Dryland areas account for 48% of area under food crop and 52% under non-food crop cultivation and contribute about 42% of total food grain production in India. Drought is the predominant weather extreme influencing the socio-economic structure of not only dry land regions but also the entire country. Various drought monitoring techniques and mechanisms aim at mitigating the drought impacts at different spatial scales. They are discussed briefly here with strategies to cope up this weather anomaly at different time scales. Dry land districts that are prone to frequent hail episodes are identified and measures to minimize damage to agriculture are also discussed.

On 2 October 1952, marking Gandhi's fourth birth anniversary after his assassination in 1948, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of postcolonial India, launched the Community Development (CD) Programs. Dedicating the programs to Gandhi's memory allowed Nehru to claim symbolic legitimacy for them. At the same time, this centerpiece of Nehruvian policy in the Indian countryside was heavily interventionist, billed as “the method ... through which the [state] seeks to bring about social and economic transformation in India's villages” (Government of India 1952). In its heyday, CD preoccupied the Planning Commission, was linked to the office of the Prime Minister, had a ministry dedicated to it, and formed part of the domain of action of the rapidly proliferating state and other development agencies. Fifteen pilot projects, each covering 300 villages, were launched in all the major states. Planning documents of the day register high enthusiasm and optimism for these programs. However, by the mid-1960s, barely a decade after the fanfare of its launch, the tone of planners toward CD turned first despairing and then oppositional. They called for abandonment of its ambitious aim of the total development of Indian villages in favor of more focused interventions to achieve a rapid increase in food-grain production.

This study aimed to analyze the compatibility between the land cover spatial pattern plan and determine the direction of land use in the event of a discrepancy. This research was conducted on the Kelara Upstream Watershed located in gowa and jeneponto using land cover maps generated from landsat imagery interpretation 8. Then overlay to map the spatial pattern plan. Then determined the order of land use is done when there is a discrepancy between the results of the overlay with maps of land cover spatial pattern plan. The result showed that 41,05% of the total area of the Kelara Upstream Watershed of 28.185,68 ha a land use form of a orchards. After overlay discovered discrepancy land cover maps with maps of spatial pattern plan. Based on a map spatial pattern plan that should in reality the field is man made forest, orchards, dryland agriculture and rice field. According to these condition the specified order of land use that is Hkm (Community Forest) with agroforestry and Agroforestry Systems. Rice field In the Protected and Production forest order to intensification land use and plantations forest, orchards and dry land agriculture order to Community Forest with agroforestry systems . In the area of cultivation the land use rice field, orchards and dryland agriculture order to agroforestry systems.

This study explored historical food availability/supply and the market demand for food. Secondary data was used for analyzing demand-supply gap. The average growth in rice production was 2.9% per year in 1971/72 to 2008/09, of which 93% was contributed by yield growth. The overall growth rate of area under food grain was 0.3% in 1971/72 to 2008/09. The overall food grain production growth rate is higher than population growth rate from 1971/72 to 2008/09. The own price and income elasticities of rice were -0.108 and 0.199 respectively. It was projected that upto 2021, the annual demand for food exceed the supply of food which were -0.28% for rice and -1.76% for wheat. The Presented study is an attempt to examine the trend and instability in area, production and productivity of food grain crops in Haryana and India during period 1966-67 to 2012-13 and five sub periods i.e. P-I (1966-67 to 1975-76), P-II (1976-77 to 1985-86), P-III (1986-87 to 1995-96), P-IV (1996-97 to 2005-06) and  P-V (2006-07 to 2012-13). The study is based on secondary data. The study reveals positive trends in area, production and yield of food grains for both Haryana and India. Production in Haryana and India increased mainly due to increase in yield. Similar results have been obtained on triennium bases. In Haryana, area, production and yield have shown positive growth rates in all the periods and the overall period except for area in Period-III, IV and V. In the case of India positive growth rates has obtained for production and yield of food grains while area has shown negative trend in Periods III, IV, V and entire period under study. The coefficient of variation (C.V.) in respect of the three components i.e. area, production and productivity of total food grains found to be higher in Haryana as compared to India in all the periods and the overall period except for yield in period-III, yield and production in period-IV and yield in Period-V. Similar results have been obtained for the instability indices.

Abstract. Ozone (O3) plays a significant role in weather and climate on regional to global spatial scales. Most studies on the variability in the total column of O3 (TCO) are typically carried out using daytime data. Based on knowledge of the chemistry and transport of O3, significant deviations between daytime and night-time O3 are only expected either in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) or high in the stratosphere or mesosphere, with little effect on the TCO. Hence, we expect the daytime and night-time TCO to be very similar. However, a detailed evaluation of satellite measurements of daytime and night-time TCO is still lacking, despite the existence of long-term records of both. Thus, comparing daytime and night-time TCOs provides a novel approach to verifying the retrieval algorithms of instruments such as the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS). In addition, such a comparison also helps to assess the value of night-time TCO for scientific research. Applying this verification on the AIRS and the MLS data, we identified inconsistencies in observations of O3 from both satellite instruments. For AIRS, daytime–night-time differences were found over oceans resembling cloud cover patterns and over land, mostly over dry land areas, which is likely related to infrared surface emissivity. These differences point to issues with the representation of both processes in the AIRS retrieval algorithm. For MLS, a major issue was identified with the “ascending–descending” orbit flag, used to discriminate night-time and daytime MLS measurements. Disregarding this issue, MLS day–night differences were significantly smaller than AIRS day–night differences, providing additional support for the retrieval method origin of AIRS in stratospheric column ozone (SCO) day–night differences. MLS day–night differences are dominated by the upper-stratospheric and mesospheric diurnal O3 cycle. These results provide useful information for improving infrared O3 products.
