properties, like tensile strength and fatigue resistance, than the base material. These properties of the weld can be influenced by preheat and post weld heat treatment. Regarding to the latest industrial requirements, the application of laserbeam welding was examined to produce higher standard bandsaw blade. The laserbeam welded joints has lower heat input and narrower heat affected zone compared to metal inert gas (MIG) welding, which is currently used in bandsaw blade manufacturing. To assure the proper mechanical properties and sufficient resistance to fatigue, an examination was carried out to determine the effect of preheat temperature and post weld heat treatment time on the mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour of the laserbeam welded joint.

Material SA 387 Grade 11 Class 1 tergolong material 1.25Cr-0,5Mo sangat sensitif terhadap hydrogen cracking serta nilai kekerasan yang tinggi setelah dilakukan proses pengelasan. Untuk meminimalkan kemungkinan terjadinya hydrogen cracking pada Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) dan nilai kekerasan yang tinggi maka direkomendasikan untuk dilakukan preheat dan post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Pada penelitian ini PWHT dilakukan dengan variabel temperatur dan holding time pada masing-masing spesimen, yaitu 590°C, 620°C, dan 650°C dengan holding time 30 dan 60 menit. Pemanasan dan pendinginan dilakukan di dalam automatic muffle furnace. Hasil pengujian struktur mikro menunjukkan bahwa perbedaan temperatur dan holding time dapat mempengaruhi struktur mikro. Pada uji struktur mikro diketahui bahwa semakin tinggi temperatur dan semakin lama holding time mengakibatkan dominasi fasa bainit semakin berkurang. Hasil uji kekerasan tertinggi terletak pada temperatur dan holding time terendah, yaitu 590ºC dan holding time 30 menit dengan nilai kekerasan 153,08 HVN pada base metal, 215,23 HVN pada HAZ, serta 239,28 HVN pada weld metal. Nilai kekerasan terendah didapatkan pada temperatur dan holding time tertinggi, yaitu 650ºC dan holding time 60 menit dengan nilai kekerasan 138,71HVN pada base metal, 173,65 HVN pada HAZ, serta 215,52 HVN pada weld metal.

In this paper, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) was performed on low carbon steel with three types of butt joint (i.e., square, single V, and double V) and uncapping of the weldment. The welding performance is measured based on the mechanical properties (i.e., strength and hardness). Grain size and microstructure of the weldments were also evaluated. The results show that all tested samples show similar tensile strength, which means there was no significant effect of the type of butt joint type or uncapping. The hardness of the weld metal was found to be slightly higher than that of heat affected zone and base metal, in which both showed similar hardness values. The grain size of the weld metal was also finer than that of heat affected zone and base metal. This trend in hardness and grain size on three regions of the welded sample was the same regardless of the butt joint type and whether the weldment was uncapped or not.
