The purpose of this research is to carry out a systematic review of the existing scientific literature on the prevalence of Burnout in university professors in the time period 2005–2020. For that purpose, an exploratory review through the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus related to this psychosocial syndrome under the PRISMA methodology has been made. After the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a final group of 12 studies were obtained. The results show the presence of high levels of Burnout in a sample of 2,841 university professors in the period studied, which makes it necessary to implement psychosocial intervention programs to prevent this syndrome and promote the personal and professional accomplishment of teachers.

Background: Some endocrinologists were involved in the management of patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic. This study aims to analyze burnout levels among the Association of Medical Endocrinologists (AME) members before and during the pandemic. Methods: We recruited two AME members samples at two different times: before COVID-19 (n = 811) and during the first wave of the ongoing pandemic (n = 579). Both the samples filled the Maslach Burnout Inventory. We performed MANOVAs to evaluate demographic and COVID-19 related differences in burnout levels and Pearson’s Chi-square test to compare burnout severity before and during the pandemic. Results: Women reported higher Emotional Exhaustion and reduced Professional Accomplishment than men. The oldest physicians had lower levels of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization and higher Professional Accomplishment than younger workers. Independent contractors displayed lower levels of burnout compared to established contractors. Finally, the pandemic, per se, did not lead to changes in burnout levels. Discussion: Women and young physicians are at higher risk of burnout. It is also possible that front-line professionals are at higher risk during a health care crisis. Moreover, it is likely that the length of exposure to the pandemic has not been sufficient to impact burnout levels. Conclusions: Short-term exposure to pandemic-related activities seemed to have a low impact on burnout severity, except for physicians directly involved in managing COVID-19 cases. It is strongly recommended the availability of psychological support in public hospitals.

In keeping with the growth in the development of healthy environments in organizational contexts, in recent years, there has also been increasing interest in the identification of personal psychological resources that contribute to improved worker mental health. From this proactive approach, this study examines the mediating role of flourishing in the relationship between psychological capital (PsyCap) and burnout in teachers, a professional group that is particularly prone to suffering from this syndrome. A total of 1379 teachers from pre-school, primary, secondary, and vocational education systems participated in the study. The mediating effect of flourishing was determined via mediation analysis using the PROCESS macro. The results showed that flourishing partially mediates the negative effect of PsyCap on the three symptoms of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of professional accomplishment). These findings indicate that both PsyCap and flourishing may be effective personal resources in reducing teacher burnout. Therefore, in order to prevent burnout, it is advisable to design interventions that combine PsyCap and flourishing.

ABSTRACT Background: Burnout syndrome is a work-related psychological response, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low professional accomplishment. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout syndrome in neurologists in the State of Paraná, Brazil, dividing them into stroke neurologists and non-stroke neurologists. Methods: We performed a crosssectional observational study, with a quantitative approach, based on the online Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey questionnaire. Results: A total of 74 neurologists were evaluated, 44.6% of whom had burnout syndrome, predominantly among females and stroke neurologists. Both the stroke neurologist and non-stroke neurologist groups had medium degrees of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization; however, while stroke neurologists had high professional accomplishment, non-stroke neurologists had mean-to-low scores of professional accomplishment. There was a proportional relationship between age and emotional exhaustion. Female neurologists also reported lower professional accomplishment levels. Conclusion: Burnout is prevalent among the neurologists of Paraná, corroborating the results previously reported in other studies. There seems to be no significant difference between those neurologists who work in the emergency stroke care setting compared with those who don't.

SUMMARYObjective: To determine the risk factorspredisposing to burnout syndrome instudents from Dentistry Program at theUniversity of Valle.Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study were enrolled 90 studentsin the period from February to June 2012in the academic program of Dentistry fromthe Universidad del Valle, who attend third, fourth and fifth year. The test Maslach BurnoutInventory (MBI) was applied whichconsists of 22 items with 7 response optionscorresponding to three basic dimensions ofburnout syndrome, emotional exhaustion(AE), depersonalization (D) and reducedpersonal or professional accomplishment(BR). Chi2 test were run for each of thefactors and Kruscal Wallis and ANOVAwere also applied. Results: The fifth graders scored an averageof 5.60 on a scale of depersonalization(D), which was statistically significant, indicating that there is a risk factor presentin this group of students. In this dimensionof depersonalization, values were lowerfor levels 1, 2, 3 and 6 but there was nostatistically significant differences betweenthem. Given the sub-scale of emotionalexhaustion (AE) the highest values wereassociated with socio-economic levels 3,4 and 5.Conclusions: Our results show that the academicload can be a predisposing factor thatimpacts mainly on the depersonalizationand manifests itself at the end of college.Socioeconomic variables, family environment, age, or spend a certain semesterdo not constitute specific risk factors fordevelopment of the syndrome. Key words: Burnout syndrome, emotionalexhaustion, depersonalization, personalaccomplishment.
