At first syncretism existed only in the fields of religion and philosophy, but now it is developing in the educational aspect. This can be seen in educational institutions in Papua, especially the Papuan Islamic Education Foundation. This study uses qualitative analytical research with a historical approach. The results of this study indicate that Yapis Papua was founded on the initiation of community organizations and Islamic leaders who are in the NU and Muhammadiyah community organizations. The two organizations and Islamic leaders together building the Papuan community through education by establishing the Yapis Papua educational institution and now there are 193 schools and 5 universities in Papua. This collaboration occurs because the existing Islamic schools have not been recognized because they are only local and partial so they do not have a parent foundation throughout the land of Papua.

This study aims to explain and identify the methods used in internalizing Islamic characters in boarding-based public schools. Public schools that implement a boarding system have a unique and special character. It is different from Islamic education which has been firmly embedded in schools that have been based on pesantren since the beginning. This research is descriptive qualitative, with data collection methods through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study show that internalization of Islamic characters through subjects in the dormitory, such as the study of classical Islamic books (Fiqhu Sunnah, Aqidatul Awwan, Bidayatul Mujtahid, etc) and self-development activities in the form of extracurricular and organizational activities. The used methods are the wisdom method, exemplary method, habitual method, mauidzah method, and the reward and punishment method. Unlike pesantren culture which is closely tied to the figure of the kyai, the dormitory-based State Islamic schools tend to be weak in terms of the initiative and charisma of the kyai who the leaders are. Individually, kyai figures in boarding-based public boarding schools do not have as strong a role as those in pesantren. However, the ustad and coach figures play a collective and joint role in building students' Islamic character. Keywords: Islamic Character, Madrasah Aliyah, Boarding System, Public Schools

This study uses a literature study of examining the Tarjih Council of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organisation in Indonesia. Criticism is directed towards manhaj’s principle which states that any classical Islamic school of law should not be embraced and, thus, breaks up from the chain of Islamic intellectuality. The critics, however, fail to cover the very idea of Muhammadiyah as an embodiment of the Islamic renewal vision. The article aims to reveal the evolution of the manhaj. The evolution will be elaborated into stages to show the development of concepts and principles in each stage. The article is based on a literature study using constructive conceptual analysis. The analysis is divided into three steps, namely analytical assessment, performative aspects, and conceptual genealogy, stressing the reflective relationship between knowledge and social reality. The study shows that the Tarjih Council’s preference not to embrace any classical Islamic schools of law has developed since the establishment of the Tarjih Council. The developments of manhaj’s formulation occur in three stages from 1924 until 2000. The manhaj comes up with the synthesis of textuality, rationality, and spirituality as the basic vision of Muhammadiyah’s renewal idea which reflects the achievement of a modernist Islamic movement. The study, in comparison to previous research, provides a more comprehensive picture of the manhaj of Muhammadiyah as a representation of the Islamic renewal movement and shows how the manhaj comes to a synthesis that marks Muhammadiyah as a unique modernist-renewal movement.Contribution: The study enriches the perspectives on the manhaj as the backbone of Muhammadiyah ideology and shows that Islamic modernism in Indonesia has stepped further to uncover a synthesis suitable to Indonesian society.
