Optimal oxygen supply is vitally important for the cultivation of aerobically growing cells, as it has a direct influence on cell growth and product formation. A process engineering parameter directly related to oxygen supply is the volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient kLa. It is the influences on kLa and computing time of different interfacial force and population balance models in stirred bioreactors that have been evaluated in this study. For this investigation, the OpenFOAM 7 open-source toolbox was utilized. Firstly, the Euler–Euler model with a constant bubble diameter was applied to a 2L scale bioreactor to statistically examine the influence of different interfacial models on the kLa value. It was shown that the kL model and the constant bubble diameter have the greatest influence on the calculated kLa value. To eliminate the problem of a constant bubble diameter and to take effects such as bubble breakup and coalescence into account, the Euler–Euler model was coupled with population balance models (PBM). For this purpose, four coalescence and five bubble breakup models were examined. Ultimately, it was established that, for all of the models tested, coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with PBM resulted in better agreement with the experimental data than using the Euler–Euler model. However, it should be noted that the higher accuracy of the PBM coupled models requires twice the computation time.

Migration of an encapsulated leukemia HL60 cell through sudden contractions in a capillary tube is investigated. An HL60 cell is initially encapsulated in a viscoelastic shell fluid. As the cell-laden droplet moves through the sudden contraction, shear stresses are experienced around the cell. These stresses along with the interfacial force and geometrical effects cause mechanical deformation which may result in cell death. A parametric study is done to investigate the effects of shell fluid relaxation time, encapsulating droplet size and contraction geometries on cell mechanical deformation. It is found that a large encapsulating droplet with a high relaxation time will undergo low cell mechanical deformation. In addition, the deformation is enhanced for capillary tubes with narrow and long contraction. This study can be useful to characterize cell deformation in constricted microcapillaries and to improve cell viability in bio-microfluidics.

We present an experimental method for evaluating interfacial force per width and predicting internal stress in mid-infrared band-pass filters (MIR-BPF). The interfacial force per width between the two kinds of thin-film materials was obtained by experimental measurement values, and the residual stress of the multilayer thin films was predicted by the modified Ennos formula. A dual electron beam evaporation system combined with ion-assisted deposition was used to fabricate mid-infrared band-pass filters. The interfacial forces per width for Ge/SiO2 and SiO2/Ge were 124.9 N/m and 127.6 N/m, respectively. The difference between the measured stress and predicted stress in the 23-layer MIR-BPF was below 0.059 GPa. The residual stresses of the four-layer film, as well as the 20-layer and 23-layer mid-infrared band-pass filter, were predicted by adding the interface stress to the modified Ennos formula. In the four-layer film, the difference between the predicted value and the measured stress of the HL (high–low refractive index) and LH (low–high refractive index) stacks were −0.384 GPa for (HL)2 and −0.436 GPa for (LH)2, respectively. The predicted stress and the measured stress of the 20-layer mid-infrared filter were −0.316 GPa and −0.250 GPa. The predicted stress and the measured stress of the 23-layer mid-infrared filter were −0.257 GPa and −0.198 GPa, respectively.
