In this paper, a numerical study is presented to investigate wave force on the connections of main parts of a side-anchored straight floating bridge concept for the Bjørnafjorden fjord crossing. The floating bridge is supported by 18 pontoons, and three groups of mooring lines are employed to restrain the bridge against horizontal loads and increase its transverse stiffness. The created wave forces at the connections of pontoon-column and column-girder of the floating bridge considering the effects of short-crested and long-crested waves, varying wave direction, hydrodynamic interaction between pontoons, and mooring system are analyzed. It is found that short-crested and long-crested waves depending on their direction decrease or increase the wave forces on the joints. Considering that the effect of hydrodynamic interaction between pontoons can increase or reduce the wave forces and moments created in the joints, which means the neglect of the hydrodynamic interaction effects between the pontoons to simplify the modeling of this type of floating bridge, may be unacceptable. Moreover, the results showed that the bridge mooring system does not merely reduce the wave forces and moments at joints along the bridge.

Floating bridge is a set of specialized shallow draft boats or floats hyperlink collectively to cross the river or canal or lake. With a track or deck most early floating bridge had been built for the features of the battle. There are numerous kinds of floating bridges relying on the conditions of the land and the type of barriers to cross. The principle behind floating bridge concept is the Archimedes’ principle of buoyancy. This study was made to review previous studies concerned about the floating bridges. Almost all the study concerned with floating bridge components and their suitability with the given condition. only limited information is available for floating bridges in many aspects. In this study we have covered the different types of pontoons, access to bridge, navigational openings, mooring systems, etc. are the most important parts of floating bridge.

Abstract Considering the upper structure restraint effect of the floating bridge, the diffraction effect and radiation effect of linear monochromatic waves, the dynamic response equation of floating pier is derived and the factors affecting the dynamic stability of the floating pier are analyzed in this paper. Based on the theory of potential flow, the calculation domain is divided into the interior region and the exterior region. The wave diffraction and radiation problems are solved by the matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM). After obtaining the wave excitation force, additional mass and radiation damping coefficient, considering the restraint effect of the upper structure of the floating bridge, the motion differential equation of the floating pier is established, and the response amplitude operator (RAOs) of the floating pier is obtained. The effects of span, mass and stiffness of upper structure, as well as the draft depth, size and net height of floating pier on dynamic stability of floating pier under wave are analyzed. The results show that the increase in the span of upper structure will significantly increase the peak RAOs of sway and heave, and the increase in stiffness is helpful to reduce the peak RAOs of sway and heave. The increase of the floating pier radius can reduce the heave RAO, and the net height on the water surface of the floating pier increases the heave and roll.

Abstract Floating bridges are a promising solution for replacing ferries in the crossing of Norwegian fjords. Their design involves the adoption of accurate, but at the same time efficient models for the loads the structure is subjected to. Wave drift forces at the bridge’s pontoon may excite the bridge’s lower horizontal modes, with consequences to the loads on the bridge and mooring lines. Newman’s approximation is normally adopted to calculate the wave drift forces in such applications. A common simplification is to assume that the pontoons are fixed in the calculation of wave drift coefficients, while it is known that wave frequency motions may significantly influence drift loads. This paper evaluates the consequences of this simplification, in comparison to coefficients obtained considering the pontoons’ motions. First, the effect of the bridge deflection, due to mean drift, on the pontoon’s motions, is evaluated. It is found that this effect is negligible. Then, the RAOs are used in the calculation of wave drift coefficients, showing very different results than those obtained with fixed pontoons. Time-domain simulations are then performed with wave drift coefficients calculated with both approaches, with focus on the bridge girder moments and mooring line tensions. It is shown that using wave drift coefficients obtained with fixed pontoon is a non-conservative simplification, depending on sea state and wave incidence direction.

Floating bridges are suitable for connecting land parcels separated by wide and deep waterbodies. However, when the span of the crossing becomes very long, the water environment exhibits inhomogeneities which introduce difficulties to the modelling, analysis and design of the bridge structure. The wave inhomogeneity may be described by means of field measurement and/or numerical simulations. Both approaches face complications when the resolution is much refined. It is thus important to examine the effect of the resolution related to the modelling of inhomogeneous waves on the global structural responses. In this study, a hypothetical crossing at the Sulafjord is chosen, and the wave environment in the year 2015 at 10 positions along the crossing is numerically computed. Next, different inhomogeneous wave conditions are established based on the wave data at 3, 5, and 10 positions, respectively. Time-domain simulations are conducted to examine the effect of different modelling approaches of the inhomogeneous wave condition on the global responses of a long, straight and side-anchored floating bridge.
