Coals from the south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin have a strong outburst susceptibility. The objective of this study was to identify the influence of coalification degree on methane sorption and micro scale strength properties of 24 coals from Jastrzębie Zdrój. Coal samples showed a reflectance Ro between 0.98 and 1.25%. Sorption measurements were carried out by gravimetric method. Sorption capacities were determined at mean deposit temperature of 35 °C. Using the unipore model and solution of Fick’s second law, the effective diffusion coefficients of methane in the studied coals were obtained. The Vickers method was used to study the microhardness and the modulus of elasticity. It has been shown that the increase in the coalification degree reduces the sorption capacity of coal and also reduces the rate of methane emission. Coals the most susceptible to outbursts, were the most brittle. With the increase in Ro, the methane seam pressure p increased as well as desorbable methane content DMC, both due to the reduction in the sorption capacity of coal. The increased dp index is a warning sign indicating an increased total methane content of coal seam, an increased seam pressure or an alternation of coal structure.

Complex study of glycerol effects on the skin tissue was performed. The change in optical, weight and geometrical parameters of the rat skin under the action of the glycerol solutions was studied ex vivo. Possible mechanisms of the skin optical clearing under the action of glycerol solutions of different concentrations were discussed. The results can be helpful for refinement of models developed to evaluate the effective diffusion coefficients of glycerol in tissues.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine drying curves of land saffron (Curcuma longa L.) rhizomes at different temperatures and ventilation conditions to adjust non-linear regression models, and to calculate effective diffusion coefficients and activation energies. Saffron rhizomes were randomly collected in natura with a hoe from the soil in Rio Verde, Goiás, Brazil. They were subsequently sized, sanitized, and sliced into 2.63 ± 0.1 mm thick sections. Rhizomes were dried in an oven with forced air ventilation at 45, 55, 65 and 75 °C for 18, 14, 10 and 9 hours, respectively. As the temperature increased, drying time was reduced. Consequently, moisture content also decreased, facilitating the drying process by decreasing the energy required to remove water molecules. Among the analyzed models, the Midilli model was best adjusted to the data under different drying air conditions. Effective diffusion coefficients (D) were 9.17 × 10-11, 13.33 × 10-11, 20.09 × 10-11, and 35.89 × 10-11 m2 s-1 at 45, 55, 65 and 75 °C, respectively, increasing with higher temperatures. Activation energy for liquid diffusion during drying was 21.186 kJ mol-1.

In this paper, the reactive diffusion in Ni80C20r?Ti ternary system is discussed at 1173K. The diffusion couple was prepared and annealed for 100 h. The two intermetallic phases and two two-phase zones occurred, namely: Ti2Ni, TiNi, TiNi+Cr, and TiNi3+Cr. Based on the experimental results (molar fractions, thicknesses of the intermetallic phases), the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of all components in each phase were numerically approximated. The Wagner method was used in the pure intermetallic phases. In the two phase zones the approximation was based on the generalized Darken and Wagner methods. The presented methods allowed for determination of the effective diffusion coefficients in each presented phase.

ABSTRACT: This research evaluated the influence of blanching on osmotic dehydration in sucrose solutions of papaya of Formosa cultivar. The characterization of invertase present in the fruits was also done. Blanching possibly caused damages to the cellular structure resulting in higher water loss, sugar gain and, thus, effective diffusion coefficients than fresh papayas during osmotic dehydration. The invertase extracted from papaya pulp presented optimum temperature of 45 °C and optimum pH of 4.8. Considering the low production cost of papaya and the invertase characteristics, the fruit shows to be a potential source for the referred enzyme extraction.
