Silken is a new early-maturing apple cultivar ripening in the same season as McIntosh with a unique creamy skin colour. It is crisper and sweeter, and possesses a higher aromatic intensity than Royal Gala or McIntosh. In preference tests, it has been rated equal to Gala and better than McIntosh in Flavour and texture. AC Emerson, a medium-early maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), was released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Agri-Food Diversification Research Centre, Morden, Manitoba, in 1994. The cultivar has high oil quality, medium-large seed size and was high yielding in both early and late seeding tests in the Black and the Brown Soil zones of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Because of its chlorosis tolerance, it is particularly well suited to the calcareous soils of Manitoba. It is immune to North American races of rust caused by Melampsora lini and moderately resistant to wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini. Soil was sampled in 20 high-density apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards which had generally been NP-fertigated using drip irrigation for the 2–5 yr since their establishment. Soil chemical changes including decreases in pH, extractable Ca, Mg, K, S and B and increases in extractable Cu, Mn and Fe were measurable, often within 2 yr. Leaf nutrient concentrations below deficiency levels were widespread for B and Zn and in a few cases, also occurred for Mg and K. AC Juniper is an early maturing oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivar with high grain yield and good lodging resistance. It has a higher kernel weight, a higher percentage of plump kernels, and a lower percentage of thin kernels than Jasper. Its hull content is significantly lower than Cascade, similar to Jasper and Dumont, and higher than Derby. AC Juniper is well adapted to Alberta and the rust-free areas of western Saskatchewan. Seven local apple cultivars of the trans-Himalayan Ladakh region were studied for phenological and pomological characteristics. Early and extended flowering was observed. Flowering began 12 days earlier as compared to Royal Delicious, a popular introduced cultivar. The cultivars attained fruit maturity between mid-August to early September, which is one month earlier than Royal Delicious. Apples of the Ladakh region are soft (6.1±1.1 kg cm-2) and small in size (60.1±29.1 g). The unique characteristics observed in apples of the Ladakh region, such as early flowering and early fruit maturity offer an opportunity for exploring the native cultivars for future breeding programs for the development of early maturing cultivars.

K deficiency was identified for the first time in British Columbia orchard soils. Greenhouse-grown apple seedlings responded to K in soils low in available K. MacSpur McIntosh (Malus domestica Borkh.) had increased leaf K (above deficiency) and improved initial fruiting after surface applications of KCl in an orchard with low soil K.
