This study was to explore the efficacy of low-frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) combined with preventative pelvic floor muscle exercises (PPFME) and knowledge-attitude-practice model (KAP model) in women with urinary retention (UR) after a pelvic surgery and the effect on quality of life (QOL). The clinical data of 153 women hospitalized with UR after a pelvic surgery from January 2015 to June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into the Control Group (CG, n=45, LFES+PPFME) and the Study Group (SG, n=108, LFES+PPFME+KAP model) according to the different treatment methods. Following indicators were compared between the two groups: clinical efficacy, time to first urination, urine output, rate of extubation in 3D, rate of repeated intubation, urodynamic indicators before and after treatment, postvoid residual (PVR), bladder compliance (BC), maximal flow rate (Q-max), pressure of detrusor at Pdet-Q-max (Pdet-Q-max), changes in QOL, incidence of urinary tract infection, and length of stay (LOS). Compared to CG, SG showed higher overall response rate (ORR) and rate of extubation in 3D, shorter time to first urination, higher urine output, lower rate of repeated intubation and incidence of urinary tract infection, and shorter LOS (P<0.05); both groups achieved improvements in urodynamic indicators and QOL score after treatment (P<0.05); the urodynamic indicators and QOL score in SG were better than the CG’s (P<0.05). LFES combined with PPFME and KAP model is effective in treating women with UR after a pelvic surgery by efficaciously improving patients’ urination and QOL.

To compare the effects of pelvic floor muscle exercise and abdominal muscle training, breathing exercises and abdominal massage in children with functional constipation. Functional constipation is one the most common gastrointestinal condition in pediatrics practice with an estimation prevalence ranging from 0.7% to 29.6%. It has a multifactorial pathophysiology mainly consisting of stool with holding and delayed colonic transit.30 subjects who met theRome-III criteriafor pediatric functional constipationwere randomly divided into 2 groups. Group-A was trained with pelvic floor muscle exercise along with squat walking for 5 min under supervision of parents. Exercise duration was increased 5 min per week, for two consecutive weeks and remained the same for the next six weeks and Kegels was performed for 10 seconds. Group-B was given isometric training of the abdominal muscle which was carried out in two ways. The patient was either lying down in a left lateral decubitus position with the hip and knee flexed at 90° with two series of eight contractions and relaxations until the third week and was then increased to two series of 12 contractions and relaxations for 6 weeks. In the sitting or lying down method, training began with one series of three contractions and relaxations lasting 10 s which was increased to five repetitions in the third week until the sixth week along with abdomen tuck-in exercise. Diaphragmatic breathing and abdominal massage was given to both groups in common. The intervention of the study was about 8 weeks.Results of statistical analysis showed that both Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises and Abdominal Muscle Training are effective in treating functional constipation among children. However pelvic floor muscle exercise was better than abdominal muscle training on the basis of Wexner Construction Scoring System

Background: Urinary incontinence is defined as the complaint of involuntary loss of urine. It is a common and embarrassing problem. Pelvic floor muscle training has been effective for the prevention and treatment of urinary incontinence during pregnancy and after childbirth. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness & outcome of physiotherapy in pelvic floor muscle training during pregnancy & childbirth in urinary incontinence. Methodology: In this scoping review articles are searched from the search engines like PUBMED, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, etc. These articles are reviewed according to the inclusion criteria which include articles from last 10 years, randomized control trials, systematic review, experimental study, etc. 7 articles were selected according to it. Later the qualities of these articles were analyzed using PEDRO Scale. Conclusion: In conclusion our study demonstrates that the pelvic floor muscle training might be effective in solving the problems of urinary incontinence during pregnancy and after childbirth. Pelvic floor muscle training can be advised by the physiotherapist or the pregnant women can be trained on how to perform the pelvic floor muscle exercises. Thus, pregnant women can take care of themselves and independently perform pelvic floor muscle exercises, thereby eliminating the problems of urinary incontinence. Introduction: Urinary incontinence, loss of bladder control, is a common and often embarrassing problem which may have a profound impact on quality of life. Women in their premenopausal period may find pelvic muscles are simply weaker than they were before. These muscles may not have enough strength to hold the sphincters close and may cause unwanted leakage of urine. Pelvic floor exercises often also called kegel exercises after their originator, Dr. Arnold Kegel are widely promoted as the starting point for building pelvic floor strength. As urinary incontinence is not a life threating condition, quality of life takes precedence over other issues when deciding the therapy. Pelvic floor muscle education is a well acceptable therapy for urinary incontinence. Assessing patient’s knowledge regarding pelvic floor muscle exercises in an effort to improve their quality of life may be a reasonable starting point. Materials and Methods: It is quantitative quasi experimental research conducted among 40 premenopausal women who were admitted in St. Martha’s Hospital Bangalore. Self-structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge on pelvic floor muscle exercises. The pretest was administered to control and experiment groups, followed by which post-test was done for the control group. Whereas the experiment group were given a Video Assisted Teaching Programme on Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises and then administered a post-test. Result and Conclusion: The mean of pretest was 13.02 with standard deviation of 4.02 whereas the post-test mean score was 19.22 with the standard deviation of 3.62. The present study concluded there is an improvement in the knowledge level after the administration of Video Assisted teaching programme on pelvic floor muscle exercises and the study also revealed there is no association between the knowledge scores and the selected demographic variables (age, educational status and place of residence) and clinical variables (parity, type of delivery and urinary incontinence).

Purpose of the study: Pelvic floor muscles dysfunction is one of the most important etiologies of coccydynia, therefore, manual therapies have been proposed as the first line of treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of biofeedback as a new approach in the treatment of coccydynia. Methods: Thirty women were randomized into two groups. Both groups were injected with corticosteroid. One group received pelvic floor muscle exercises plus biofeedback while the other only performed exercises. Patient’s pain was measured using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in the first visit and after 1, 2 and 6 months of follow-up as well as Dallas pain and SF-36 quality of life questionnaires before and 2 months after the treatment. Results: Pain had improved significantly after 1, 2 and 6 months in both groups compared to the baseline. However, the amount of change was not different between the groups at any time interval. The results were the same for Dallas pain scale and SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. Conclusion: Adding biofeedback to pelvic floor muscle exercises did not lead to any further improvement in management of chronic coccydynia. Further studies with larger sample sizes may show the effect of biofeedback more clearly.

Purpose Urinary incontinence is one of the most important health problems for people over 65 years of age. It is defined as involuntary and uncontrolled loss of urine. This paper aims to present a contemporary view on the effects of physiotherapeutic procedures in combating urinary incontinence. Physiotherapeutic procedures were compared: pelvic floor muscle exercises, physical therapy and biofeedback (BF) to demonstrate their effectiveness in managing urinary incontinence in the elderly. Design/methodology/approach The databases Pubmed and GoogleScholar have been searched for articles on the impact of interventions – physiotherapeutic procedures on the effectiveness of the treatment of urinary incontinence in the elderly. Findings Pelvic floor muscle exercises are effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence, strengthen muscle strength and improve patients' quality of life. A long-lasting, systematic and individual training program with a physiotherapist is the most effective. BF helps to intensify the therapeutic effect of exercise but also allows you to achieve good results as an independent treatment method. Positive effects are also noticeable in physical therapy, electrostimulation and magnetotherapy are very effective. Physiotherapeutic procedures have a positive effect in the treatment of urinary incontinence in the elderly. However, further research is needed to clarify the most effective methods. Originality/value This paper offers many ways to deal with urinary incontinence in the elderly using physiotherapeutic procedures, thus helping to improve the quality of life of those affected by urinary incontinence.
