In this paper, the interface between yttria stabilized zirconia (Y0.08Zr0.92O2, YSZ) electrolyte and Sr-doped lanthanum manganite (La0.80Sr0.20MnO3, LSM) cathode for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is studied. For such a purpose, the combination of a suitable synthesis route for obtaining fine powders and simple aqueous colloidal shaping routes is proposed. The synthesis of nanosized particles of La0.80Sr0.20MnO3 by a citrate route and their full characterization, including the colloidal stability and the densification and phase development determined by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy at different temperatures, is reported. In a second step, YSZ tapes were obtained by aqueous tape casting and used as substrates for the preparation of LSM coatings by dip-coating using aqueous slurries. YSZ tapes were used either in the green state or after a pre-sintering treatment. Co-sintering at 1350 °C led to a sharp interface with excellent adhesion, also achieved when coating pre-sintered tapes. In both cases, the substrates are dense and the coatings are porous, with thicknesses of 85 and 60 μm for green and pre-sintered tapes, respectively. No diffusion of Zr and Y occurs at the LSM layer, but some diffusion of La and Mn towards the YSZ layer takes place.

While an anodizing process is essential for magnesium alloys to be used under corrosive environments, it sometimes stimulates a fatigue fracture that initiates at the interface between the coating layer and the substrate. In this study, a plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) technique was employed to provide excellent adhesion between the anodizing layer and the AM50 die-cast by applying an extremely high dielectric discharge in an alkaline phosphate electrolyte, and its effect on corrosion and fatigue behaviors was investigated. The stress intensity factor at the fatigue limit was estimated to be 0.28 MPam0.5. The specimen anodized using the PEO technique exhibits enhanced strength and corrosion resistance compared to the unanodized counterpart. Furthermore, it shows a relative fatigue life in spite of the thick anodizing layer because the crack initiates from the interface, not from the pore near the interface.

The manufacture and properties of waterborne UV-cured coatings (WUV coatings) by acetone process based on urushiol for wood finishing were investigated. Firstly, epoxide urushiol (EU) was prepared by reacting urushiol with epichlorohydrin. Secondly, the EU was reacted with acrylic acid to obtain acrylic epoxide urushiol (AEU). Next, the prepolymers were synthesized by the reaction of AEU, 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (DMPA), and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), respectively, using acetone as a solvent. The prepolymers were further neutralized by triethylamine (TEA) to obtain ionomers and dispersed in the water. After removing the acetone by vacuum distillation, the polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) were obtained. Finally, the WUV coatings were performed by adding a photoinitiator (Irgacure 2959). The products in the synthesized processes and the properties of the WUV coatings were examined. The results showed that the EU, AEU, prepolymers, and ionomers could be synthesized stably. The PUDs synthesized by the IPDI and HDI had a similar solid content of 25.2% and 26.2%, and similar pH values of 7.8 and 7.6. However, the IPDI-containing PUD displayed lower viscosity, smaller particle size, and a more even polydispersity index. The IPDI-containing WUV film displayed a higher hardness, gloss, and lightfastness. The HDI-containing WUV film possessed superior impact resistance. Both IPDI-containing and HDI-containing WUV films showed excellent adhesion, bending resistance, and mass retention, and demonstrated a potential for wood finishing.

Abstract Selective metallization of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) was conducted by laser ablation with 1064 nm laser radiation and electroless plating in nickel solution. A rough caterpillar-like structure and polar surface with high property of absorption and anchoring for active seeds were produced by laser ablation. The laser treatment produce had a pronounced influence on nickel deposition. After immersed in nickel solution for 150s, a homogeneous and dense nickel film was selectively deposited on the laser treatment area of CFRP by electroless plating successfully. The Ni plating exhibited excellent adhesion on the CFRP. The technique in this study would widespread the application of CFRP in the area of spacecraft microwave components and waveguide antenna.

To assist or replace the traditional suture techniques for wound closure, soft-tissue adhesives with excellent adhesion strength and favorable biocompatibility are of great significance in biomedical applications. In this study, an injectable hydrogel tissue adhesive containing adipic acid dihydrazide–modified gelatin (Gel-ADH) and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) was developed. It was found that this tissue adhesive possessed a uniform structure, appropriate swelling ratio, good injectability, and excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. The adhesion capacity of the developed adhesive with optimized component and concentration was stronger than that of the commercial adhesive Porcine Fibrin Sealant Kit. All these results suggested that the developed hydrogel was a promising candidate for a soft-tissue adhesive.

Purpose This study aims to the service life of TA15 alloy by solving the problem of the binding force between the matrix and AlTiSiN coating. The effect of a plasma nitriding (PN) interlayer on the magnetron-sputtered AlTiSiN coating was also investigated in detail. Design/methodology/approach The double-glow plasma alloying (DGPA) and magnetron sputtering (MS) techniques were combined as a new approach to realize a bilayer on TA15 consisting of an AlTiSiN layer with a PN interlayer. A TiN interlayer was formed via co-diffusion during the PN conducted at 1050°C for 3 h. Findings The PN interlayer can effectively improve the adhesion between coating and matrix; the PN/AlTiSiN coating presented excellent adhesion (80.1 N) and anti-wear property with a nano-hardness of 18.62 GPa. The resulting three-dimensional wear-track morphology exhibited a shallow depth and a narrow width. Originality/value The novel combination of the DGPA and MS technologies, using an infiltration layer rather than a coating one as the intermediate layer, can effectively enhance the adhesion between AlTiSiN coating and TA15 matrix. Meanwhile, the gradient layer can effectively improve both surface bearing and wear resistance.

Improved OLED systems have great potential for next-generation display applications. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the conductive polymers poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) have attracted great interest for advanced applications, such as optoelectronic products. In this paper, the simultaneous enhancement of the conductivity, roughness, and adhesion properties of transparent conductive films with PEDOT: PSS/CNTs is reported. These films prepared by a simple spin-coating process were successfully used to produce high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with an improved lifetime. Addition of PEDOT: PSS lowered the film sheet resistance and CNTs helped to enhance the stability and maintain the lifetime of the OLEDs. In addition, treatment with methanol and nitric acid changed the morphology of the polymer film, which led to greatly reduced sheet resistance, enhanced substrate adhesion, and reduced film roughness. The best performance of the film (PEDOT: PSS: CNT = 110: 1, W/W) was 100.34 Ω/sq.@ 90.1 T%. High transmittance, low sheet resistance, excellent adhesion, and low roughness (3.11 nm) were achieved synchronously. The fabricated OLED demonstrated a low minimum operating voltage (3 V) and could endure high voltage (20 V), at which its luminance reached 2973 cd/m2. Thus, the incorporation of CNTs within PEDOT: PSS electrodes has great potential for the improvement of the performance of OLED devices.
