Contaminant levels and trends have been monitored in eggs of seabirds from the Canadian Arctic since 1975. Nearly 50 years of monitoring have provided key information regarding the temporal and spatial variation of various contaminant classes in different seabird species. However, previous work has primarily assessed individual or related contaminant classes in isolation. There is therefore a need to collectively consider all of the contaminants monitored in seabird eggs to determine where monitoring has been successful, to find areas for improvement, and to identify opportunities for future research. In this review, we evaluated monitoring data for the major legacy and emerging contaminants of concern in five seabird species from three High Arctic and three Low Arctic colonies in Canada. We review the history of Canada’s Arctic seabird egg monitoring program and discuss how monitoring efforts have changed over time; we summarize temporal, spatial, and interspecies variations in Arctic seabird egg contamination and identify important knowledge gaps; and we discuss future directions for ecotoxicology research using seabird eggs in Arctic Canada. Ultimately, this paper provides a high-level overview of the egg contaminant monitoring program and underscores the importance of long-term and continued seabird contaminant monitoring in Arctic Canada.

The stylonurid eurypterid Leiopterella tetliei Lamsdell, Braddy, Loeffler, and Dineley, 2010 (Chelicerata: Eurypterida: Rhenopteridae) from the Early Devonian (Lochkovian) of Nunavut in Arctic Canada is redescribed. Restudy of the holotype under polarized light revealed a labrum, epistomal sutures, prosomal appendage III, and deltoid plates anterior to the genital appendage. An additional new specimen preserves the distal podomeres of appendage VI and gradually tapering opisthosomal tergites. The characters resolved here support the hypothesis that L. tetliei was relatively basal within the wider Stylonurina clade, with its tapering postabdomen supporting a more basal position within Rhenopteridae than previously suggested.

Seasonal and historical transformations of ice and permafrost suggest that the Mackenzie Delta in Arctic Canada can be understood as a solid fluid. The concerns and practices of delta inhabitants show that fluidity and solidity remain important attributes in a solid fluid delta. They are significant not as exclusive properties, but as relational qualities, in the context of particular human projects and activities. Indigenous philosophies of ‘the land’ and Henri Lefebvre’s notion of ‘tempo’ in Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life (2004) may help to illustrate the predicament of living in a world that is solid and fluid rhythmically, and in relation to particular practices. Economic, political, sociocultural and physical transformations can all be experienced as both solid and fluid, depending on the degree to which they resonate with people’s purposes. In a world where everything seems to be changed and changing, solidity and fluidity may best be seen as indications of relative differences in tempo.

Abstract Background Our community-driven projects address concerns of Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities about Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, responsible for elevated gastric cancer mortality in the region. Community research partners wished to learn whether bacterial characteristics determine severity of Hp-related disease in their communities. We aimed to describe gastric histopathology by cagA genotype of Hp isolated from residents of 7 Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories and Yukon. Methods Participants underwent gastroscopy with 5-6 biopsies taken for histopathological assessment and 2 biopsies taken for tissue culture during 2008-2017. We used multiple PCR reactions and DNA sequence analysis to classify Hp genotypes as cagA+ or cagA-. A single pathologist used the updated Sydney classification system to grade severity of 5 gastric pathology outcomes: Hp density; chronic gastritis; active gastritis; atrophy; and intestinal metaplasia. We estimated prevalence of each outcome with 95% confidence intervals (CI) by gastric subsite and cagA status. Results Of 262 Hp isolates assessed, 142 (54%) were cagA+. Prevalence of moderate-high Hp density, severe chronic gastritis, moderate-severe active gastritis, atrophy, and metaplasia were (%[CI]): respectively, 78[70-85], 44[36-53], 65[56-72], 55[46-63], 25[18-33] in cagA+ participants and 61[52-70], 35[27-44], 31[23-40], 32[23-41], 8[4-15] in cagA- participants. cagA+ participants had higher prevalence of all outcomes in antrum and corpus. Conclusion Hp-infected Indigenous residents of Arctic Canada who harbored cagA-positive strains had higher prevalence of more severe gastric pathology than those with cagA-negative strains. Key messages Community-driven research answers questions posed by those who bear the disease burden.
