Abstract Introduction Intracranial aneurysm (IA) is a major healthcare concern. The use of statin to reduce serum cholesterol has shown evidence to reduce cardiovascular risk in various diseases, but the impact on IA has not been described. This study aims to determine whether statin use, and serum cholesterol levels interfere with outcomes after IA event. Methods A cohort of patients with IA was analyzed. Patients social and demographics data were collected. Modified Rankin scale (mRS) score after 6 months of follow-up was the endpoint. The data regarding statins use, presence or not of atherosclerotic plaque in radiological images and serum cholesterol of 35 patients were included in our study. Linear regression models were used to determine the influence of those 6 variables in the clinical outcome. Results The prevalence of atherosclerotic plaque, high cholesterol and use of statins was 34.3%, 48.5%, and 14.2%, respectively. Statins and serum cholesterol did not impact the overall outcome, measured by mRS after 6 months (p > 0.05), but did show different tendencies when separated by IA rupture status. Serum cholesterol shows an important association with rupture of aneurysm (p = 0.0382). High cholesterol and use of statins show a tendency for worse outcome with ruptured aneurysm, and the opposite is true for unruptured aneurysm. The presence of atherosclerotic plaques was not related with worse outcomes. Conclusions Multiple and opposite mechanisms might be involved in the pathophysiology of IA. Ruptured aneurysms are associated with higher levels of serum cholesterol. Serum cholesterol and statins use were not correlated with worse outcomes, but further studies are important to clarify these relationships.

Aims: To examine the prevalence of primary epiretinal membranes (ERMs) and associated systemic factors.Methods: The cross-sectional, community-based Tongren Health Care Study enrolled participants who received regular health examinations in the Beijing Tongren Hospital from 2017 to 2019. Using fundus photographs, retinal specialists assessed the presence of ERMs and their systemic associations.Results: Primary ERMs were detected in 841/22820 individuals, with a prevalence of 3.7% [95% confidence intervals (CI): 3.4–3.9%] in the total study population (mean age: 44.5 ± 13.8 years) and 6.5% (95% CI: 6.1–7.0%) in individuals aged 40+ years. In multivariable analysis, a higher ERMs prevalence was associated with older age [odds ratio (OR): 1.10; P < 0.001], higher serum cholesterol concentration (OR: 1.14; P = 0.003) and higher serum sodium concentration (SSC) (OR: 1.12; P < 0.001). In women, a higher SSC, even within the normal range, was associated with an increased risk of ERMs (OR: 1.19; P < 0.001). Female participants with an SSC of 144–145mmol/L as compared with those with an SSC of 135–137 mmol/L had a 5-fold increased odds of having ERMs (All women: OR: 5.33; P < 0.001; Women aged 40+years: OR: 4.63; P < 0.001).Conclusion: Besides older age and higher serum cholesterol concentration, a higher SSC, even if within the normal range, was independently associated with a higher ERM prevalence in women.

We analyzed the relationship between egg consumption, body composition, and serum cholesterol levels. We obtained data on egg consumption by using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) (13,132 adults) and the 24-h dietary recall (24HR) (13,366 adults) from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2008–2011). In men, consuming 2–3 eggs/week was associated with higher fat mass (FM), percentage body fat (PBF), and fat-to-muscle ratio (FtoM), compared to consuming <1 egg/week. In women, consuming 1–6 eggs/week was associated with higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, consuming 2–6 eggs/week was associated with higher total cholesterol, and consuming 4–6 eggs/week was associated with higher FM and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to consuming <1 egg/week. There was no relationship between egg consumption and the prevalence of dyslipidemia, and there was no relationship between egg consumption, body composition, and serum cholesterol levels according to the 24HR. However, there was some association with other cardiovascular diseases and consumption of certain amounts of eggs. Egg consumption investigated by FFQ was associated with body composition and serum cholesterol levels. However, the egg consumption investigated by the 24HR resulted in no health benefit or harm with respect to body composition and cholesterol.

The impacts of dietary levels of oxidized vegetable (sunflower) oil on growth performance, gut morphology, nutrients utilization, serum cholesterol and meat fatty acid profile were evaluated in Ross 308 straight-run (n = 192) day-old broilers. The broilers were arbitrarily distributed among four dietary treatments including; FVO: fresh vegetable oil (1 mEq kg−1), LOO: low oxidized (20 mEq kg−1), MOO: moderately oxidized (40 mEq kg−1), and HOO: highly oxidized vegetable oil (60 mEq kg−1) with 5% inclusion containing six replicates. Results revealed that the broilers consuming MOO and HOO based diets showed reduced (p = 0.05) feed intake, body weight gain and carcass weight accompanied by a poorer feed conversion ratio than those consuming FVO. Villus height, villus height to crypt depth ratio, ileal digestibility of crude protein (p = 0.041), crude fat (p = 0.032) and poly unsaturated fatty acids (p = 0.001) in thigh muscles were decreased, whereas crypt depth (p = 0.001), serum cholesterol levels (p = 0.023) and short chain fatty acids (p = 0.001) were increased (p < 0.001) by increasing dietary oxidation level. In conclusion, MOO and HOO exerted deleterious effects on growth, carcass weight, gut development and nutrients utilization. Low oxidized vegetable oil (20 mEq kg−1), however, with minimum negative effects can be used as a cost effective energy source in poultry diets.

Aim: To determine the correlation of HBA1c and serum cholesterol in diabetic patients. Methodology: This case control study was completed at the Biochemistry and Medicine Departments of Liaquat University Hospital Jamshoro from October 2015 to March 2016.Total number of study subject was 100 and they were divided into two groups. Group A (case group, n=50) comprises diagnosed T2DM subjects while group B (control group, n=50) consists of healthy normal subjects (HNS), healthy normal subjects with mean age 50±6.34 years. These subjects were assessed to find association of glycosylated hemoglobin with serum Cholesterol levels in Type-2 Diabetes mellitus patients. Those patients diagnosed asT2DM with age 30- 60years were included while those patients diagnosed as diabetic erectile dysfunction, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic renal failure, familial dyslipidemia, and hypercholesterolemia was excluded in this study. Blood specimens were collected from both groups aseptically then blood glucose, HbA1c, Blood cholesterol, were estimated. Written consent was taken by all subjects including in this study. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 21.0. P value ≤ 0.05 were considered significant. Results: The mean fasting blood sugar (FBS) of study participants of both groups was 162.74±25.42 mg/dL and 82.60±10.03 mg/dL respectively. The mean random blood sugar of both groups was 299.72±57.88 mg/dL and142.72±31.63 mg/dL respectively and mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) of both groups was 8.40±1.27 and 5.75±0.24mg/dL respectively. The mean serum cholesterol values of DP and HNS were 7.05±1.02 and 5.74±1.45 mg/dl respectively. Conclusion: It was observed a positive correlation between HBA1c and serum cholesterol in type2 DM patients.

Background: To find a correlation between serum cholesterol and Bone mineral density in post menopausal women Methods: The study was carried on matched cases and controls. The experimental group consisted of 100 females at postmenopausal age, in which by the DEXA method was diagnosed osteoporosis while the control group consisted of 50 females in a postmenopausal age but without diagnosed osteoporosis who served as controls. Results: Postmenopausal women in the BMI range 18.5 to 25 (normal)were only included in the study. Others were excluded from the study to avoid confounding factors. The mean BMI in women with osteoporosis was 22.13±1.76 and in Group-II was 21.26±2.06. The results were statistically insignificant. Analyzing the average values of serum cholesterol in our study,we found that the mean cholesterol level in group-I was 210.32 ±34.21 mg/dl and 183.21 ±56.32 mg/dl in group-II. The mean cholesterol level was significantly higher in women with osteoporosis. Conclusion: On the decrease in bone mineral density and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women influence many risk factors. Preventive strategies for development of osteoporosis should be initiated in women with elevated serum cholesterol levels. Keywords: Osteoporosis, Menopause, Lipid Profile, BMI.

The present research was carried out to determine the effects of the addition of cardamom powder at different levels (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 g/kg) to diet on performance, egg quality, and serum parameters in laying quails. In the experiment, a total of 120 laying quails at the age of 20 weeks were randomly distributed to 5 treatment groups with 6 subgroups (4 quails each). Quails were fed with experimental diets for 10 weeks. In the experiment, the feed intake of quails significantly increased with the supplementation of cardamom powder at the level of 3 g/kg to the diet, while other performance parameters were not affected. Eggshell thickness advanced with the addition of 1 g/kg cardamom powder to diet. Egg yolk L* value increased at the level of 4 g/kg, but a* value decreased with the addition of cardamom powder. Other egg quality parameters were not affected by the addition of cardamom powder to the diet. In addition, the supplementation of cardamom powder to the diet significantly reduced serum cholesterol levels of quails. According to the results obtained from the experiment, the addition of cardamom powder at the level of 3 g/kg to the diet increased the feed intake of quails, while the supplementation of 1 g/kg was effective in improving the eggshell quality and serum cholesterol level.

Background: Stroke is the second cause of death and third cause of disability in worldwide so control of risk factor is the best option for prevention of stroke and stroke related disability. Objectives: The study is to know the relation of low serum cholesterol with hemorrhagic stroke. Materials and Methods: This Study is a case control study carried out at Neurology and Medicine ward Mymensingh Medical college hospital (MMCH) from july2017 to December 2018 to see the association of low serum cholesterol with hemorrhagic stroke. A total number of 120 subjects more than 18 years were considered for the study. Among them 60 were study group and 60 were control group. The study population has been selected following some exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results: Result showed that hemorrhagic stroke was more in male than female, common after the age of 60 years. Lower middle classes are more sufferers. Hypertension was 76.7% of study group and serum cholesterol was significantly lower in study group than the control group. Conclusion: This study found that the serum total cholesterol level of study group is less than that of the healthy control group and the difference is statistically highly significant (p< 0.001). So it can be concluded that low serum cholesterol is associated with hemorrhagic stroke. KYAMC Journal. 2021;12(3): 147-152

Background: Studies of the gut microbiota have revealed a great link to obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). The aim of this study was to review the dysbiosis of gut microbiota in terms of the components of MetS among a sample of obese Egyptian female patients and to assess current potential gut microbiota targeted therapies for the treatment of MetS. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study included 82 obese Egyptian women.  All participants were subjected to anthropometric assessment; and  laboratory evaluation of fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), lipid profile and insulin resistance (HOMA), in addition to fecal microbiota analysis for Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroid. Results: Among obese group with MetS, Firmicutes / Bacteroidetes Ratio was negatively associated with HOMA and positively associated with serum cholesterol and LDL, while lactobacillus was negatively associated with serum cholesterol. Among obese group without MetS, Firmicutes/ Bacteroidetes ratio is negatively associated with WC (central obesity marker) and positively associated with CRP (inflammatory marker), while lactobacillus was positively correlated with FBS and HOMA, and Bifidobacteria was negatively associated with serum cholesterol and LDL.Conclusion: The two beneficial types the Lactobacillus and bifidobacteria supplementation in form of probiotic with therapeutic treatment and decreasing of WChave their important role in controlling and treating hypertension, serum cholesterol and LDL levels, among obese females even with MetS.
