A field experiment was carried out on silty clay loam soil, acidic in reaction, high in available phosphorus, medium in available potassium and low in available N during kharif 2017 at the Research Farm of Department of Agronomy, CSKHPKV, Palampur to study effective weed control strategy for this important crop. The results revealed that Alternanthera philoxeroides was the major weed constituting 16% of the total weed flora. This was followed by Cynodon dactylon and Echinochloa colona with 14 and 12% of total weed population, respectively. The count of Echinochloa colona, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Commelina benghalensis, Digitaria sanguinalis and Ageratum conyzoides was maximum at 120 DAP and there after it gradually decreased. All herbicide treatments brought significant reduction in the count on Echinochloa, Alternanthera and Ageratum over weedy check. The lowest count of these weeds was recorded in metribuzin fb straw mulch fb hand weeding and the maximum count was in case of weedy check. All the weed control treatments significantly reduced the total weed count and dry weight of weeds as compared to the weedy check. Amongst different herbicide treatments application of metribuzin @ 0.70 kg/ha fb straw mulch fb hand weeding resulted in significantly lowest weed count at all stages of observation as well as at harvest though this treatment was at par with metribuzin @ 0.70 kg/ha fb two hand weedings and treatments in which atrazine 0.75 kg/ha and hand weedings were applied with or without the use of straw mulch resulted in significantly lower dry matter accumulation by weeds as compared to other herbicide treatments. Weed index calculated at 120 DAP was highest with use of metribuzin @ 0.70 kg/ha and atrazine @ 0.75 kg/ha used along with straw mulch and one or two hand weedings proving effective as compared to other herbicides tested. From the present study it seems that mulching must be included in any effective weed management strategy for turmeric. Also among different herbicides metribuzin and atrazine are effective and their integration with mulching and/or hand weeding gave good control of weeds in turmeric.

En la Península Ibérica se había observado con anterioridad en Galicia (A Coruña, en el año 2015), Cataluña (Barcelona, 2017) y Andalucía (Sevilla, 2021). Dado su potencial expansivo y difícil erradicación una vez extendida, convendría evaluar su distribución en Navarra para establecer medidas de control.

Aquatic herbicides are one of the most effective and widespread ways to manage nuisance vegetation in the US After the active ingredient is selected, often there are numerous proprietary and generic branded products to select from. To date, limited efforts have been made to compare the efficacy of brand name and generic herbicides head to head; therefore, at tot al of 20 mesocosm trials were conducted to evaluate various 2,4 -D, glyphosate, imazapyr, and triclopyr products against alligatorweed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.), southern cattail (hereafter referred to as cattail, Typha domingensis Pers.), and creeping water primrose (hereafter referred as primrose, Ludwigia peploides (Kunth) P.H. Raven). All active ingredients were applied to foliage at broadcast rates commonly used in applications to public waters. Proprietary and generic 2,4 -D, glyphosate, imazapyr, and triclopyr were efficacious and provided 39 to 99% control of alligatorweed, cattail and primrose in 19 of the 20 trials. There were no significant differences i n product performance except glyphosate vs. alligatorweed (trial 1, Rodeo vs. Roundup Custom) and glyphosate vs. cattail (trial 1, Rodeo vs. Glyphosate 5.4). These results demonstrate under small -scale conditions, the majority of the generic and proprietary herbicides provided similar control of emergent vegetation, regardless of active ingredient

Phenological differences between invading plants and members of recipient communities may increase the success of invaders because of priority effects. Thus, the application of management when the invader has a phenological advantage (for example, early in the year) can benefit other species by increasing resource availability. This technical note summarizes results from a combination of field observations and a mesocosm experiment to explore whether phenological differences between the invasive wetland plant, alligatorweed (Alternanthera philoxeroides [Mart.] Grseb.), and resident species contribute to alligatorweed success. We documented over two years the early-season growth of alligatorweed and other species at 12 sites in Louisiana, USA. We then conducted a subsequent mesocosm competition experiment between alligatorweed and a common wetland emergent species, spotted lady’s thumb (Persicaria maculosa [L.] Small), over a full year to detect differences in timing of growth and competitive interactions under two fertilizer levels.

To investigate the growth and feeding conditions of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis under different feeding modes: traditional (mainly consisting of wheat, bran, and soybean meal), formulated, and mixed feeds (1:1 mixture of traditional and formulated feeds) were fed in different crab breeding ponds in this study. During the experiment, the stomach contents of juvenile crabs under the different feeding modes were collected. The main potential eukaryotic food components were studied using 18S ribosomal DNA sequencing, and the contribution of different feeding modes to the feeding source of juvenile crabs were analyzed using C and N stable isotopes. The terminal weight and weight gain rate of crabs under the formulated feeding mode were significantly higher than those in the traditional and mixed feeding modes (P < 0.05). No differences were observed in the diversity and abundance of the main potential eukaryotic feed components of male and female crabs under different feeding modes (P > 0.05). Thirty-four phyla, composed mainly of benthic organisms, were identified, with Arthropoda (mainly including Malacostraca, 30.25–51.48%), Phragmoplastophyta (mainly including Embryophyta and Trebouxiophyceae, 5.08–24.74%), and Diatomea (3.13–8.43%) being the most abundant. The δ13C and δ15N values of the feeding sources and muscle of crabs ranged from −34.45 to −22.21‰, and from 0.27 to 5.66‰, respectively, varying greatly among the three feeding modes and δ15N value of muscle under formulated feeding mode was significantly higher than that in traditional feeding mode (P < 0.05). The proportion of particulate organic matter (11.92–17.50%) is similar to Alternanthera philoxeroides (11.24–16.03%) in three feeding modes. There was no significant difference in feeding habits between male and female crabs under the same and different feeding modes. Juvenile crabs feed on both plant- and animal-based feeds in an aquaculture pond, but they are not complete predators and selectively feed on animal or plant feeds as supplements of that which is deficient, in addition to their main feed.

Abstract Aims Invasive plants are a major threat to biodiversity and may adversely affect food security. Clonal integration enables the sharing of resources between connected ramets and can enhance plant performance in many invasive species. However, few studies have examined the role of clonal integration when weeds are exposed to plant growth regulators (PGRs). PGRs are used extensively in agriculture and may affect nearby weeds through soil leaching, erosion, and runoff. Our aim was to investigate the effects of clonal integration on growth in a noxious weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed), in response to two PGRs frequently used in agriculture, gibberellins (GA) and paclobutrazol (PAC). Methods Ramets of A. philoxeroides were propagated in the greenhouse, and treated with PGRs. PGRs were applied to the older ramets (i.e., ‘basal’ part), with half of the plants having the stems between the apical (younger) and basal parts left connected, while the remaining plants had the stems between the two parts severed. Following the growing period, plants were measured for growth traits. Important Findings We found that GA and PAC had contrasting effects on plant growth. GA significantly promoted above-ground growth of the apical ramets via clonal integration. Alternatively, PAC inhibited above-ground growth in the basal and apical parts, and enhanced below-ground growth of the basal and apical ramets through clonal integration. Our results highlight how clonal integration can promote growth in A. philoxeroides following the application of PGRs, which is likely an important mechanism for this species to invade new environments.

Leafy vegetables are important for their nutritive and medicinal values. However, many of them are less explored and underutilized. The present study evaluates the antioxidant and antibacterial activities present in five underutilized leafy vegetables such as Alternanthera philoxeroides, Boerhavia diffusa, Enydra(=Enhydra) fluctuans, Glinus oppositifolius and Suaeda maritima. Methanolic extracts from leafy edible parts of these plants possessed diverse phytochemicals. Of these plants, the polyphenol contents like total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC) and total tannin (TTC) were the highest in E. fluctuans with significant variations concerning other plants. Also, the antioxidant activities of E. fluctuans were greater comparing other plants; the parameters were the total antioxidant activity (TAA), ferric reducing power assay and ability to scavenge DPPH, ABTS and superoxide radicals. The effect of varying extract-quantities revealed the highest antibacterial activity of the E. fluctuans extracts with substantial inhibition zones against six bacterial strains. Accordingly, the E. fluctuans extracts showed the lowest MIC (2.75±0.35 mg ml-1) and MBC (3.50±0.71 mg ml-1), albeit with significant variations with ampicillin. The study highlights that these plants are the untapped repertoires of natural antioxidants and antimicrobials for dietary and therapeutic uses.
