As online shopping growth continues, electronic retailers are recognizing the need to understand risk perceptions of (prospective) customers so as to remove impediments to continued growth. One particularly fruitful area of research concerns the perceptions of online shoppers to product, financial, privacy, time/inconvenience, psychological, and product source risk. Equally important is to understand differences in risk perceptions between males and females and also how such perceptions vary across different product types: digital (e.g. music), and non-digital (e.g. apparel). Utilizing an online survey of undergraduate college students, findings show that female respondents consistently perceived greater risk than males, with significant differences for product and financial risks for both product types. The “experiential” nature of apparel shopping was highlighted by online shopping intention being explained by psychological (male and females) and product (females) risk only. Overall, perceived risk was found to negatively influence intention to shop online by gender, especially with females.

E-commerce industry has witnessed a phenomenal growth globally due to the sudden spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the advancement of mobile Internet technology, with fast adaption of online shopping technologies by the customers. Previously, online shopping was only available in a few product categories and to a select group of consumers. The COVID-19 guidelines related to safety, physical distancing, closure, lockdown, and other restrictions have insisted that consumers shop online. Because of e-commerce growth, the grocery (FMCG) industry is also equipped with advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and block chain technology. This paper analyzes the UTAUT2 model and its influence on perceived risk and consumer trust in online purchase intention of grocery categories of products among Indian customers. We tried to analyze the growth potential of new technologies in grocery retail and formulated the hypotheses. The results showed that the spread of COVID-19 pandemic had a significant influence on the online shopping behavior of Indian customers. The outcome of the study partly assists businesses in understanding the impact of the factors of consumer adaption of technology, perceived risk associated with online transaction, consumer trust in online technologies and consumer online purchase intention of grocery products. To promote e-commerce in India, the current study suggests that marketers should try to develop consumer trust and lowering the perceived risk associated with online shopping. Some management implications and future area of study based on empirical findings are also highlighted in the present research work.

The purpose of this chapter is to offer a better understanding of online shoppers' behaviour, so that virtual shops may improve and adapt their product offering to effectively reach their target segments. In order to achieve this goal, a characterization of motivations to shop online is proposed as a basis for motivation-based customer segmentation. Building upon this segmentation, acceptance models—namely, an adaptation of UTAUT2 to e-commerce—have been used to look further into the purchasing behavior of each identified segment. The results from the empirical study based on responses to an online questionnaire from a sample of 718 Spanish shoppers shows seven different groups of motivations and five different customer segments, and confirms different behavioral patterns in the adoption of e-commerce for different segments of customers, with special influence of effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and perceived risk in the online shopping behaviour of individuals.

Through a review of the literature, this chapter focuses on three key influences on purchase behavior on the Internet: product, consumer, and retailer factors. Product characteristics and branding not only influence many consumer-related factors (e.g., the need to handle the product and risk perceptions), but also affect retailers’ strategic and tactical online decisions (e.g., the balance between off-line and online retail provision and the breadth and depth of products and brands selection). This chapter also examines how consumer-related factors (e.g., consumers’ expertise, attitudes toward the Internet, and shopping orientation) affect online purchasing and the implications for e-retailers. Finally, the chapter discusses how e-retailers marketing efforts (retailer factors) can be used to overcome the barriers to Web purchasing resulting from specific product and consumer related characteristics. Clear and easy to implement recommendations to managers are offered.

An increase in e-commerce activity has both positive and negative consequences for consumers. The ease with which experienced online shoppers can access a broad assortment of goods and services are likely to contribute to compulsive buying behavior is an example of this. Although researchers have examined factors related to offline compulsive buying, little is known about online compulsive buying behavior. This study examines the influence of perceived skill and knowledge, facilitating conditions, attitude toward online shopping, and actual online purchasing behavior on the tendency to engage in compulsive buying online. The moderating effect of self-esteem is examined as well. As expected, active online shopping coupled with low esteem may potentially lead to a tendency to engage in compulsive online shopping.
