Abstract In the current work, the chemical reactivity of some trivalent phosphorus derivatives R2PR' towards polyhaloalkanes CCI3POR''2 was studied by the quantum method DFT/B3LYP/6-311G (d,p). The introduction of substituents for the trivalent phosphorus derivative and polyhaloalkane allowed us to have more information on these reactions. On the one hand, the calculation of reactivity indices derived from the DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) method and the gapLUMO-HOMO show that trivalent organophosphorus derivatives behave as nucleophiles, while polyhaloalkanes act as electrophiles. On the other hand, the calculation of the activation barrier and the determination of the free enthalpy variation prove that the kinetic and thermodynamic products of these reactions result from the nucleophilic attack of the phosphorus atom on the chlorine halogen. All these theoretical predictions are in very good agreement with the experimental results.

The homolytic cleavage of the PV(O)–PIII bond in tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide simultaneously provides both pentavalent and trivalent phosphorus-centered radicals with different reactivities. The method using V-40 as an initiator is successfully investigated for the regio- and stereoselective phosphinylphosphination of terminal alkynes giving the corresponding trans-isomers of 1-diphenylphosphinyl-2-diphenylthiophosphinyl-1-alkenes in good yields. The protocol can be applied to a wide variety of terminal alkynes including both alkyl- and arylalkynes.

Dendrimers are hyperbranched macromolecules, which are synthesized step-by-step by the repetition of a series of reactions. While many different types of dendrimers are known, this review focusses on the use of trivalent phosphorus derivatives (essentially phosphines and phosphoramidites) for the synthesis of dendrimers. The first part presents dendrimers constituted of phosphines at each branching point. The other parts display the use of trivalent phosphorus derivatives during the synthesis of dendrimers. Different types of reactions have been applied to phosphines. The very first examples of phosphorus-containing dendrimers were obtained by the alkylation of phosphines. Then, several families of dendrimers were elaborated by reaction of phosphoramidites. Such a type of reaction is the base of the solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides; it has been applied in particular for the synthesis of dendrimers constituted of oligonucleotides. Finally, the Staudinger reaction between phosphines and azides afforded different families of dendrimers, and was at the origin of accelerated methods of synthesis of dendrimers. Besides, the reactivity of the P=N-P=S linkages created by this reaction led to very original dendritic structures.

The transition-metal complexes of phosphine and secondary phosphine oxide compounds can be used in various catalytic reactions. In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of eight new crown ethers containing trivalent phosphorus in their macroring are reported. These macrocycles are promising candidates as ligands for catalytic reactions.
