The modification of the mesoporous carbon sorbent with 3-phenylpropanoic acid was carried out in order to create preparations of complex, prolonged action, exhibiting detoxifying, antibacterial, and antifungal properties due to the applied modifier, which is capable of migrating into the solution and exhibiting its own biospecific properties. A technique was developed for fixing 3-phenylpropionic acid (PhPA) on a carbon support by its adsorption from solution. Three types of sorbents with various content of the modifier (PhPA) and the sorbent without modifier were studied. The sorption activity of new sorbents was studied using liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry methods on model experiments with plasma and aqueous additives of hydroxylated phenyl-containing acids (PhCAs) in various concentrations. The specific surface area was significantly changed for sorbent, modified with 1 × 10−3 mol/L of PhPA solution, and was 25% less than the area of unmodified sorbent. Potentially toxic biologically active hydroxylated PhCAs were used to create model solutions. The degrees of sorption of these compounds were close to 100%, except phenyllactic acid (over 80%). The sorbent without modifier and two sorbents with the lowest content of the modifier are considered to be more effective for the purification of the plasma from the hydroxylated PhCAs than the sorbent with the highest concentration of the modifier. Simultaneous adsorption of toxic metabolites from the bloodstream and desorption of beneficial ones can be used for a more subtle correction of the patient’s condition.

Piroxicam (PRX) is a commonly prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Its efficacy, however, is partially limited by its low water solubility. In recent years, different studies have tackled this problem and have suggested delivering PRX through solid dispersions. All these strategies, however, involve the use of potentially harmful solvents for the loading procedure. Since piroxicam is soluble in supercritical CO2 (scCO2), the present study aims, for the first time, to adsorb PRX onto mesoporous silica using scCO2, which is known to be a safer and greener technique compared to the organic solvent-based ones. For comparison, PRX is also loaded by adsorption from solution and incipient wetness impregnation using ethanol as solvent. Two different commercial mesoporous silicas are used (SBA-15 and Grace Syloid® XDP), which differ in porosity order and surface silanol population. Physico-chemical analyses show that the most promising results are obtained through scCO2, which yields the amorphization of PRX, whereas some crystallization occurs in the case of adsorption from solution and IWI. The highest loading of PRX by scCO2 is obtained in SBA-15 (15 wt.%), where molecule distribution appears homogeneous, with very limited pore blocking.

HMIM NTf2 adsorbs on gold from ethanol to form a patchy bilayer. ‘Bound’ anion (filled anion) and ‘bound’ cation (filled blue) sit underneath a layer of cation (empty blue) and anion (empty orange). The IL regions are separated by oxidised gold (darker colour).

The effect of contact time and the determination of the kinetic parameters of adsorption of methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solution onto Iron-Oxide-Coated-Zeolite (IOCZ) powder are important in understanding the adsorption mechanism. The effect of contact time on adsorption quantity was studied at different initial concentration and temperature, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model was adopted to fit the experimental data using non-linear regressive analysis and it was used to predict the adsorption behavior. The results showed that the process of adsorption MO was endothermic and chemisorption. The pore diffusion was not significant.
