The goal of this research is to know the students' ability in using paired conjunction in a simple sentence. Based on the limitation of the problem, the researchers limit the problem in using paired conjunction just focuses on the use of not only ..... but also, both ..... and, either ..... or, and neither ..... nor. Before doing the research, the researchers observed to know the number of classes in the eighth grade of SMP PGRI Tembilahan. The number of eighth-grade students just consists of one class, namely Class A. The population of this research was all of the eighth-grade students because the sample of population less than 100 the researcher used total sampling technique. The researchers used a quantitative method to get the data needed. The research instrument is tested and collected by students’ test scores where they were asked to identify the paired conjunction in a simple sentence with the total correct paired conjunction (30). So that, each correct paired conjunction was scored by 3.3. Based on the result of the test, the mean score of their ability in using paired conjunction is 70.62. It is categorized good level, which includes in the interval 61-80. Where there are no students who got in a very good score, five students obtained a good score and there is no gained in enough, poor, and very poor score. So, based on that explanation, it can be concluded that their ability in using paired conjunction in the simple sentence at eighth grade of SMP PGRI Tembilahan include in the average was enough and understanding to use paired conjunction.

The research purpose is to know the difficulties faced by the students in learning Present Perfect Tense and the cause of the problems. The design of the research is descriptive research. The number of the population was thirty-six students. The researchers used tests, questionnaires, and interviews to collect the data. After analyzing the data, it found that the average score of test results was 44.67, which was classified as a less classification. Then the ability in using To Be (Has/Have) of present perfect tense was placed in a good rating by the mean score 68.29. Moreover, the students' ability in understanding regular verbs was in a less classification by the mean score 34.03. It also happens for the knowledge in understanding irregular verbs which were classified as less classification by the mean score 39.72. Based on the data obtained from the questionnaires, it shows that most of the students felt that Present Perfect Tense is a problematic material of English. It was proven by seeing that more than 50% of the students said that. It caused by some factors; (1) English materials are less favoured by the students, (2) they are lack of English vocabulary mastery, (3) they have difficulties in recognizing to be of Present Perfect Tense, and (4) they could control the form of verbs changes.

The implementation of the 2013 Curriculum is the continuity of the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum and School-Based Curriculum, which includes integrated competency of attitudes, knowledge, and skills. It is not as easy as imagined since, in reality, it has been found some obstacles in implementing it. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to find out and describe the obstacles faced by teachers in implementing it. Moreover, the researchers used descriptive research design to achieve its goal. The research samples were English teachers who were from several different juniors and senior high schools. Then the researchers used a questionnaire and interview to gather the corpus. After analyzing the data, it found that they do not get significant obstacles in preparing the Lesson Plans. However, some points as evaluation are obstacles in adjusting the character values ​​based on the basic material competencies, and incompatibility between the materials in the syllabus and the 2013 Curriculum textbooks. Also, they find the difficulties in learning implementation such as how to bring applicative skills in the learning process, how to foster the students' creativity with the limited facilities, and how to apply the scientific approach stages especially for "Asking" and "Reasoning." Then they get quite tricky in implementing assessment of the 2013 curriculum, like many assessment instruments must be completed, and some teachers are proficient using the 2013 Curriculum assessment application.

Speaking is a subject matter that must be learned by the students because it is the most important factor in the development of English language skills. However, it is more difficult than another subject because there are some difficulties experienced by students in speaking, such as low vocabulary mastery, the difficulties in pronouncing, confused in arranging words, afraid of making mistake and many another factors that cause of speaking difficulties such as teaching strategy, the curriculum, and the environment. The research purpose is to know the factors of the students' speaking difficulty. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The number of population as many as 157 students of eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Tembilahan that consist of 6 classes. In taking the sample, the researcher uses a simple random sampling technique. The number of samples is 40 students or 25% of the population. The researcher uses a questionnaire as an instrument as many as 15 items and also uses an interview technique. After analyzing the data by using the descriptive qualitative method, it is known that the four factors of speaking difficulty have a positive value or more than 50%. The values of these four factors were 62.5% for personal factors, 95% for teaching strategies factor, 90% for curriculum factor and 57.5% for the environmental factor. Therefore, it can be inferred that the dominant factor which causes students’ difficulties in speaking is teaching strategies.

The problem in this research was fewer students’ motivation in learning English. This research aimed to increase students’ motivation in learning English by using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants in this research were twenty-five students, twelve men and thirteen women in the sixth-grade of MI Sa'adah El-Islamiayah Tembilahan. The data were collected in each cycle from observation, questionnaire, and field notes. The findings of this research showed that the study by using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method has increased the students’ motivation in learning English in the sixth-grade of MI Sa'adah El-Islamiyah Tembilahan after two cycles have done. It can be seen from the result of the questionnaire, observation, and field note. In the first cycle, it was seen that there was a slight increase to the students’ motivation in learning English while in the second cycle; the students' motivation was more increased than the first cycle. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method was able to increase the students’ motivation in learning English. As a recommendation, the method can be utilized to grade up the students’ better-learning motivation.

Writing is one of the language skills, which is taught to secondary school students. In reality, it is still found that students have difficulties in writing. It is needed to investigate why it happened. Thus, the purpose of this research is to determine the students' factor difficulties in writing a narrative text. Moreover, it was designed as descriptive research which took sixty students of the eighth grade of MTs Sabilal Muhtadin Tembilahan as the samples. In collecting the data, the researchers used questionnaires and interviews. Then the data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis and qualitative analysis. The research findings show that there are two main factors; students' factors and teachers' factors. After analyzing the data, the results revealed that the students' factor gained a percentage of 62.43% which was placed at a strong level. Also, the teachers' factor obtained a percentage of 72.95% which was classified as a strong level. The highest students’ factor indicator was the statement “English is very different from Bahasa Indonesia." It was proven by the score 75.3% which was categorized as a strong level. Then the teachers’ factor found that the highest indicator was the statement “Using up to date method and technique." It was classified as a strong level. In conclusion, the factors of students' difficulties in writing narrative text cause both students' and teachers' factors.

The purpose of this research is to know students’ writing skill of discussion text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. To reach the purpose above, the researcher was distributing test to twelfth Grade students of XII Agama 1 of MAN 1 Indragiri Hilir. The amount of them is 20 students. After collecting the data, the researcher found that their writing skill of discussion text was good. It was proven by their mean score that is 74.1. It can be concluded that students have had good skills to write discussion text. The researcher assumed that this good result can be because the students had been able to understand what the teacher explain during the teaching and learning process and they also read many texts in the library or the internet.

The purpose of this research is to know the students' ability in using question tags in the modal auxiliary format eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan. Based on the limitation of the problem, the researcher limits the problem in using question tag in modal auxiliary form just focuses on the use modal of can, could, will, would, and should. The researcher conducted a short observation to know the number of classes at the eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan. The number of eleventh-grade students just consists of one class, namely Class A. The total of the eleventh-grade students is 20 students. The population of this research was all of the eleventh-grade students because the sample of population less than 100 the researcher used total sampling technique. The researcher used a quantitative method to get the data needed. The research instrument in this research is testing and collected by individual test scores of students where they are asked to identify and using question tags according to the instruction given with the total correct (25). So that, each correct question tag in the modal auxiliary form will be scored by 4. Based on the result of the test, the mean score of the question tag in the modal auxiliary form was 82.6. It was categorized very high level, which included in the interval 81-100. Where 14 students get in a very good score, 5 students get in a good score, 1 student gets in a moderate score and there is no get in a low and very low score. Based on that explanation above, we can conclude that the students' ability in using question tag in modal auxiliary format eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan includes in the realm of the category nice and understanding to use question tag in modal auxiliary form.

Reading is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by language learners. Through reading, they enable us to gain the information needed. Moreover, the purpose of this study is to investigate how the students' ability in using pictures on reading descriptive texts. The research design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. The population in this research was 10th grade of MA Sabilal Muhtadin Tembilahan, the population was group or cluster as classes. The sampling technique was a purposive sample. The students’ mean score was 63, it can be seen 6 students in interval 81-100 with category is very good, or with presentation (15%), 16 students in interval 61-80  with category is good, or with presentation (41%), 13 students in interval 41-60 with category is enough, or with presentation (33%), and 4 students in interval 21-40  with category is poor, or with presentation (10%)and 0 students in interval 00-40  with category is Very poor, or with presentation (0%). In conclusion, the overall students' ability in using the picture was good.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery as the independent variable and speaking ability as the dependent variable. The sample of this study were 38 students of eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Gaung Anak Serka. The research method used in this study was a correlation study. The researcher gave tests of vocabulary and speaking ability to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of students' vocabulary mastery is 42.7, it was in the very low category, and the average of students' speaking ability was 36.5, also in the very low category, it was in the range 00 – 49. Based on those findings, the researcher analyzed the relationship between the students' vocabulary mastery and speaking ability using the Pearson Product Moment formula, the results was 0.339 it was classified as low correlation. Then to test the hypothesis, the researcher compared the values of rxy = 0.339 and rtable = 0.2709 (5%) and 0.3202 (1%). In short, 0.2709 < 0.3393 > 0.3202. Meanwhile, the SPSS result has also proven that the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.037, which was less than 0.05. Dealing with the results, it could be determined that Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected, and H1 (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there is a positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. If students have good vocabulary so that they will have a good speaking ability.
