Social Media in Lives of Parents and Children: Exploring Effects on Parents-Children Relationships

Social media and its usage are one of the essential activities of this century. Many social media sites are there in the world, and they have millions of users. This research aims to explore the effects of social media usage on parents and children interpersonal relationships. Relationships among parents and children are an essential factor in having excellent bonding of family. The total numbers of respondents were 384, who were selected according to Morgan and Krejcie’sformula. Islamabad was the city where the survey was conducted. Probability sampling was used for this study. The study was based on the theory of Time displacement by Robert Putnam (1970). He argued that when we give more time to our virtual world, our time to our real-world will be less. Two hundred children and 184 parents were the respondents of this study. Results showed that most of the users are heavy users; they use social media more than 4 hours on a daily basis. The outcome revealed that Facebook is much admired social media site among users. According to results, 65% of respondents elaborated that social media unite families, and the rest of 35% said that they are against this statement. Furthermore, 73% of the total population responded that social media decreased face-to-face interaction between parents and children. On the other hand, 14% were neutral, and 11% were against this statement. According to results of hypothesis it has been found that both parents and children support positive aspects of social media usage. This study also finds out that heavy social media usage causes many troubles like sleeplessness, interest in the virtual world, and face-to-face interaction between children and parents. This study recommends the less usage of the virtual world and social sites to make strong relations in real life.

Increased access and the convenience of participation to and through the internet encourage connectivity among citizens. These new and enhanced connections are no longer dependent on real-life, face-to-face interactions, and are less restricted by the boundaries of time and space (Frissen, 2005). In this chapter, two cases from the Philippines are documented and assessed in order to look at online citizen engagement. The first case looks at how people participate in promoting tourism in the Philippines through social media. The second case involves their use of social media for disaster response. Previous studies on ICTs and participation in the Philippines have looked at the role of intermediaries (see Alampay, 2002). Since then, the role of social media, in particular that of Facebook and Twitter, has grown dramatically and at times completely circumvents traditional notions of intermediation. The role of Facebook, in particular, will be highlighted in this chapter, and the authors will analyze its effectiveness, vis-à-vis traditional government channels for communication and delivery of similar services. By looking at these two cases and assessing the abovementioned aspects, it is hoped that the use of social media can be seen as an integral part of e-governance especially in engaging citizens to participate in local and national governance.

The literature on social connectedness through mobile phone engagement reveals positive tacit opportunities. Mobile phone engagement hosts micro and macro opportunities to start and maintain a sense of social connectedness. Increasing a sense of social connectedness encourages healthier emotional wellbeing among people, reducing potential feelings of isolation and chances of faster recovery from illness. Mobile social media access, participation, and messaging, be it face-to-face, peer-to-peer, group, or virtual, through intentional and unintentional social connectedness, may aid the improvement and performance among workers, students, and campaigns. Mobile engagement also offers possible improvement in performance and enhanced perceptions of emotional wellbeing. Engagement through social media networks, mostly accessed via mobile, including mobile gaming, or health monitoring, commenting or posting photos or short texts, increases the production and value of successful maintenance of reciprocal interpersonal relationships.

Virtual worlds became an appealing and fascinating component of today's internet. In particular, the number of educational providers that see a potential for E-Learning in such new platforms increases. Unfortunately, most of the environments and processes implemented up to now do not exceed a virtual modelling of real-world scenarios. In particular, this paper shows that Second Life can be more than just another learning platform. A flexible and bidirectional link between the reality and the virtual world enables synchronous and seamless interaction between users and devices across both worlds. The primary advantages of this interconnection are a spatial extension of face-to-face and online learning scenarios and a closer relationship between virtual learners and the real world.

The study is titled " Virtual Interaction of Teen on Social Media". The purpose of this study was to find out the meaning of Facebook social media for adolescents as a medium of communication in the virtual world, how teenagers express themselves through social media and show the symbol of virtual interacting contemporary teen-age.  The theory in this study is the symbolic interaction with the methodology of virtual ethnography. Techniques of determining informants using snowball technique that is through the recommendation of facebook users among adolescents aged 15-18 Years in Cilegon City. Data collection techniques are done by direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. While virtual ethnographic observations are done online and offline. Online observations of researchers interact with resource persons in social media, offline researchers face to face with sources. Triangulation of sources is used in the technique of data validity. The results of this study's first teenage interpreting Facebook as an entertainment, interaction and media interaction in the virtual world. Second, teenagers can express themselves through the status update activity with slang, upload photos with "contemporary" pose and intensity of interaction by chatting to forget the time, and the dependence of updates in social media facebook.

ABSTRACT: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTENSITY OF INSTAGRAM SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE WITH SELF ESTEEM  Self-esteem is formed by interactions with other people. At present, social interaction can not only be done in the real world but can also be done in the virtual world, through social media such as Instagram. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. This research is a quantitative study with a correlational design. The sample in this study were 205 undergraduate students of Malahayati University, aged between 17 to 25 years. The data in this study were obtained using an Instagram social media intensity usage questionnaire and a self-esteem scale. The results of data analysis using Spearman's rho show that there is a significant positive relationship between intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. Keywords: Intensity of Social Media Usage, Instagram, Self Esteem Harga diri terbentuk dari interaksi dengan orang lain. Saat ini untuk melakukan interaksi sosial tidak hanya dapat dilakukan didunia nyata namun juga dapat dilakukan didunia maya, melalui media sosial seperti instagram. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 205 mahasiswa S1 Universitas Malahayati, berusia antara 17 sampai 25 tahun. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh menggunakan kuesioner intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dan skala harga diri. Hasil analisis data menggunakan Spearman’s rho menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Kata Kunci: Intensitas Penggunaan Media Sosial, Instagram, Harga Diri

Focused deterrence is a gang violence reduction strategy that relies on a unique mix of strong enforcement messages from law enforcement and judicial officials coupled with the promise of additional services. At the heart of the intervention is a coordinated effort to communicate the costs and consequences of gun violence to identified gang members during face-to-face meetings and additional community messaging. In Philadelphia, focused deterrence was implemented between 2013 and 2016, and although an impact evaluation showed a significant decrease in shootings in targeted areas relative to matched comparison neighborhoods, the effect on targeted gangs was not universal, with some exhibiting no change or an increase in gun-related activity. Here, we employ data on group-level social media usage and content to examine the correlations with gun violence. We find that several factors, including the nature of social media activity by the gang (e.g., extent of activity and who is engaging), are associated with increases in the average rate of gang-attributable shootings during the evaluation period, while content-specific variables (e.g., direct threats towards rivals and law enforcement) were not associated with increases in shootings. Implications for violence reduction policy, including the implementation of focused deterrence, are discussed.

Social media has become a platform for the daily exchange of information. Although some studies have explored the role and influence of social media on career development, few have examined how daily social media use impacts individuals’ perceptions and emotions regarding their careers. The present study examined this issue using two surveys. We predicted that social comparison would mediate the link between social media usage and its psychological impact. Moreover, we hypothesized that the impact would be mitigated by social interactions (companionship). Study 1 (a self-reported survey that included 309 Japanese employees) demonstrated that viewing other users’ positive posts about their careers could lead to career frustration through social comparison. Concurrently, this study revealed that daily casual interaction with others reduced career frustration. Study 2 was based on an analysis of 1,254 responses obtained from a 7-day experience sampling method survey. It revealed that viewing other people’s career-related posts was associated with upward, downward, and non-directional social comparison. In turn, upward social comparison evoked career frustration at both between- and within-person levels, while downward comparison decreased career frustration at a between-person level. Similar to Study 1, the results of Study 2 indicated that career frustration was mitigated by casual communication with others. Both studies provide evidence that (1) daily social media use affects one’s perception and feelings about their career through social comparison, and (2) career frustration evoked through virtual interactions with others is mitigated by casual interactions in a face-to-face setting.

Psychological well-being has become one of the crucial aspects of modern psychology. It has attracted not only psychologists but also medical practitioners in compliance with the mental health, emotions, depression, stress, etc. of the individual’s academic and social life. Right from the existence of behavioral sciences, efforts have been made by researchers of different disciplines to get a deep understanding of the various and different dimensions and correlates of psychological well-being. Social media platforms are an online association site where individuals cooperate to construct, offer and change their thought and remarks concerning any data. Over the past decade, online long distance social networking communication has brought significant changes in the way people communicate and collaborate. The study aimed to determine the impact of social media’s early health issues such as student depression and anxiety. A descriptive study was conducted among Tertiary level educated students in Visakhapatnam with a sample of 130 respondents. It included questions on demographical information, the pattern of social networking usage, social relationship, and health effects. Results: Present study results found that there is a significant association between time spent on social media and the number of social networking apps. There is a positive correlation between Depression feelings with serious active on social networking apps than in real life. Conclusion: This study concludes that more usage of social networking sites is affecting the Tertiary school student’s well-being such as depression and anxiety.

Abstract BackgroundPregnant and postpartum women face unique challenges and concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus far, no studies have explored the factors associated with increased levels of worry in this population globally. The current study sought to assess the frequency and sources of worry during the COVID-19 pandemic in an international sample of pregnant and postpartum women.MethodsWe conducted an anonymous, online, cross-sectional survey in 64 countries between May and June 2020. The survey was available in 12 languages and hosted on the Pregistry platform for COVID-19 studies. Participants were sought mainly on social media platforms and online parenting forums. The survey included questions related to demographics, level of worry, support, stress, COVID-19 exposure, frequency of media usage, and mental health indicators.ResultsThe study included 7,561 participants. Eighty-three percent of all participants indicated that they were either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ worried. Women 13-28 weeks pregnant were significantly more likely to indicate that they were ‘very worried’ compared to those who were postpartum or at other stages of pregnancy. When compared with women living in Europe, those in Africa, Asia and Pacific, North America and South/Latin America were more likely to have increased levels of worry, as were those who more frequently interacted with social media. Different forms of support and stress also had an impact upon level of worry, while indicators of stress and anxiety were positively associated with worry level.ConclusionPregnant and postpartum women are vulnerable to the changes in societal norms brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the factors associated with levels of worry within this population will enable society to address potential unmet needs and improve the current and future mental health of parents and children.

Generation Z is the generation that was born where internet technology already exists. The development of internet technology, especially digital social networks and wireless cellular devices, has fundamentally changed how Generation Z thinks in living life, both for communication, relationships, leadership, authority, and forming today's community. Therefore, digital social networks have profound implications for church ministry in the digital age. This study aims to propose the importance of social media as a teaching medium for Generation Z to build the spirituality of Generation Z in the digital era. The research method used in this paper is a literature study (library). Through this research study, it can be concluded that social media can be used as a sacred space and a tool to present a networked church, build and foster relationships with generation Z in the love of Christ. But real life or face-to-face with Generation Z is still important. Both virtual and real must be used in balance.AbstrakGenerasi Z adalah generasi yang lahir di mana teknologi internet sudah ada. Perkembangan teknologi internet, terutama jaringan sosial digital dan perangkat seluler nirkabel secara fundamental telah mengubah cara berpikir generasi Z dalam menjalani kehidupan, baik untuk komunikasi, hubungan, kepemimpinan, otoritas dan membentuk komunitas saat ini. Oleh karena itu, jaringan sosial digital sangat memiliki implikasi mendalam untuk pelayanan gereja di era digital. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengusulkan pentingnya media sosial sebagai media pengajaran bagi generasi Z guna membangun spiritualitas generasi Z dalam era digital. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah studi literatur (kepustakaan).  Melalui kajian penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa media sosial dapat dijadikan sebagai ruang sakral dan alat untuk menghadirkan gereja yang berjejaring, membangun dan membina hubungan dengan generasi Z dalam kasih Kristus. Namun kehidupan real atau tatap-muka bersama generasi Z adalah tetap penting. Baik virtual dan real harus digunakan secara balance.
