The purpose of this study was to analyze prior seed disinfestation of irrigated rice seeds with sodium hypochlorite and its effect on physiological quality. The experiment was conducted in the seed analysis laboratory of Santa Catarina State University (UDESC). Twenty-four (four per cultivar) seed lots of the cultivars SCSBRS Tio Taka, Epagri 109, SCS116 Satoru, SCS118 Marquês, SCS121 CL, and SCS122 Miura, produced in the Upper Itajaí Valley in the 2016/2017 season, were used in a completely randomized experimental design with four replications. Germination and vigor tests were performed with and without disinfestation seeds. For the germination test with disinfected seeds, there was a higher percentage of normal seedlings and a smaller number of abnormal seedlings and dead seeds. There was significant decrease in vigor without prior seed disinfestation. The fungi that infested the seeds caused an increase in the percentage of abnormal seedlings and dead seeds. Seed disinfestation prior to physiological test positively affects the results regarding the physiological quality of irrigated rice seeds.

The objective of this study was to assess physiological quality of seeds and the initial growth of lowland rice seedlings, cv. PUITA INTA-CL, treated with a product based on Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum. The following dosages of product were used: 0 (control), 50, 100, 150 and 200 mL.100 kg-1 seed. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with 10 treatments and four replications. Physiological quality of seeds was assessed by following tests: germination; first count of germination; and length and dry phytomass of seedlings. The initial growth was assessed at 7, 14, 21, 35, and 42 days after emergence (DAE) through plant height, leaf area and dry phytomass of aerial parts and roots. It was concluded that the treatment of rice seeds with the product containing Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum up to the dosage tested of 200 mL.100 kg-1 seed does not influence germination, first count of germination, and the dry phytomass of aerial parts and roots; however, negatively influences seedling length. In addition, it also promotes greater plant height, higher leaf area, higher production of dry phytomass of seedlings, and increase on the growth rate, until 42 DAE.

Background: Among stone fruit, the peach (Prunus persica (L) Batsch) is one of the most widely grown species in Brazil, in both area cultivated and in production. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of heavy and light seeds of four cultivars of Prunus persica for two storage periods, from tests of electrical conductivity, germination, and an analysis of initial plantlets growth. Methods: The Electrical Conductivity test (EC) was conducted in a Completely Randomised Design (CRD), in a 4 x 2 x 5 factorial scheme with five replications. The germination test was carried out in CRD, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme with eight replications. The physiological quality of the seeds was determined at zero and twelve month’s storage. For the growth analysis, the experimental design was in CRD, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme with four replications. Results: Under the conditions of the present study, it was found that the tests of germination and electrical conductivity were complementary in evaluating physiological quality in seeds of Prunus persica rootstock, suggesting that independent of the weight of the seeds, in ‘Capdeboscq’, ‘Aldrighi’, ‘Okinawa’ and ‘Okinawa Roxo’, there is a loss of quality and viability when the seeds are stored for a period of 12 months. Conclusion: Under the experimental conditions of the present study, it was concluded that storage for a period of 12 months in Recent patents is not rather recommendable for maintaining quality and viability in seeds of Prunus persica of the Capdeboscq, Aldrighi, Okinawa and Okinawa Roxo cultivars.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg-1). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a pH test of the exudate (with and without tegument) as an indicator of the physiological quality of rice seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, with seven lots and four replications. The seven lots were assessed for water content and initial physiological quality by means of germination, first germination count, emergence, emergence speed index and tetrazolium tests. The pH test of the exudate was conducted with 100 seeds of each treatment, with tegument and without tegument. The seeds were individually soaked in 2.0 mL distilled water for different periods (20, 40, and 60 minutes) and three temperatures (20, 25, and 30 °C). The results were submitted to the Scott Knott test at 5% probability. The pH test of the exudate is a promising method to evaluate the physiological quality of rice seeds by detecting differences in vigor between marketable lots. This test should be conducted with rice seed without tegument, at 25 °C, with a soak time of 60 minutes.

Abstract: Seeds storing under appropriate conditions reduces the speed of the seeds deterioration process. The aim of this study was to evaluate pre-packing cooling and types of packages in the maintenance of the physiological quality of soybean seeds during storage. The completely randomized experimental design was used, with four replications, considering a factorial arrangement involving or not the pre-packing cooling of the seed mass, three types of packages (multi-layer paper bag, big bag, and polyethylene container), and five storing periods (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 months). The physiological quality was evaluated by the tests of first germination count, germination, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index and emergence. The use of packages with larger amount of seeds (big bag and polyethylene container) did not favor the maintenance of the pre-packing cooling temperature. The types of packages did not show significant differences in the seeds viability during storage, up to eight months, regardless the pre-packing cooling. The cultivars seeds showed different tolerance to storing, i.e. seeds of the cultivar TMG 1176 had lower storing potential comparing to the seeds from the cultivar SYN 9074.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the of common bean seeds coating with different doses of Si, supplied by the carbonized rice hulls, in its physic, physiologic and sanitary attributes, as well determine the amount of this element absorbed in plants. The experiment was conducted in Laboratory of Seed Analysis belonging to the Universidade Federal de Pelotas-Brazil, during the crop season 2014/2015. For this, common bean seeds of cultivar BRS Expedito were treated at doses of 0, 45, 90, 135 and 180 grams of Si 100 kg-1 of seeds, using a completely randomized experimental design with four replicates The use of different doses of carbonized rice hulls in the seed coat does not alter the physical quality and does not negatively affect the physiological quality of the seeds. Crescent doses of carbonized rice hulls up to 101 g of Si 100 kg-1 of seeds increase the seedlings vigor evaluated by the total dry mass and length of shoot at 21 days after seeding, as well as the Si amount in roots. The root dry mass at 21 days after seeding presents growth reduction with the increase of doses until 104 g of Si 100 kg-1 of seeds, although, without compromising the shoot development and the element accumulation. The different Si doses supplied by the carbonized rice hulls do not control pathogens associated to seeds.

The acquisition of high-quality seeds is essential to successfully implant areas with forage. However, to be commercialized, they must meet the minimum quality standards established by law. Inspections are necessary to guarantee the quality and identity of the commercialized seed. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the quality of tropical forage seed species collected in 2018, in the state of Mato Grosso. The survey was based on data from officers’ samples, in commercial establishments and fine consumers, collected during inspections conducted by the Agricultural Defense Institute of the State of Mato Grosso - INDEA-MT and subsequently analyzed by the Guilherme de Abreu Lima Seed Analysis Laboratory (LASGAL). Purity analysis, determination of other seeds by number (DOSN), germination test and tetrazolium test were carried out. The study showed that 75% of the analyzed samples reached the minimum requirements for commercialization in terms of physical purity; 95% of the samples were within the standard for physiological quality determined by law; and 91.9% did not exceed the maximum limits regarding the number of undesirable seeds present in a sample. In general, 36.1% of the total samples analyzed did not conform in some way to quality standards, therefore were not appropriate for commercialization.

The electrical conductivity test is routinely used to differentiate the physiological quality of seed lots, and has stood out for its ease of execution, low cost, speed, repeatability, and straightforward interpretation of results. This study aimed to establish a methodology for the electrical conductivity test in pea seeds (Pisum sativum L.) involving seed quantity and seed imbibition periods. The experiment was carried out at the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of the State University of Goiás, the campus of Ipameri Campus, in 2018. Pea seeds (Pisum sativum) stored in the seed laboratory of the same institution were used for this experiment. The completely randomized experimental design with four replications in a 4x6 factorial scheme was used. Four quantity of seeds (25, 50, 75, and 100 seeds) and six imbibition periods (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h) at 25ºC were evaluated. The electrical conductivity test was performed with four replicates of 25, 50, 75, and 100 seeds each, weighed on a precision scale (0.001g) and placed in disposable plastic cups, with a capacity of 200 mL, containing 75 mL of distilled water. The cups were then kept in a BOD chamber, set at 25°C, and the measuring was performed after 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h of imbibition with a conductivity meter and results were expressed in μS cm-1 g-1. There were no significant results for the interaction between the number of seeds and the imbibition time. Significant results were observed only for the individual effects of each factor. It is recommended to use 100 seeds of Maria pea, and 24 h for the electrical conductivity test.

"Angico-vermelho" [Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan] is an arboreal forestal species native from Brazil used for rural constructions, firewood, charcoal, and forest restoration programs; however it is little studied in regard to seed technology. Thus, the objective of this study was assessing different substrates for conducting tests of germination and physiological quality of seeds stored under different environments and packings for 420 days. Firstly, the most suitable substrate for the germination test was identified and subsequently the seeds were stored into three different types of packings (paper, plastic and glass) and three different environmental conditions (cold chamber, refrigerator and laboratory). Seed samples from each storage condition were removed at every 60 days for evaluating moisture content, germination and vigor (electrical conductivity test). A completely randomized experimental design was used with treatments arranged into a split-plot design for storage periods. It was found that the germination test can be conducted using between the sand as substrate, with the first count of emergence of seedlings performed at the fourth day and the final counting at 10 days after seeding. That seeds can be stored preferably in refrigerator into paper packings, although packings of plastic and/or glass are also suitable.
