Background: In experiments with homeopathic medicines is important to test the inert vehicle from succussed preparations for the treatment control. Aim: To evaluate the effect of hydro-alcoholic solutions 1cH, 6cH and 30cH in mice’s experimental infection with Trypanosoma cruzi. Methodology: In a blind, randomized, controlled test, two independent experiments with 34 and 51 swiss male mice, 8 weeks old, kept in cages micro acclimated, infected with 1400 blood trypomastigotes of the Y strain of T. cruzi (via IP), were divided: IC-untreated control; G1cH-received hydro-alcoholic solution dynamized 1cH; G6cH-received hydro-alcoholic solution dynamized 6cH and G30cH-received hydro-alcoholic solution dynamized 30cH. The solutions were prepared according to Brazilian Homeophatic Pharmacopoeia1 with alcohol 70 ° GL. Final preparations (1cH, 6cH and 30cH) were manipulated with water (Sigma-SP-Brazil). The treatment was offered diluted with water (1/100mL) ad libitum 48 hours before infection, available for 16h. After infection, the animals were treated 56h/56h for 16h until the 9th day of infection. The parasitological parameters were analyzed: Curve of Parasitemia, Total Parasitemia (TP), Peak Maximum of Parasites (PMP), Pre-Patent Period (PPP), Patent Period (PP) and Survival. The experiment was approved by the UEM’s Ethical Committee. Results: G1cH showed a higher survival (p=0.044) with a life expectancy of 2.58 times larger than the control group (Figure 1.A), as well as lower TP (p=0.002) and PMP (p = 0.018). PPP and PP showed no statistical difference, although in G1cH1 it was observed an increasing trend of PPP (p=0.065). These results are related to host’s benefit. The G6cH group presented a longer survival (p=0,045), with a life expectancy 1.94 times larger than the control group (Figure 1.B). Although no difference to TP, PMP, PP and PPP has been observed, the alcohol 6cH performed protecting animals against infection. The G30cH displayed an increasing trend of PMP (p=0.066) compared to the control group. Effects of inert vehicle succussed have been reported in studies in vitro2. However, no effects had been reported in vivo studies yet2,3. The hydro-alcoholic solution 7% 13CH, tested under the same conditions and animal model, did not change the natural evolution of the infection2. Conclusion: The hydro-alcoholic solutions 1cH and 6cH altered the course of experimental infection by T. cruzi, reducing the parasitemia and/or increasing the survival time, and can not be considered as inert vehicle in the high diluted compounds preparation.

For over two centuries homeopathy has demonstrated its therapeutic properties, thus gaining more and more supporters worldwide. Many researchers opine that due to absence of a medicinal substance in a homeopathic preparation it is not necessary to study its healing effect. However, for the last few years our research was focused not only on understanding the mechanism(s) of homeopathic action in medical and veterinary practices but also on the effect of different homeopathic preparations on plants. The studies aimed to rule out the placebo effect from the homeopathic phenomenon, but also at identification of therapeutic effect on different plants. These studies allowed to extend the boundaries of practical use of homeopathy including its common use in the farming industry. The efficacy of various homeopathic preparations was assessed for their use in plant growth through application techniques such as watering, spraying, soaking and sprinkling etc. Growth dynamics, duration of fruit ripening, crop yield were monitored and compared to reference plants. Homeopathic preparations for agricultural plants were carefully selected on the basis of their effect on the crop yield – the principal criterion for the selection. Based on these criteria it was observed that the homeopathic picture of tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes is almost same within one variety, in all tested sorts, although, in case of fruit trees such as apple, pear the homeopathic similimum varied depending of the selection method. Our results showed that, in case of trees, one-time application of homeopathic preparation during a season is preferable and sufficient. In case of vegetable cultures, application may not be more frequent than once a month as more frequent application results in diminishing of yield. For root plants single treatment at the time of planting was sufficient. The performed studies showed that the growth and ripening indicators significantly prevailed in the vegetables, which had been treated with homeopathic preparations, as compared to common traditional way of plant handling (controls). Thus the performed studies suggest the following: a) Homeopathic effect on biological structures is not a placebo effect. b) Obtained data are a categorical proof of the homeopathic preparation effect on plants causing higher yield in agricultural crops and therefore, have good potential for their use on the industrial scale in agriculture. c) The potential of the homeopathic phenomenon practical use has not been fully explored yet and needs a follow-up study.

The use of less impacting techniques in agricultural systems is the global trend, so the use of High dilutions on these systems has been studied as ecologically sound technology. This study had the object to study the interaction between the High dilutions and the development of Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake seedlings. Was conducted from May 2007 to July 2007, in the greenhouse of the Department of Plant Science at the Federal University of Viçosa. Applications were made in one day intervals and preparations utilized were: Phosphorus, Calcarea carbonica, Kali muriaticum, Magnesia carbonica, in dynamizations 3CH and 12CH and water and alcohol dynamised CH3. Morphological parameters of quality seedlings were analyzed over time and the end of the experiment. The prepared Kali muriaticum 12CH promoted increased root length of approximately 55% compared to control water . The prepared Phosphorus 3CH differed from other treatments in the green total mass variable. The High dilutions Phosphorus 3CH and Kali muriaticum 12CH promoted increase in root growth. The responses obtained with the application of Phosphorus 3CH indicate the viability of agronomic use to the increase of the root exploration and absorbing elements necessary for plant growth.

The development and yield of plants is directly related to the effects of salinity. There are several reports in scientific studies of significant reduction in the growth and production of tomato in soils with high electrical conductivity. The correction or recovery of salinized soils, although technically possible, is a slow and very expensive process, making it necessary to develop new technologies. The objective of this study is to evaluate the production of tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) seedlings using seeds pelleted with a homeopathic preparation of Natrum muriaticum (Nat-m) submitted to saline stress. The treatments consisted of the pelletization of tomato seeds with six dynamizations of Nat-m (3cH, 5cH, 7cH, 9cH, 11cH and 13cH). Coated or uncoated seeds (controls) were placed in phenolic foam blocks, kept in plastic trays previously moistened with 50 mM NaCl saline solution (2.922 g.L-1 of NaCl, electrical conductivity = 4.5 dSm-1) and nutrient solution (0.15 dS.m-1) at half the ionic strength, containing 4, 1, 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.5 mmol.L-1 of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S, and 17.5, 9.5, 10.5, 2, 0.45 and 0.35 mmol.L-1 of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and Mo, respectively. The variables evaluated were germination percentage, germination speed index, shoot length, leaf area, number of leaves, root volume, root dry matter, and shoot dry matter. The treatments pelleted seeds/talc Nat-m 5cH and pelleted seeds/talc Nat-m 7cH increased all variables evaluated. They differed statistically from the controls, with a positive response for the development of tomato seedlings under disequilibrium conditions.

The treatment of mastitis is based mainly on the use of antibiotics. However, in recent times, an increase in resistance phenomena and the presence of residues in milk and their derivatives has been reported. Few studies have focused on the treatment of mastitis by homeopathy elsewhere or in Algeria. The objective of this current study aimed to clarify in particular the interest of homeopathy in the treatment of mastitis. The study was carried out on two dairy farms on a total of 14 cows located in Laghouat region (southern Algeria). Before the start of the experiment, a tolerance test was performed on two cull cows free from any apparent infection (except mastitis). Local and general reactions were noted at specific times. A total of 31 mammary quarters received 4 intramammary injections of a homeopathic preparation containing several natural products every 12h over 48h. A clinical examination and an analysis of the milk samples on D0, D7 and D14 were performed on all cows and the conclusion was made on the day 14. Data showed a very good tolerance to the homeopathic preparation and a 75% cure rate of the clinical mastitis. An improvement with a decrease in CMT score was also noted. In addition, healing rates of 51.85% for subclinical mastitis on D7 and 59.29% on D14 were also reported. Ultimately, homeopathy could, in some cases, represent an alternative to antibiotic therapy and bring an advantage to breeders. Further investigations should be performed in the future.

Abstract Background and Aim This preliminary study aimed to evaluate whether a homeopathic preparation (Traumeel S) might be a good option to control post-operative outcomes (pain, edema and trismus) associated with surgical removal of mandibular third molar teeth. The null hypothesis was that Traumeel S is not different from dexamethasone (gold standard) in controlling these post-operative inflammatory complications. Methods A randomized, “split-mouth”, triple-blind clinical trial was conducted. Seventeen healthy patients with a mean age of 20.94 ( ± 5.83) years had their lower asymptomatic bilateral third molars removed. Patients were randomized to receive Traumeel S or dexamethasone pre-operatively by injection into the masseter muscle; each patient acted as his/her own control. At 24, 48, 72 hours and 7 days after the surgery, the pain was evaluated according to a visual analog scale, edema through linear measurements of the face, and trismus through the maximum buccal opening. Wilcoxon statistics or paired t-test were used, and a significance level of 95% was adopted. Results For pain, the results for Traumeel S were not different (p > 0.05) from those of dexamethasone after 24 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days. For edema, the results for Traumeel S were not different (p > 0.05) from those of dexamethasone at all post-operative evaluations. For mouth opening, the results for Traumeel S were not different (p > 0.05) from those of dexamethasone at 72 hours and 7 days after third molar extraction. Conclusion With the exception of some early post-operative findings, the null hypothesis is not rejected. Traumeel S might be a good alternative approach to dexamethasone for controlling pain, edema and trismus after third molar removal.
