This article explores the spatial dynamics of agrofuels. Building on categories from the field of critical spatial theory, it shows how these categories enable a comprehensive analysis of the spatial dynamics of agrofuels that links the macro-structures of the global political economy to concrete, place-based struggles. Four core socio-spatial dynamics of agrofuel politics are highlighted and applied to empirical findings: territorialization, the financial sector as a new scale of regulation, place-based struggles and transnational spaces of resources and capital flows.

A planície costeira brasileira, em especial a do Nordeste do Brasil, apresenta um sistema morfológico que sofre diversas pressões do ponto de vista do uso e ocupação dos seus espaços. Logo, o entendimento da dinâmica natural e espacial desse ambiente requer a adoção de metodologias que contemplem uma abordagem em múltiplas escalas. Neste sentido, este trabalho tem o intuito de analisar as múltiplas morfologias associadas a praia das Fontes, em Beberibe-CE, em diferentes escalas taxonômicas. Esta análise auxiliou na realização de um prognostico das condições ambientais e de sua capacidade de suporte. Metodologicamente aplicou-se a proposta de Bertrand (1971), adotando-se apenas as unidades inferiores que inclui os níveis taxonômicos regionais e/ou locais, compreendendo os geossistemas, geofáciese os geótopos. Os resultados alcançados foram satisfatórios, uma vez que as unidades mapeadas foram validadas em atividades de campo para reconhecimento do produto cartográfico.Palavras-chave: Análise Multiescalar. Formação Barreiras. ABSTRACTThe Brazilian coastal plain, especially in the Northeast of Brazil, presents a morphological system that undergoes several pressures from the point of view of the use and occupation of its spaces. Disentangling the spatial-temporal dynamics of infectious disease transmission is important to address issues of disease persistence, epidemic growth and optimal control. In this chapter, we review key concepts relating to the spatial-temporal dynamics of infectious diseases in meta-populations, whereby geographically separate subpopulations are connected by migration or mobility rates. We review the dynamics of colonization, persistence and extinction of emerging and recurrent pathogens in meta-populations; the role of demographic and environmental factors; and geographic heterogeneity in epidemic growth rate. We illustrate theoretical concepts by reviewing the spatial dynamics of childhood diseases and other acute infections in low- and middle-income countries, and provide a detailed description of the spatial-temporal dynamics of the 2014–16 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. We further discuss how increased availability of empirical data and recent methodological developments provide a deeper mechanistic understanding of transmission processes in space and time, and make recommendations for future work.


Robert May's seminal book has played a central role in the development of ecological science. Originally published in 1976, this influential text has overseen the transition of ecology from an observational and descriptive subject to one with a solid conceptual core. Indeed, it is a testament to its influence that a great deal of the novel material presented in the earlier editions has now been incorporated into standard undergraduate textbooks. It is now a quarter of a century since the publication of the second edition, and a thorough revision is timely. Theoretical Ecology provides a succinct, up-to-date overview of the field set in the context of applications, thereby bridging the traditional division of theory and practice. It describes the recent advances in our understanding of how interacting populations of plants and animals change over time and space, in response to natural or human-created disturbance. Later chapters outline applications of these ideas to practical issues including fisheries, infectious diseases, tomorrow's food supplies, climate change, and conservation biology. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on questions which as yet remain unanswered. The editors have invited the top scientists in the field to collaborate with the next generation of theoretical ecologists. The result is an accessible, advanced textbook suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students as well as researchers in the fields of ecology, mathematical biology, environmental and resources management. It will also be of interest to the general reader seeking a better understanding of a range of global environmental problems.
