[Formula: see text]-algebras are based on an equation which is fundamental in the construction of various torsion-free groups, including spherical Artin groups, Riesz groups, certain mapping class groups, para-unitary groups, and structure groups of set-theoretic solutions to the Yang–Baxter equation. A topological study of [Formula: see text]-algebras is initiated. A prime spectrum is associated to certain (possibly all) [Formula: see text]-algebras, including three classes of [Formula: see text]-algebras where the ideals are determined in a more explicite fashion. Known results on orthomodular lattices, Heyting algebras, or quantales are extended and revisited from an [Formula: see text]-algebraic perspective.

AbstractThe concept of a Sheffer operation known for Boolean algebras and orthomodular lattices is extended to arbitrary directed relational systems with involution. It is proved that to every such relational system, there can be assigned a Sheffer groupoid and also, conversely, every Sheffer groupoid induces a directed relational system with involution. Hence, investigations of these relational systems can be transformed to the treatment of special groupoids which form a variety of algebras. If the Sheffer operation is also commutative, then the induced binary relation is antisymmetric. Moreover, commutative Sheffer groupoids form a congruence distributive variety. We characterize symmetry, antisymmetry and transitivity of binary relations by identities and quasi-identities satisfied by an assigned Sheffer operation. The concepts of twist products of relational systems and of Kleene relational systems are introduced. We prove that every directed relational system can be embedded into a directed relational system with involution via the twist product construction. If the relation in question is even transitive, then the directed relational system can be embedded into a Kleene relational system. Any Sheffer operation assigned to a directed relational system $${\mathbf {A}}$$ A with involution induces a Sheffer operation assigned to the twist product of $${\mathbf {A}}$$ A .

This paper studies rough approximation via join and meet on a complete orthomodular lattice. Different from Boolean algebra, the distributive law of join over meet does not hold in orthomodular lattices. Some properties of rough approximation rely on the distributive law. Furthermore, we study the relationship among the distributive law, rough approximation and orthomodular lattice-valued relation.

AbstractThe variety of (pointed) residuated lattices includes a vast proportion of the classes of algebras that are relevant for algebraic logic, e.g., $$\ell $$ ℓ -groups, Heyting algebras, MV-algebras, or De Morgan monoids. Among the outliers, one counts orthomodular lattices and other varieties of quantum algebras. We suggest a common framework—pointed left-residuated $$\ell $$ ℓ -groupoids—where residuated structures and quantum structures can all be accommodated. We investigate the lattice of subvarieties of pointed left-residuated $$\ell $$ ℓ -groupoids, their ideals, and develop a theory of left nuclei. Finally, we extend some parts of the theory of join-completions of residuated $$\ell $$ ℓ -groupoids to the left-residuated case, giving a new proof of MacLaren’s theorem for orthomodular lattices.

We introduce rough approximations into basic algebras. After investigating elementary properties of the upper (lower) approximations in basic algebras and discussing the convexity of these two approximations in linearly ordered basic algebras, we generalize related results for MV-algebras, lattice ordered effect algebras, and orthomodular lattices to basic algebras. We also study the relationship between upper (lower) rough ideals of basic algebras and upper (lower) approximations of their homomorphic images.

AbstractWe introduce and investigate central lifting property (CLP) for orthomodular lattices as a property whereby all central elements can be lifted modulo every p-ideal. It is shown that prime ideals, maximal ideals and finite p-ideals have CLP. Also Boolean algebras, simple chain finite orthomodular lattices, subalgebras of an orthomodular lattices generated by two elements and finite orthomodular lattices have CLP. The main results of the present paper include the investigation of CLP for principal p-ideals and finite direct products of orthomodular lattices.

Abstract States of quantum systems correspond to vectors in a Hilbert space and observations to closed subspaces. Hence, this logic corresponds to the algebra of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space. This can be considered as a complete lattice with orthocomplementation, but it is not distributive. It satisfies a weaker condition, the so-called orthomodularity. Later on, it was recognized that joins in this structure need not exist provided the subspaces are not orthogonal. Hence, the resulting structure need not be a lattice but a so-called orthomodular poset, more generally an orthoposet only. For orthoposets, we introduce a binary relation $\mathrel \Delta$ and a binary operator $d(x,y)$ that are generalizations of the binary relation $\textrm{C}$ and the commutator $c(x,y)$, respectively, known for orthomodular lattices. We characterize orthomodular posets among orthogonal posets. Moreover, we describe connections between the relations $\mathrel \Delta$ and $\leftrightarrow$ (the latter was introduced by P. Pták and S. Pulmannová) and the operator $d(x,y)$. In addition, we investigate certain orthomodular posets of subsets of a finite set. In particular, we describe maximal orthomodular sublattices and Boolean subalgebras of such orthomodular posets. Finally, we study properties of $\Delta$-blocks with respect to Boolean subalgebras and distributive subposets they include.
