This study was created to uncover the social determinants of Black American women’s success in health promotion programs. We used the Superwoman Schema to understand the complexities of Black womanhood and uncover best practices in the promotion of their health. The sample consisted of women ages 18–25 who attend a large southern HBCU. We collected data using qualitative focus groups. Participants reported the greatest health-related concerns Black American women facing are mental health, obesity, and relationships with Black men. When it comes to health promotion programs, respondents reported a desire for classes that are fun, interactive, informative, educational, and include group interaction, accessible, and incentivize participation. Uncovering the social determinants of Black American women’s health and program success is central in decreasing extant health disparities. Future health scholars are urged to incorporate Black feminist theory and methods into their work to create health promotion interventions tailored for Black women.

Health promotion programs designed specifically to support men to improve their lifestyle behaviours are required to improve men’s health. This study explored factors that influenced men’s experiences of, and engagement with, the Rugby Fans in Training—New Zealand pilot trial, a professional sport-based healthy lifestyle intervention for overweight men. Thirty-five men (mean age = 45, SD = 10 years) who completed the 12-week intervention participated in one of eight semi-structured focus groups. Using inductive thematic analysis, five themes represented the meanings in the data. First, a group of like-minded men all in the same boat recognised the importance of being in similar life situations and having similar reasons for joining the programme. Second, the men described the importance of the support and motivation provided by the team atmosphere created through the programme. Third, the motivational coach recognised the characteristics, skills and knowledge of the coach delivering the programme which created engagement with it. Fourth, the education sessions were valued for the knowledge gained and underpinning philosophies that guided them. Finally, the involvement of the rugby franchise influenced commitment to the programme and created initial interest. These results provide evidence for the key components that should be incorporated into the future development of and improvement to healthy lifestyle interventions for men.

Abstract The accessibility and suitability of housing to improve health and well-being for the growing share of older adults in the population has important policy implications. Yet, current housing policies tend to neglect the heterogeneity of older adults housing needs which vary across age, health, and personal preferences. Little is known about how life transitions in combination with perceived housing relates to good aging. This qualitative study aims to explore the relationship between perceived housing, life transitions, well-being, health, and participation in older age. Participants were community-dwelling and aged 65-75 years. All participants reported multiple transitions considered as important for the way they viewed their housing situation and social relationships as well as for the choices they made around their housing. The findings from this project may be used to develop health promotion programs that proactively support housing decisions along the process of ageing and enable full participation in society.

Abstract Research shows that men in the U.S. experience significant morbidity and earlier mortality than women and are less likely to access, interpret, and apply health information to improve their outcomes. Although evidence-based health promotion programs have proven successful at increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors and reducing morbidity among older adults, older males are still significantly less likely to enroll and sustain participation in such health interventions. While studies have shown the barriers and facilitators to older adult participation in health programs in general, it is largely unknown why older male recruitment and participation in health promotion interventions remains so low. In this poster presentation, we conducted a thorough review of the last 20 years of existing research across a variety of academic search databases to outline the barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for increasing older male participation in health promotion programs. Of 1,194 initial search results, 383 article abstracts were thoroughly screened for inclusion, and 26 articles met all inclusion criteria. Included studies were coded and analyzed using Grounded Theory and reveal that masculine gender roles, as well as program scope, environment, and gender of the instructors and other participants, were important factors for male participation. Interventions should include men in all aspects of program planning and implementation, take into account men’s existing relationships and interests to create gender-sensitive programming, and clearly delineate the benefits to participation. Lastly, the field of public health would benefit by helping to normalize men’s participation in health promotion interventions.

Abstract Translation of effective evidence-based programs into practice is critical to promoting and preserving older adults’ function and independence. This presentation will provide an introduction to implementation strategies, defined as the “methods or techniques used to enhance the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of a clinical program or practice.” Some examples of implementation strategies include education and training, stakeholder engagement, patient and/or consumer involvement, adaptation, and technical assistance. Application of these implementation strategies will be illustrated using examples from local and national scale out of evidence-based health promotion programs for older adults within the VA Healthcare System. This presentation will close with guidance on how to select, track, and evaluate implementation strategies.

Objectives: The Purpose of this study is to find out the relationship among depression, self-efficacy, and health promotion behaviors of health college students and to develop programs and mediate strategies to improve desirable health promotion behaviors.Methods: This descriptive study examined the correlation between the depression, self-efficacy, and health promotion behaviors of health college students located in Daegu Metropolitan City participated in the study from October to December. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0. The general characteristics of the subjects were presented in frequency and percentage, and depression, self-efficacy and health promotion behaviors were presented in average and standard deviation. The results of this study were as follows: First, the correlation between depression, self-efficacy and health promotion behavior was analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the effects of general characteristics, depression, and self-efficacy on health promotion behaviors.Results: The depression of health college students was 14.94 ± 11.51, the total score of self-efficacy was 74.60 ± 12.92, and the health promotion behavior was 74.85 ± 18.62. As a result of analyzing the correlation between depression, self-efficacy and health promotion behavior, depression had a statistically significant negative correlation with health promotion behavior, and self-efficacy and health promotion behavior had a statistically significant positive correlation. The factors that depression and self-efficacy have influence on health promotion behavior were gender, depression (-0.15, p= 0.048), and self-efficacy (0.59, p< 0.001).Conclusions: The depression, self-efficacy, and health promotion behaviors of health college students were found to be correlated; development of health promotion programs to improve desirable health promotion behaviors is required.

Purpose: This longitudinal study aimed to investigate which types of perceived social support are associated with changes in subjective health over time among Korean older adults. We further explored whether these associations vary by older adults' gender.Methods: The current study examined 3,650 older adults drawn from additional survey data of the 6th and 7th waves of the Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS). Data were analyzed using hierarchical linear regression analyses.Results: Higher perceived instrumental and emotional supports significantly associated with less decline in subjective health over 2 years. Gender only moderated the association between emotional support and changes in subjective health. That is, higher emotional support associated with less decline in subjective health among older women, but not among older men.Conclusion: These findings suggest that instrumental support is the strongest predictor of older adults' changes in health over time, indicating the need for public supports for those who lack instrumental support from their social ties. Health promotion programs for older women should aim to enhance their perceived emotional support to protect them from faster declines in subjective health over time.
