Three new Lower Devonian dalmanitid trilobite taxa are recognized from the Talacasto Formation in the Precordillera Basin, Argentina, which includes two monospecific genera (Ivanites leonorae n. gen., n. sp. and Aguaditaspis mediaspina n. gen., n. sp.), and one additional new genus and species left in open nomenclature. These taxa combine characters of the subfamilies Dalmanitinae Vogdes, 1890 and Synphoriinae Delo, 1935, challenging their taxonomic distinction. Forty percent of the dalmanitids from high paleolatitudinal basins from southwestern Gondwana (Malvinokaffric) exhibit non-homologous dorsal spinosity. Aguaditaspis mediaspina n. gen., n. sp. shares similar spines with Trypaulites calypso (Hall, 1861). The unnamed new genus resembles the spinosity of endemic Malvinokaffric dalmanitids, like Dalmanitoides Delo, 1935 and Fenestraspis Braniša & Vaněk, 1973. Considered defensive, the recorded spinosity along with putative sublethal-attack marks, suggest higher predation pressure than previously thought at high paleolatitudes. This evidence is in accordance with some hypothesis on rising predation pressure in the mid-Paleozoic marine ecosystems.

This paper records a new genus Taungurungia, which is the first new taxon with emergences to be described from the Lower Devonian of Victoria. The fossil is preserved primarily as a compression and impression, and lacks internal anatomy. The fossil extends our knowledge of known variations within early land plants, with most characteristics, such as emergences and H- or K-branching, redolent of affinities with the zosterophylls. However, having a large ovate terminal sporangium, the fossil adds to taxa that in some cases have been provisonally allied to the zosterophylls with elongate sporangia; this further demonstrates the need for reassessment of the Zosterophyllopsida.

Three specimens belonging to Zosterophyllaceae are described. Two of these possess bilateral symmetry and are the first to be described with this arrangement from the Lower Devonian of Victoria. One of these specimens is similar to Zosterophyllum fertile, and the other cf. Zosterophyllum sp. A. is unusual in possessing vascularised long stalks. The third specimen described cf. Zosterophyllum sp. B. from Ghin Ghin Road, near Yea possesses a small spike and has sporangia that appear vertically elliptical and similar to some South China taxa. All the specimens are significantly different to previous zosterophyll taxa described from Victoria.

The research is based on the three-layer natural hydrocarbon reservoirs theory, which allocates 3 layers in a natural reservoir – the genuine seal, the productive part and the intermediate layer situated between them - the false seal. The Middle Ordovician-Lower Frasnian terrigenous complex variable in thickness, composition and stratigraphic completeness sub-regional natural reservoir was identified in the northern part of the Timan-Pechora oil and gas province adjacent to the Pechora Sea. It includes several zonal and local natural reservoirs (Middle Ordovician-Lower Devonian, Middle Ordovician-Eiffelian, Zhivetian-Lower Frasnian and others). The distribution areas of these natural reservoirs were extrapolated to the Pechora Sea offshore. The areas with the highest prospects of oil and gas potential of the Pechora Sea offshore were delineated, basing on the Timan-Pechora oil and gas potential analysis. These are the northwest extensions into the Pechora Sea of the Denisov trough, the Kolva megaswell, as well as the Varandei-Adzva structural zone and the Karotaiha depression. The Lorette Cave contains a wide variety of deposits within various stratigraphical contexts. This cave is a part of the complex underground meander cut-off of the Wamme and Lomme rivers, between some swallow-holes along their two talwegs near On, Jemelle and Rochefort, and the general resurgence at Eprave. The Lorette Cave is embedded within the Givetian limestone formations of the Calestienne. This cave displays the first part with a labyrinthic structure. Some parts of the cave galleries are affected by recent tectonic activity, which dislocates some galleries and provokes collapses. The second part of the cave comprises the West Gallery, which contains the most complete sedimentary series. The “gours suspendus” (hanging gours) section is located at the western end of the gallery. The cave contains numerous and rich detrital deposits. The oldest sedimentary unit is a diamictite found in several galleries (e.g. Galerie Fontaine-Bagdad, Salle du Cataclysme). It is composed of large decametric-sized quartz and sandstone pebbles coming from the erosion of the Lower Devonian formations of the Ardenne. This deposit is older than the U/Th dating limit, i.e. 350 ka. The West Gallery exposes an area of collapsed blocks and ends in a vast room. This gallery is filled with a thick fluvial series of upper Pleistocene age and capped by speleothems of Tardiglacial to Holocene age. The large terminal chamber is clogged by flooded pits. A tributary gallery shows a sedimentary series in a subsiding pit, the “Fosse aux Lions” (Lions’ Pit). These deposits are interstratified diamictite interbedded between two fluvial units, the upper part of which displays oblique stratifications. The dating of a summit stalagmite places this set at 120 ka. The present paper analyses a section made in the southern flank of the terminal room, close to the junction with the West Gallery: the “gours suspendus” section. A large part of this section consists of a complex fluvial deposit disconformably resting on top of a compact lower clay formation. This fluvial deposit is stratified, comprising mostly diamictites interstratified with thin levels of gravel and clay. It is capped by an upper clay unit and sealed by a flowstone. Thin strata of finer-grained size sediments (coarse sand), as well as clay lenses, occur within the lower clay. The diamictites indicate a torrential origin of the sediment. At the base, just above the lower clay, some sandy channelling strata testify that one or several fluvial deposition episodes occurred. Then, torrential and probably very short-living events are separated by decantation phases. The pebbles and smaller particles are made of quartz, sandstone and muscovite that most probably originated in the Lower Devonian formations. The “gours suspendus” section provides a new illustration of the succession of sedimentation and erosion phases in Belgian caves. It is now well demonstrated that speleothems grow mainly during temperate to hot and humid climatic phases and detrital infills are deposited in caves during cold/glacial phases. The physical erosion of sediments with ravine formations should be placed in the climatic history of the region. A gullying by a coarse detrital formation like that of the new section is due to a powerful heavy loaded current. The deposits within caves were therefore available, which can only occur during a cold phase due to the absence of continuous vegetation cover. The sand and clay levels interstratified between levels of pebbles indicate nevertheless distinguished flow regimes. However, this torrential lava in the new section seems different from the old diamictite. The deposition of the sedimentary units in the West Gallery seemingly happened during a glacial–interglacial transition. This sedimentological study sets a future perspective for dating flowstones and stalagmites at the top of or embedded within the deposit levels in order to propose a more robust chronological frame for the evolution dynamics of the cave infilling of the Lorette Cave in relation to the climatic history of the region.

Abstract The Lochkovian (Lower Devonian) conodont biostratigraphy in China is poorly known, and conodont-based subdivision schemes for the Lochkovian in peri-Gondwana (the Spanish Central Pyrenees, the Prague Synform, Sardinia, and the Carnic Alps) have not been tested in China. Therefore, we studied conodonts from the lower part (Bed 9 to Bed 13) of the Shanjiang Formation at the Alengchu section of Lijiang, western Yunnan to test the application of established subdivision schemes. The conodont fauna is assignable to 12 taxa belonging to eight genera (Ancyrodelloides, Flajsella, Lanea, Wurmiella, Zieglerodina, Caudicriodus, Pelekysgnathus, and Pseudooneotodus), and enables recognition of two chronostratigraphical intervals from the lower part of the Shanjiang Formation. The interval ranging from the uppermost part of Bed 9 to the upper part of Bed 10 belongs to the lower Lochkovian; whereas an interval covering the uppermost part of Bed 11 to the upper part of Bed 13 is correlated with the upper half of the middle Lochkovian. The Silurian-Devonian boundary is probably located within Bed 9, in the basal part of the Shanjiang Formation. However, the scarcity of specimens precludes definitive identification of bases of the lower, middle, and upper Lochkovian as well as other conodont zones recognized in peri-Gondwana.
