Due to the shrinking of the industrial equipment, the heat transfer and cooling of these devices are ofparticular importance. Therefore, this paper studies fluid flow and heat transfer in a micro-channel. Inthis study three-dimensional laminar numerical simulations, based on the Navier–Stokes equations andenergy equation, are obtained for pressure drop and heat transfer in these micro-channel heat sinksunder the same conditions. In this article, the first step is to investigate the effect of channel shape andgeometry on the heat transfer and pressure drop in micro-channels. In, the second step, the effect ofundefined heat flux and distinct input condition is investigated, and third step, the effect of increasingthe number of channels is checked to do an ideal form of heat transfer in a micro-channel. According tothe results, heat transfer using a hexagonal micro-channel is improved 20% on the rectangular microchannel(with equal hydraulic diameter).

In this paper, a numerical simulation is carried to study pressure drop and heat transfer in a fractal tree-like microchannel net heat sink of 10mm×12.5mm×0.5mm in dimensions. The numerical result is obtained by solving three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation, taking into consideration conjugate heat transfer in the microchannel walls. A comparison of fractal tree-like microchannel net heat sink with 6 branch levels to parallel microchannels heat sink, with respect to the pressure drop, thermal resistance and temperature uniformity, was also performed under the condition of the same heat sink dimensions. The results indicates that for a mass flow rate of water less than 0.00175kg/s, the fractal tree-like microchannel is much better than parallel channel heat sink with respect to all of three aspects. Therefore, the fractal tree-like microchannels net heat sink using water as the coolant is promising to be used in the future electronic cooling industry.

The pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of heat sinks with circular micro-channels are investigated using the continuum model consisting of the conventional Navier-Stokes equations and the conventional energy equation. Developing flow (both hydrodynamically and thermally) is assumed in the fluid region and three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer is assumed in the solid region. Thermal results based on this approach are shown to be in good agreement with existing experimental data. Numerical results obtained for heat sinks with various geometries indicate that the heat absorbed by the fluid per unit length is high at the inlet and decreases steadily in the flow direction. As a result, the bulk temperature increases at a higher rate near the inlet. The geometry of the heat sink is shown to have a significant effect on the overall thermal resistance.

One numerical method was designed to solve the time-dependent, three-dimensional, incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in turbulent thermal channel flows. Its originality lies in the use of several well-known methods to discretize the problem and its parallel nature. Vorticy-Laplacian of velocity formulation has been used, so pressure has been removed from the system. Heat is modeled as a passive scalar. Any other quantity modeled as passive scalar can be very easily studied, including several of them at the same time. These methods have been successfully used for extensive direct numerical simulations of passive thermal flow for several boundary conditions.

Knowledge of flow pattern and flow pattern transitions is essential to the development of reliable predictive tools for pressure drop and heat transfer in two-phase micro-channel heat sinks. In the present study, experiments were conducted with adiabatic nitrogen-water two-phase flow in a rectangular micro-channel having a 0.406 × 2.032 mm cross-section. Superficial velocities of nitrogen and water ranged from 0.08 to 81.92 m/s and 0.04 to 10.24 m/s, respectively. Flow patterns were first identified using high-speed video imaging, and still photos were then taken for representative patterns. Results reveal that the dominant flow patterns are slug and annular, with bubbly flow occurring only occasionally; stratified and churn flow were never observed. A flow pattern map was constructed and compared with previous maps and predictions of flow pattern transition models. Annual flow is identified as the dominant flow pattern for conditions relevant to two-phase micro-channel heat sinks, and forms the basis for development of a theoretical model for both pressure drop and heat transfer in micro-channels. Features unique to two-phase micro-channel flow, such as laminar liquid and gas flows, smooth liquid-gas interface, and strong entrainment and deposition effects are incorporated into the model. The model shows good agreement with experimental data for water-cooled heat sinks.

Abstract Unsteady flow dynamics in a doubly constricted vessel is analyzed by using a time accurate Finite Volume solution of three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Computational experiments are carried out for various values of Reynolds number in order to assess the criticality of multiple mild constrictions in series and also to bring out the subtle 3D features like vortex formation. Studies reveal that pressure drop across a series of mild constrictions can get physiologically critical. Further this pressure drop is found to be sensitive to the spacing between the constrictions and also to the oscillatory nature of the inflow profile.

Fluid flow phenomena in micro channels received wide attention due to its high heat transfer coefficient. As a new technique in the field of micro channel phase-change heat transfer, anti-gravity flow can drive fluid flow by capillary force and create enhanced evaporation heat transfer conditions by promoting the formation of an extended meniscus in the three-phase contact-line region. Resulting from the circumferential discrepancy of degree of superheat, the radius of curvature of intrinsic meniscus decreases rapidly as liquid rising up, leading to the formation of capillary pressure gradient. With the increase of heat flux, subcooled boiling occurs and micro-bubble appears at the bottom of the fluted tube. Under the action of buoyancy and drag force, the bubble rises along the channel and at the same time grows continually for the presence of superheat until its break. This paper focuses on the numerical study of flow characteristics of anti-gravity flow in the micro channel and the influence of bubble under the subcooled boiling circumstance. The results shows that bubble plays a positive role in the formation of anti-gravity flow and the analytical expressions are presented for the rising velocity of liquid, the contact angle and the curvature of the intrinsic meniscus, which are all influenced by heat flux, superheat temperature and the geometric parameters of the channel.

In this article, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method is used to predict the effect of blade numbers on the pressure drop of axial cyclone separators. A three-dimensional model is built to acquire the resistance of axial cyclone separators with different blade numbers. The flow field inside cyclone separators is calculated using 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. And turbulence model is used to simulate the Reynold stress. Also pressure drop of cyclone separators with different blade numbers is expressed as a function of different inlet velocities. At the same inlet velocity with increasing the blade numbers, pressure drops of cyclones reduce greatly. And changing the blade number of cyclone separator is an effective method to improve its resistance performance.

Efficient cooling techniques are one of the critical design requirements for maintaining reliable operational characteristics of modern, miniaturised high performance electronic components. Microchannel heat sinks form an integral part of most devices used for thermal management in electronic equipment cooling. A microchannel of square cross section, having internal longitudinal fins is considered for analysis. A numerical study is carried out to investigate the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed on the microchannel in the presence of a hydrodynamically developed, thermally developing laminar flow. Further on, a thermodynamic analysis is carried out, for a range of fin heights and thermophysical parameters, in order to obtain the irreversibilities due to heat transfer and fluid flow within the microchannel. An optimum fin height, corresponding to the thermodynamically optimum conditions that minimize the entropy generation rates has been obtained. The effect of the presence of internal fins on the entropy generated due to heat transfer, fluid friction, and the total entropy generation is also provided.

A three-dimensional computational model is developed to analyze fluid flow in a semi-porous channel. In order to understand the developing fluid flow and heat transfer process inside the semi-porous channels, the conventional Navier-Stokes equations for gas channel, and volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for porous media layer are adopted individually in this study. Conservation of mass, momentum and energy equations are solved numerically in a coupled gas and porous media domain in a channel using the vorticity-velocity method with power law scheme. Detailed development of axial velocity, secondary flow and temperature fields at various axial positions in the entrance region are presented. The friction factor and Nusselt number are presented as a function of axial position, and the effects of the size of porous media inside semi-porous channel are also analyzed in the present study.
