DE MAGISTRO (OU CONTRA WITTGENSTEIN?): SOBRE A POSSIBILIDADE DE UMA FILOSOFIA DA LINGUAGEM EM AGOSTINHO

Nas Investigações Filosóficas, Wittgenstein conjectura de início sobre um modelo pré-teórico, de inspiração agostiniana, acerca dos modos de compreensão da linguagem; isto é, ele se questiona a respeito de uma noção de compreensão linguística com base em um paradigma cujo grande recurso seria a “ostensividade”. Todavia, essa percepção não parece corroborar com exatidão àquilo que de fato o filósofo de Hipona advoga em sua teoria. Portanto, o objetivo do artigo é o de compreender o que Agostinho entendia como linguagem, incluindo aí o aprendizado linguístico (a assimilação das palavras), e se de fato podemos considerar que ele estabeleceu uma tentativa genuína no sentido de conceber alguma sorte de filosofia nessa seara linguística, portanto, uma filosofia da linguagem.

Le De quantitate animae d’Augustin, un dialogue philosophique ?

Saint Augustine’s De quantitate animae is a dialogue often neglected by scholars who have studied the question of Augustinian dialogue. This study aims to remedy this lack of interest and to show the strategic place of this dialogue in the Augustinian production of the years 386–390. Firstly, after stating the question, the article questions the genre of dialogue and shows that the De quantitate animae of Augustine perfectly meets the criteria defining the genre of the philosophical dialogue. Secondly, this study examines the stakes and the place of the dialectic in this work. In fact, our paper emphasizes, following the analyzes proposed by Giovanni Catapano, the importance of considering the kind of dialogue in Augustine by the yardstick of his epistemological presuppositions. In this perspective, the De quantitate animae appears as a work of transition, which is based on the epistemology of Contra Academicos and the notions of doubt and inconcussum, while announcing the epistemology of the inner Master developed in the De magistro.

Agostinho e Wittgenstein:

Wittgenstein inicia as Investigações filosóficas com uma citação das Confissões (I, 8) de Agostinho, intencionando usar tal passagem para se contrapor a um modo de refletir sobre a linguagem pautado na sua referencialidade, concepção que chamaremos de “linguagem referencial”. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de apresentar a mudança de abordagem que Wittgenstein apresenta com relação à linguagem a partir do conceito de uso (Gebrauch) linguístico mobilizado em suas reflexões pós-Tractatus. Além disso, também discutiremos alguns pontos de comentários realizados por Agostinho em De magistro, com o intuito de mostrar que, à sua maneira, ele também problematizara a concepção de linguagem referencial.

Care and Critique

This paper explores the moments of overlap between Augustine’s pedagogical approach in De magistro and feminist theories of care. I argue that Augustine not only offers a useful model for those who wish to reclaim the centrality of students within education. He also encourages us to critique the narrative that women are more ‘naturally’ suited for caring relationships. I conclude by outlining the benefits of such critique. What do we gain when we allow a diversity of gendered experiences to inform the practice of care in the classroom?

Learning to Pray

This chapter opens by reflecting on the prayer with which Augustine opens his incomplete Soliloquia. In this work, Augustine introduces the reflexivity of prayer: prayer is a desire to know God and himself, to know God through himself and to know himself through God. In De magistro this reflexivity is expanded to account for a spoken yet essentially silent form of prayer. In these two works that bookend his experiment with the genre of philosophical dialogue, prayer emerges as an activity that is bound up with Augustine’s lifelong pursuit of wisdom, which, in turn, is closely related to the practice of prayer in non-Christian schools of philosophy of this period (388–91 CE).

Palabras que liberan. El enseñar como admonitio en De magistro de Agustín de Hipona

El artículo propone relacionar la acción de docere como admonitio en el diálogo De magistro de san Agustín, con la idea de libre albedrío, libertad y el proceso de liberación que tiene lugar en el transcurso histórico-biográfico. Las palabras del maestro señalan hacia algo, situando al discípulo ante diversas acciones libres: la atención, la experiencia, el juicio y el asentimiento. Como sujeto activo, el discípulo se dispone a actuar en la línea de la admonitio originaria por la que el ser humano anhela la verdad, in via hacia la plena libertad.

El De Magistro de San Agustín: una posible lectura desde la relación filosofía y educación

En el presente texto se aborda la interpretación del De Magistro en la que el papel iluminador y de guíadel par maestro –interior/maestro– exterior puede entenderse como reflejo de la relación entre filósofo y educador.En la conclusión se presentan tanto la función última del educador como el camino que éste ha de seguir parallevarla a cabo.
